Myrdal, Alva Alva Myrdal was born in Uppsala in 1902, graduated from University in 1924, and married Gunnar Myrdal the same year. Together with her husband she made a major contribution in the 1930s to the work of promoting social welfare. They were joint authors of a book entitled "The population problem in crisis", and she was also actively engaged in the discussion on housing and school problems. She was a prominent member of the Social Democrat Party in Sweden, and in 1943 was appointed to that party's committee with the task of drafting a post-war programme. Also in that year she was appointed to the Government Commission on International Post-War Aid and Reconstruction.
After the second world war she devoted more and more of her time and energy to international questions. In 1949 - 1950 she headed UNO's section dealing with welfare policy, and in 1950 - 1955 she was chairman of UNESCO's social science section. In 1955 she was appointed Swedish ambassador to India, and in 1962 was nominated Sweden's representative to the Geneva disarmament conference. In that year she became a member of Parliament and in 1967 a member of the Cabinet, entrusted with the special task of promoting disarmament. For a number of years she has represented her country in UNO's political committee, in which questions of disarmament have been dealt with.

    HER MOTHER'S STORY
SISSELA BOK DRAWS A PERCEPTIVE PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN WHO ACTED
ON HER PASSIONS IN 'ALVA MYRDAL: A DAUGHTER'S MEMOIR'
Author: By Otile McManus, Globe Staff Date: Wednesday, May 29, 1991 Page: Section: LIVING In 1949, after 25 years of marriage to a brilliant but difficult and egocentric man, Alva Myrdal decided it was time to get on with her life. She was offered a job at the United Nations in New York by Secretary General Trygve Lie. The Swedish reformer, diplomat and feminist accepted, even though it meant leaving her two teen-age daughters and husband, Gunnar, in Geneva. Myrdal had turned down similar jobs in preceding years because she did not want to be separated from her family, but on Feb. 1, the day after her 47th birthday, she set out for New York. After years of struggling to balance work and family, after years of subsuming some of her interests to those of her husband, Alva Myrdal decided the time had come. She had already accomplished much, writing a highly charged book about the population crisis with her husband, supporting him through the writing of "An American Dilemma," his classic study of race in America, founding a college to upgrade the teaching of preschool teachers in Stockholm, pushing for more enlightened social and economic policies to benefit families in her country. And she would accomplish much more before her death in 1986, including serving as Sweden's ambassador to India and winning the Nobel Peace Prize for her disarmament efforts.

ALVA MYRDAL, NOBEL WINNER, DISARMAMENT ADVOCATE
Author: By William P. Coughlin, Globe Staff Date: Monday, February 3, 1986
    Page:
    Section:
OBITUARY STOCKHOLM Nobel Peace Prize winner Alva Myrdal, an advocate of world disarmament who criticized both superpowers for failing to end the arms race and who led the social development of modern Sweden, died Saturday in a suburban Stockholm hospital. She was 84. In recognition of her long effort to bring about disarmament, Mrs. Myrdal was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along with Mexican diplomat Alfonso Garcia Robles in 1982. The wife for 62 years of Gunnar Myrdal, who shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science in 1974, Mrs. Myrdal was bedridden for the last two years. The cause of death was not disclosed. However, when she was hospitalized in January 1984, it was reported she had a history of heart trouble. In an impassioned address in Oslo on Dec. 12, 1982 two months after winning the Nobel Prize Mrs. Myrdal attacked both the United States and the Soviet Union by name for "creating a cult of violence" threatening global war and breeding urban crime. "There is no doubt that what the superpowers are planning . . . is precisely the preparation for waging war," she said. . . "The age in which we live can be described as one of barbarism."

Residence: Sweden Gunnar Myrdal can best be defined as an economist, sociologist and politician. In regard to economics, he was first a mainstream theorist and then an Institutionalist. He was a senator in Sweden's Parliament in the years 1934-1936 and 1942-1946, and was minister for trade and commerce from 1945 to 1947. He later served as the executive secretary for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe for ten years (1947-1957). He won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1974, with Friedrich August von Hayek for their pioneering work in the theory of money and economic fluctuations and for their penetrating analysis of the interdependance of economic, social, and institutional phenomena. Myrdal and probably best known for his 1944 book, An American Dilemma , in which he literally tore apart the "separate but equal" doctrine implemented in the United States. In fact, it was largely this work which resulted in the Supreme Court ruling on Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka
