ENHANCEMENT OF IMMUMITY THE BASIC DISCOVERY Our discussion of how the body becomes immune to disease begins with recognition of the work of the great Russian cellular biologist, Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov. Mechnikov was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1908 for his “Work on Immunity”. His lecture at the Nobel Prize award ceremony is an excellent summary of his work. Mechnikov was not only a great scientist; he was a man with an acute vision of the future. His investigations were characterized by advance from one observed scientific fact in animal studies to the next observed scientific fact. He avoided the error of many investigators to drift off into a never-ending quest of “why”, and remained focused on “what”, true scientific facts. Mechnikov concluded, “The total phenomena observed in immunity thus reduces to a series of biological acts, for example the sensitivity of phagocytes, their active movements directed to areas imperiled by the microbes, and a series of chemical and physical acts which bring about the destruction and the digestion of the infectious agents.” Mechnikov discovered that the phagocyte, macrophage, was the key to the immune response and foresaw its ability to release a cascade of interdependent actions to make the host immune to infection and toxins. It was a truly breakthrough discovery and opened a completely new concept of immunity, and lead to the quest for more information and hopefully, methods of fighting infection and ensuring resistance and recovery of the organism.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
"Physiology or Medicine is one of the five prize areas mentioned in Alfred Nobel's will. The will was, however, partly incomplete. Nobel simply stated that prizes be given to those who, during the preceding year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine." robiotics is one of the most important discoveries to be made in the field of nutrition. Although given a great deal of attention of late, its role as a critical component of good health has been established and well known for well over 100 years. In its simplest terms, probiotics refers to live microbial supplements, usually bacteria, which are beneficial to the host user by displacing or destroying competing pathogenic micro-organisms in the intestinal track, as well as assisting the body in ridding itself of other organic debris.
Given the extensive knowledge and history behind probiotics , it is amazing more health-conscious consumers and health care professionals don't pay attention to this area. The concept was most widely developed in the West with the work of Dr. John Harvey Kellogg (1852-1943). Though his eccentricities in other areas of been widely publicized, there can be little doubt that Dr. Kellogg was one of the most prescience physicians of the early 20th century: he promoted the concepts of roughage and high fiber diets, the importance of regularity, the value of vegetarianism (or a diet not so dependent on animal proteins) - as well as the critical contribution a healthy intestinal flora, all many years before peer-reviewed scientific study and the winds of convention would support these views. His practice of introducing live yogurt culture to the lower bowel rectally following colonic irrigation, though unusual in a clinical setting, could not be found to be without merit given our current understanding of intestinal flora balance.

Ignore the need for that research and we shall lose the cures that we are entitled to expect in the next 50 years for illnesses that afflict hundreds of millions of people such as cancer, heart disease, viral diseases, malaria, schistosomiasis and sickle cell anaemia." - Sir John Vane, Nobel Prizewinner 1982
