Anderson, Philip W.,
in full PHILIP WARREN ANDERSON (b. Dec. 13, 1923, Indianapolis, Ind., U.S.), physicist who won a Nobel Prize for his part in the development of advanced electronic circuitry. Educated at Harvard University, Anderson received his doctorate in 1949. From 1949 to 1984 he worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J. From 1967 to 1975 he was professor of theoretical physics at the University of Cambridge, and from 1975 he taught at Princeton University. For his research in solid-state physics, which made possible the development of inexpensive electronic switching and memory devices in computers, he was awarded jointly with John H. Van Vleck and Sir Nevill F. Mott the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physics . In 1982 he was awarded the National Medal of Science. His writings include Concepts of Solids (1963) and Basic Notions of Condensed Matter Physics (1984). Anderson was a certified first degree-master of the Japanese board game Go.

Who is Rafi Blumenfeld?
I am a bloke who went into the adventure of theoretical physics with eyes not too open, when it seemed to me that life could inflict nothing beyond my resilience. In spite of the current chaotic (some would say desparate) state of affair in scientific research I still believe that research is one of the greatest adventures around. When cornered by a Tel Aviv University local media person with the demand to characterize myself in one sentence I quoted a famous American philosopher, Doctor J. (also an NBA basketball player at the time), "I am a student of life". Life retorted by repeatedly teasing and testing. Academic institutes in Israel followed life and after random-walking through Cambridge (UK), Princeton (NJ, US), and Los Alamos NM Warwick doing some new exciting stuff while the other remained planted in the Cavendish doing the old exciting stuff. I am happily researching and consulting and would probably keep doing this even without being paid (which already has happened in the past and which prompted some colleagues to point me out as the ultimate physics addict). I am nibbling at the unknown on several fronts, all of which relating in one way or another to soft condensed matter physics, nonlinear phenomena and materials science. Feel free to browse through the research problems that have captured my interest in the last few years, but take notice that some of those have been dormant for lack of time (and students). If any item on this list gets you really excited, excruciatingly disappointed or leaves you in the dark you are hereby encouraged to contact me and let me have a piece of your mind or get together to discuss it.
