ERNESTO TEODORO MONETA
Ernesto Teodoro Moneta
Born of aristocratic Milanese parents, he spent his childhood in two country houses where his impoverished family could still live on a patriarchal scale, although without luxury. He was profoundly affected by his experiences in the uprising against Austria when, at the age of fifteen, he fought next to his father to defend his family home and saw three Austrian soldiers die nearby. It was probably then that Moneta's dual advocacy of peace and yet of fighting for his own kind of nationalism was born. From 1848 to 1866 he spent a great deal of his time in efforts for Italian independence and unification, fighting with Garibaldi in 1859 and 1860 and later under General Sirtori whose aide-de-camp he became. Disillusioned by the campaign of 1866, however, he cut short what seemed to be a promising army career and returned to civilian life, although he remained personally loyal to General Sirtori all his life.
Moneta was a handsome, warm, cheerful man who enjoyed riding horses, acting in amateur theatricals, and contributing play reviews to Il Secolo , daily newspaper founded in 1866 by Edoardo Sonzogno. When two of his friends took over

The Moneta-Caglio and the Facco. Both families have a long way in the Italian history. E. T. Moneta, father of the “5 Giornate di Milano”, in 1907 his intense pacifist activity was recognized on an international level when he was awarded the 1 st Peace Nobel Prize. At a young age, Ernesto Teodoro Moneta took part of the “Unita’ D’Italia” along with his brother and father, an ardent patriot. Ernesto Teodoro Moneta could see beyond our boundaries and he was able to define a peaceful world.
Theodore Roosevelt honored E.T. Moneta with respect and congratulations writing him a telegram in September 12, 1906. After E. T. Moneta, his nephew Attilio Moneta-Caglio Colonel of the Italian Royal Cavalry and very well known Italian notary signed a forrow in the Italian history again. Enrico, Ernesto, Gianni and AnnaMaria Moneta-Caglio were honoring the Moneta Caglio’s name during the last 50 years of Italian history. Ranch we are all proud to be part of these families. Anna and Angelo are developing various educational programs at the Ranch. Anna will be offering real Italian homemade cooking classes, from different pastas recipes to the famous Tiramisu. Adriano and Norma Facco, Chefs of Cousine affiliated with the Italian Culinary Association and Consultants for the “Agrisport and Agriturismo” Magazines as well as “La Cucina Italiana” are periodically attending and consulting the different cuisine lessons made by Chef Anna.

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.
