Graduating from high school during the second world war, I was sent by the U.S. Navy to Purdue University for officers training (V12 program) and remained there to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in 1947. My graduate studies were at Harvard University and my PhD work on a problem in nuclar physics was directed by Professor Julian Schwinger and completed in 1950.
Receiving a Sheldon Traveling Fellowship from Harvard University I chose to spend the year (1950-51) at the Institute for Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen (later the Niels Bohr Institute) where so much of modern physics had been created and where there were such special traditions for international cooperation. A fellowship from the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission permitted me to continue my work in Copenhagen for two more years after which I held a research position in the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) theoretical study group that was formed in Copenhagen. Mottelson, Ben R.,
in full BEN ROY MOTTELSON (b. July 9, 1926, Chicago, Ill., U.S.), American-Danish physicist who shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for Physics with Aage N. Bohr and James Rainwater for his work in determining the asymmetrical shapes of certain atomic nuclei and the reasons behind such asymmetries. Having taken his doctorate in theoretical physics at Harvard University in 1950, Mottelson accepted a fellowship at the Niels Bohr Institute of Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen and then joined the faculty of the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Nuclear Physics there; he subsequently became a naturalized Danish citizen. From experiments conducted in collaboration with Bohr in the early 1950s, Mottelson discovered that the motion of subatomic particles can distort the shape of the nucleus, thus challenging the widely accepted theory that all nuclei are perfectly spherical. Subsequently it was discovered that such asymmetries occur in atoms of all elements.

Mottelson, Ben (Roy) US-born Danish physicist who with Aage Bohr and James Rainwater shared the 1975 Nobel Prize for Physics for their work on the structure of the atomic nucleus.
Mottelson was born in Chicago, Illinois, and educated at Purdue University. Based in Copenhagen from 1950, he was at the Institute of Theoretical Physics to 1953, then held a position at CERN (European Centre for Nuclear Research), and became professor at Nordita 1957.
In the early 1950s, Mottelson and Bohr together confirmed experimentally the theory worked out by Rainwater about the structure of the nucleus. Mottelson published several books and many scientific papers jointly with Bohr.
