  • Biographical Sketches BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES George Carlos Wheeler (1897-1991) went to Texas Christian University in 1914 with the intention of becoming a high school language teacher. His long time interest in biology, however, dominated his spare time and upon transferring to the Rice Institute in 1915, Wheeler began to enroll in biology classes. His first teacher and academic advisor was Julian Huxley who strongly influenced Wheeler to become a professional biologist. When Wheeler completed his undergraduate work at the Rice Institute in 1918, he enlisted in the army and was sent to the Yale Army Laboratory School. After Armistice, he carried out his military service at Base Hospital in Camp Dodge, Iowa. In 1919, he started his graduate work in entomology at Harvard's Bussey Institute. After he received his PhD, Wheeler went on to teach at Syracuse University, the University of North Dakota and the Desert Research Institute (University of Nevada). NO PEEKING AHEAD! * Do the following exercise, guaranteed to raise an eyebrow. * There's no trick or surprise. * Just follow these instructions, and answer the questions one at a time and as quickly as you can! * Again, as quickly as you can but don't advance until you've done each of them...really. * Now, scroll down (but not too fast, you might miss something). Think of a number from 1 to 10 Multiply that number by 9 If the number is a 2-digit number, add the digits together Now subtract 5 Determine which letter in the alphabet corresponds to the number you ended up with(example: 1=a, 2=b, 3=c, etc.) Think of a country that starts with that letter Remember the last letter of the name of that country Think of the name of an animal that starts with that letter Remember the last letter in the name of that animal Think of the name of a fruit that starts with that letter Are you thinking of a Kangaroo in Denmark eating an Orange?

Premio Nobel Medicina
1943 Henrik Carl Peter Dam (1895 - 1976) Denmark Polytechnic Institute. Copenhagen, Dinamarca
Edward Adelbert Doisy (1893 - 1986) EEUU, Saint Louis University , St. Louis, MO

1944 Joseph Erlanger (1874 - 1965) EEUU, Washington University, St. Louis, MO
Herbert Spencer Gasser (1888 - 1963) EEUU, Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, New York, NY

This isn't humour, but I didn't know where else to put it.
Today, at a time when fundamentalist Islamic extremism is affecting so much of our world, I think it's interesting to note the statistical difference between Arabs and Jews shown below. I think that if the fanatics spent less time on politics and religion, and more on 'useful endeavours' (lots of room for discussion here!), it would be a good thing for their people and for everyone. As it is, they have only managed to accomplish a lot of chanting and rocking about ARAB/ISLAMIC NOBEL WINNERS JEWISH NOBEL WINNERS 19.6% of World's Population

AN AMERICAN CENTURY OF BIOLOGY
Eric R. Kandel But the unifying principle underlying these three areas of inquiry was not to be discovered by the biologists of the Old World, but by the biologists of the new. Morgan's discovery that the gene was the unit of Mendel's inheritance, that it was the fuel for Darwin's evolution, and that it served as the control switch for development inaugurated an American Century in biology that accompanied the emergence of the American research university and with it the assumption of American leadership in all areas of science. Much as Thomas Hunt Morgan at Columbia was defining and localizing the gene and thereby founding the twentieth century science of genetics, American physicists were measuring the speed of light and the charge on the electron, and American engineers were putting an aircraft in the sky. The influence of Morgan's work at Columbia set the agenda for the decades to come, helping the American university system to establish, through its combination of teaching and research, the model for modern scientific work. Not only was Morgan the first native-born American to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology; the honor he received in 1933 for his pioneering discoveries at Columbia opened a floodgate. Over the next sixty years, some fifty Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine were awarded to Americans, including several who had worked directly with Morgan or with one of his students. The following profiles highlight the accomplishments of a core group of scientists responsible for carrying Morgan's legacy into the present.
