Nobel Laureate Richter to step down as director of SLAC
Burton Richter, Nobel Prize laureate and a pioneer of the colliders that now dominate high-energy physics, announced today that he will step down Aug. 31, 1999, as director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center after 15 years in the position. Richter, 67, is the Paul Pigott Professor in the Physical Sciences and will remain on the Stanford faculty, conducting research and working on science policy. He also will take office as president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. "All the world knows Burt Richter's qualities as a physicist because they were recognized by the Nobel Prize," said Stanford President Gerhard Casper. "Stanford and I know his qualities as an extraordinarily able, dedicated, and tenacious director of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and as a citizen of the university. He has always performed with good judgment, integrity and candor. My almost seven years of working with Burt have been thoroughly rewarding."

Successful entrepreneurs talk about how it's done BY KATHLEEN O'TOOLE When John Shoch of Palo Alto visited an old friend in Beverly Hills, he discovered they had more in common than Northern and Southern Californians care to admit. His friend took him to breakfast at Il Fornaio; Shoch, a venture capitalist with three Stanford degrees, often starts his day at the chain's Palo Alto restaurant. His friend, in the TV and movie business, proceeded to make an "infrastructure scan" of the tables, taking mental notes of who was eating with whom among the lawyers, writers and agents gathered there. Amazed at the similarity of the two scenes, Shoch concluded: "This must be a general characteristic of industries." In the telecommunications age where the world is at your fingertips, how is it that a restaurant or geography at all still matters? Nobel economist Kenneth Arrow asked that question at a recent Stanford conference on "the changing nature of entrepreneurship," which drew some of the Silicon Valley's most respected venture capitalists, technologists and scholars. Hosted by Stanford's Center for Economic Policy Research, the conference was part of a new research effort directed by Stanford economists Paul Romer and Timothy Bresnahan to look at the relationship between national economic growth and the economic well-being of individuals and families.

STANFORD UNIV. TO CREATE NEW STEM CELL LINES Stanford University announced on Tuesday that its researchers will work to create new stem cell lines by employing nuclear transfer technology a process that can be interpreted as cloning.
    Online NewsHour Special Report:
    Stem Cell Research
The research will be conducted at the new Institute for Cancer/Stem Cell Biology and Medicine, which Stanford is founding with $12 million from an anonymous donor. The Institute will also work to develop a new series of embryonic stem cell lines to serve as models for diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and Parkinson's disease. Embryonic stem cells are created in the first days of pregnancy and develop into all the cells in the human body. "We want to translate the advances in embryonic stem cell research to create lines that represent genetically determined diseases and make these lines available to investigators who want to understand and treat these diseases," Irving Weissman, the Institute's director, said in a statement. This method of creating stem cells is known as nuclear transfer or therapeutic cloning. It begins in the same way as reproductive cloning, according to Malcolm Moore of the Sloan-Kettering Institute, a scientific advisor to Advanced Cell Technology, a company that is involved in the research and development of nuclear transfer technology.
