Creative military discipline demands at least four practices in order to achieve the decisive point in war. These military practices, also demanded by other creative arts ranging from poetry to management, may be summarized by the following imperatives and examples from the career of George C. Marshall: 1. Nobel Peace Prize
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five Nobel Prizes bequested by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel . Four of the five prizes are awarded in Stockholm each year, but Nobel had stipulated in his will that the Peace Prize could not be awarded in Sweden. Instead the Norwegian capital of Oslo was chosen as the award site and a Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee is appointed to select the laureate for the Peace Prize. According to the will of Alfred Nobel the prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".

Marshall, one of the great American statesmen of this century, played a crucial role in international affairs from 1939 to 1951 the years that shaped the second half of the twentieth century. Until 1945, he served in the United States Army. As Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army from 1939 to 1945 he was, in the words of Winston Churchill, the "true Architect of Victory" in the West European arena of World War II. In a succession of positions of great responsibility between 1945 and 1951, Marshall devoted his efforts to the cause of international peace. He spent a year in China from 1945 - 46 as President Truman's representative, attempting without success to bring about a resolution to the conflict between the nationalists and the communists. As Secretary of State from 1947 to 1949, he had the vision to make the Marshall Plan the vehicle for the economic reconstruction of Europe.

    General George C. Marshall (1880-1959)
As V-E Day drew to a close, Secretary of War Henry Stimson gathered a group of top generals and officials in his office and sent for Army Chief of Staff George Marshall. "I have never seen a task of such magnitude performed by a man," Stimson said to Marshall in front of everyone. "I have seen a great many soldiers in my lifetime and you, Sir, are the finest soldier I have ever known."
Such flattery usually sounds insincere or ridiculous, but not when applied to George Catlett Marshall. The only man to ever serve as both secretary of state and secretary of defense, his greatest achievement may have been devising the Marshall Plan, which rebuilt a devastated Europe after World War II. Born in the same year as Douglas MacArthur, he is perhaps the only other military man to play major roles in both World Wars as well as the early years of the Cold War. But Marshall was as reserved as MacArthur was flamboyant, as self-effacing as MacArthur was egotistical. The two men offer a fascinating study in contrasts.
The inter-war years were alternately fulfilling and frustrating for Marshall. He enjoyed his time at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he helped lay the foundation for the army he would lead in the next war. In the words of historian Eric Larrabee, "Benning became Mother Church, spinning off disciples and replicate institutions that could carry the Word, center of a True Faith that radiated outward in concentric circles like the ripples on a pond, until they reached every corner of it." The low-point came in the early 1930s, courtesy of Chief of Staff MacArthur, who assigned him to run the Illinois National Guard. But even there the experience he gained in working with civilians would later serve him well.

The Life of George C. Marshall
Born in 1880 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and a graduate of Virginia Military Institute in 1901, George Catlett Marshall served the United States as Chief of Staff of the Army (1939-1945), Secretary of State (1947-1949) and Secretary of Defense during the Korean War(1950-1951). His career as a military officer spanned 44 years, including distinguished service in two world wars, during which he gained a reputation of efficiency, integrity, and results. Marshall became a five star general in 1944. In 1947, Marshall outlined a program of economic assistance to war-torn Europe that today is known as the Marshall Plan . From 1949 to 1950, General Marshall served as President of the American Red Cross. In 1953, he headed the United States delegation to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. Later that same year. George C. Marshall became the first professional soldier to be awarded the

General George Catlett Marshall General George Marshall of Uniontown PA This American soldier-statesman was born on December 31, 1880, into a family of Virginia and Kentucky lineage in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, where his father manufactured coking coal for the iron and steel industry. He was reared in Uniontown, his boyhood home being located on West Main Street where the West End Theater later was built in 1903 and the VFW Home is now located. The Uniontown Marshalls were distantly related to John Marshall, former chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. He had an older brother, Stuart (1875-1956), and a sister, Marie (1876-1962). Young Marshall was not a particularly good student in school, but he was particularly interested in history, and he developed the ability to interpret American society and specific problems he faced in a broad historical context. In later years, when asked to which political party he belonged, Marshall generally responded: My mother was a Republican; my father was a Democrat; and I'm an Episcopalian. Marshall attended the Virginia Military Institute, graduating in 1901 as the highest-ranking cadet. He entered the U.S. Army in February 1902. For the next fifteen years, he served in various of the posts in the U.S. and the Philippines. Between 1906 and 1910, he attended army schools at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and also taught there. He was a member of the small group of U.S. Army officers trained in modern warfare prior to World War I.
