    Alumni Info
Since Pasadena City College (PCC) is a two-year institution, we do not have the usual "alumni" who had obtained degrees from PCC. In fact, while many of our former students had taken a full complement of courses and transferred to excellent schools after attending PCC, many did not necessarily apply for and obtain an A.A. or an A.S. degree. We are using the word "alumni" loosely to refer to those who took the Chemistry 1AB series or who finished the Organic Chemistry series (Chemistry 8AB) at PCC. We also include news from students who worked as student assistants in the Chemistry Department. The information given is current as of the date given at the end of each paragraph. News (and pictures, especially digital ones!!) will be gladly accepted by the editor ! Also, please report any corrections to currently posted information. We have heard from the former students below. Before the 1990's
    • David Lawson has been a successful dentist in the Pasadena area for a number of years. He was invited to give a talk at the Division's 1997 Physical Science Awards ceremony during which he emphasized the importance of being tenacious.(6/99) Marco Lopez is currently Professor of Chemistry at California State University, Long Beach. In his talk at our 1996 Physical Science Awards ceremony, he credited his success "all the way back" to his training here at PCC. (3/98)

    1 Introduction
ChemInform has been a highly respected weekly compendium for a quarter of a century. It features selected abstracts from approx. 230 primary journals focusing on the information needs of the synthetic organic and organometallic chemist. A typical ChemInform entry consists of a carefully prepared abstract and a comprehensive formula scheme that describes the entire chemistry reported in the paper using the language every chemist understands best. About 10,000 of the ca. 18,000 papers reported in ChemInform every year contain explicit reaction information. This makes ChemInform one of the richest sources for current reactions with a growth of approx. 60,000 reactions per year. Since 1990, the reaction databases ChemInformRX (CIRX) and Current Synthetic Methodology (CSM) are produced from the data collected for ChemInform.

By Karen Young Kreeger Peptide-Synthesis Services Peptides-linear chains of amino acids-are the building blocks of nature. Understanding their action figures prominently in recent advances in many fields, particularly immunology. Such insight, for example, allows investigators to elucidate the details of antigen-antibody interactions of the human immune system.
VERSATILE: Services at Richmond, VA.-based Commonwealth Biotechnologies include peptide and DNA synthesis. Because scientists aren't able to extract sufficient quantities of peptides from natural sources for their experiments, a growing number of companies are custom-manufacturing peptides for research. Synthetic peptides are used for a variety of molecular biological applications, including monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies for immunological research, peptidomemetics, and the testing of prospective drugs in clinical trials. Researchers generally target a specific amino acid sequence of the protein they're working on and order that sequence in quantities ranging from a few milligrams to many grams, depending on the project. "We have customers throughout the research community," notes Mark Peterson, manager of commercial operations at Advanced ChemTech Inc., a Louisville, Ky.-based company that performs custom synthesis in addition to manufacturing and selling synthesizers. "In industry, our clientele ranges from small biotechs who may not have the capabilities to do synthesis themselves to large companies who may need the service to bolster their own capacity. We also have clients in government and academia."
