Gabriela Mistral(1922): Poems Gabriela Mistral, a Nobel laureate, is one of Chile's most distinguished writers. After an early love affair, tragically ended by the untimely death of her lover, she lived a life of self-described desolation, yearning for, but never experiencing motherhood. Gabriela Mistral Florence and Guatemala and was an honorary member of various cultural societies in Chile as well as in the United States, Spain, and Cuba. She taught Spanish literature in the United States at Columbia University Middlebury College Vassar College , and at the University of Puerto Rico The love poems in memory of the dead, Sonetos de la muerte (1914), made her known throughout Latin America, but her first great collection of poems, [Despair], was not published until 1922. In 1924 appeared Ternura [Tenderness], a volume of poetry dominated by the theme of childhood; the same theme, linked with that of maternity, plays a significant role in Tala , poems published in 1938. The Nobel Prize in Literature 1945 Presentation Speech by Hjalmar Gullberg, Member of the Swedish Academy One day a mother's tears caused a whole language, disdained at that time in good society, to rediscover its nobility and gain glory through the power of its poetry. It is said that when , the first of the two poets bearing the name of the Mediterranean wind, had written his first verses in French as a young student, his mother began to shed inexhaustible tears. An ignorant country woman from Languedoc, she did not understand this distinguished language. Mistral then wrote , recounting the love of the pretty little peasant for the poor artisan, an epic that exudes the perfume of the flowering land and ends in cruel death. Thus the old language of the troubadours became again the language of poetry. The Nobel Prize of 1904 drew the world's attention to this event. Ten years later the poet of died.

Search Gabriela Mistral Gabriela Mistral was the first Latin American woman to win a Nobel Prize in Literature. She was born in Vicuña in northern Chile in 1889. Her parents were Petronila Alcayaga, a school teacher of Basque descent and Jeronimo Godoy Alcayaga Villanueva, a vagabond poet and school teacher of Indian and Jewish ancestry. Mistral's birth name was Lucila Godoy Alcayaga. Lucila and her older sister Emelina were raised in Montegrande by their mother after the father deserted them when Lucila was three years old. At the age of nine, Lucila started attending school, but did so for only three years. At school she discovered her love of poetry and started writing her own poems. She also assumed the name Gabriela Mistral. She continued her education at home with the help of her sister who was a teacher and who encouraged Gabriela to become a teacher as well. At age sixteen she moved to La Cantera to take a job and fell in love with a young railway worker. The relationhip didn't last and two years later the young man committed suicide. The only item found in his posession was a postcard from Mistral. This affected her deeply and she wrote Sonetas de la Muerte (Sonnets of Death) to express her feelings.

Nobel Prize for Literature Of Spanish, Basque, and Indian descent, Mistral grew up in a village of northern Chile and became a schoolteacher at 15, advancing later to the rank of college professor. Throughout her life she combined writing with a career as an educator, cultural minister, and diplomat; her diplomatic assignments included posts in Madrid, Lisbon, Genoa, and Nice. Her reputation as a poet was established in 1914 when she won a Chilean prize for three "Sonetos de la muerte" ("Sonnets of Death"). They were signed with the name by which she has since been known, which she coined from those of two of her favourite poets, Gabriele D'Annunzio and . A collection of her early works, (1922; "Desolation"), includes the poem "Dolor," detailing the aftermath of a love affair that was ended by the suicide of her lover. Premio Nobel de Literatura 1945 Gabriela Mistral: una mujer nobel Lucila Godoy Alcayaga En 1904 comienza a escribir en el diario "Coquimbo" con los seudónimos de "Soledad", "Alguien" y "Alma". Años después en, 1917, escribiría para los periódicos "La Voz del Elqui" y "La Reforma". Carlos Soto Araya publica en 1908 "Literatura Coquimbana", antología en la cual el autor le dedica a Mistral un breve estudio, seleccionando tres prosas poéticas de ella: "Ensoñación", "Junto al mar" y "Carta íntima". En 1912 decidió presentar "Sonetos de la Muerte", en los Juegos Florales de Santiago, inspirados en la tragedia sentimental de su frustrado amor por Romelio Ureta, empleado de ferrocarriles, quien se suicidó tres años antes. Los tres sonetos en concurso llevaban por primera el nombre que la hizo conocida en el mundo entero, "Gabriela Mistral". Gabriela Mistral ya era conocida en el ámbito literario, sus poesías no dejaban a nadie indiferente, sin embargo, aún no publicaba ningún libro independiente. Por el año 1917 aparecen 55 poemas de su factura en los cinco volúmenes que formaban los "Libros de Lectura" de Manuel Guzmán Maturana.
