June 27 Enduring Navaho "Let me be m o r e maternal than a mother; a b l e to love and defend with all of a mother's f e r v o r the child that is not flesh of m y flesh." ~ Gabriela Mistral A rural schoolteacher who loved... and wrote... with fervor, poet Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957) was born Lucila Godoy Alcayaga in the remote village of Montegrande in northern Chile and changed her name to honor her favorite poets Gabriele D'Annunzio and Frédéric Mistral. "What the soul is to the body, so is the artist to his people," she said and wrote profoundly of love , grief, courage , and hope . Her sparse style was almost Biblical in sound. She loved folk verse and children's rhymes. To improve Mexico and Chile's education system, Mistral initiated programs for the poor and created a mobile library system. Named "Teacher of the Nation" in 1923, she became an international envoy for the League of Nations and United Nations. Beauty ... is the shadow of God on the universe," she wrote and was the first Latin American woman to win a Nobel Prize in Literature (1945), accepting the award as the direct voice of "the poets of my race and the indirect voice for the noble Spanish and Portuguese tongues."

Rivestì, infatti, l'incarico di educatrice, ministro culturale e diplomatico in vari paesi europei.

After the tragic suicide of an early lover, she began to write poetry as a village schoolteacher, living a life she herself described as desolate. She , yearned for, but never experienced motherhood. She "turned her personal tragedy into beautiful poetry which offers intellectual and spiritual love, compassion, and courageous nurturance to others, especially children or others in need of protection" (Paul Brians). Gabriela Mistral
