Extracurricular interests: Volleyball, Chess, Backgammon, Tennis, Swimming, Bridge
Details:
  • 1976-81 Chess player for "Hapoel Ramat-Gan" club, division 3, Israel. Ranking 1900.
  • 1978-89 Semi-professional Volleyball player in several premier and 1st division clubs, Israel (sampling altogether four clubs was a salary-induced process).
  • 1989-92 Head coach of the Men's Volleyball Varsity team of Cambridge University, England.
  • 1989-92 Volleyball player for the Cambridge National League's 3rd division Men's team (The team never really bothered to try to make it to a higher division, in fact we declined when we managed in 91).
  • 1990-91 Head coach of both the Men's and Women's Volleyball Varsity teams of Cambridge University.
  • 1997-2000 Volleyball player for the Cambridge NVL Men's team.
  • 2001-2002 Volleyball player for the Cambridge EVL Men's team.
Anecdotes / Achievements / Name-dropping
  • Danny Kaye
When I was 3 Danny Kaye visited Israel and my parents took me to the airport to see this idol of theirs getting off the plane. My mom tells that I stood at DK's feet vigorously pulling at his trousers and yelling (in Hebrew, of course) "I want to see Danny Kaye, I want to see Danny Kaye". The folklore then goes that he picked me up in his arms and gave me a big hug and a kiss. Since my parents did not possess a camera at the time and DK has already pegged out (namely, he is smelling the roses from underneath) so it is not too easy to confirm this story.
  • High jump
At the ages of 16 and 17 I captured, for two years in a row, the Givataim regional championship in high jump. I later went on to set an all-time new record for a variation of the high jump competition at the pilot cadet course in the Israeli Defence Force (which never helped me in the flying business; I dropped from the course after excruciating 14 months).

The Economy as an Evolving Complex System
Back-of-Book Information
This book is the outcome of a meeting of the Santa Fe Institute where economists and physical and biological scientists came together to discuss a conceptual framework incorporating a more appropriate mathematics, with a greatly strengthened capacity to deal simultaneously with many variables, nonlinearity, and dynamics. Specific techniques for nonlinear dynamics and the study of adaptive paths with the aim of encouraging the use of such techniques to understand the complex and chaotic developments in the worldwide economy were discussed. The theoretical developments were oriented by empirical generalization about the economy and by detailed analysis of specific data using new methods for coping with nonlinear dynamics. These are the proceedings of the Evolution Paths of the Global Economy Workshop, held September 8-18, 1987 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The Heidelberg Appeal
The Heidelberg Appeal was publicly released at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. By the end of the 1992 summit, 425 scientists and other intellectual leaders had signed the appeal. Since then, word of mouth has prompted thousands more scientists to lend their support. Today, more than 4,000 signatories, from over 100 countries have signed it, including more than 70 Nobel Prize winners. In spite of this spontaneous and growing support from the world's scientific community, the Heidelberg Appeal has received very little media attention. Neither a statement of corporate interests nor a denial of environmental problems, the Heidelberg Appeal is a quiet call for reason and a recognition of scientific progress as the solution to, not the cause of, the health and environmental problems that we face. The appeal expresses a conviction that modern society is the best equipped in human history to solve the world's ills, provided that they do not sacrifice science, intellectual honesty and common sense to political opportunism and irrational fears. We want to make our full contribution to the preservation of our common heritage, the Earth.
