Refugee Problems and Their Solutions
On the tenth of December, fifty-nine years ago, Alfred Bernhard Nobel died in his villa at San Remo in Italy, sixty-three years old. The villa bore the name of "Mio Nido", and I do not know whether he himself thus christened his house. Perhaps he acquired it with name and-all. Anyway, there is a lot to that name, "Mio Nido", "My Nest". For Alfred Nobel - I use the words of Professor Henrik Schück - was "a lonely man and with his sensitive nature he suffered keenly from the misfortune of being without a home" Bertha van Suttner - Nobel Prize winner and world-famous through her Die Waffen nieder! - tried to interest him in her peace actions (for a short time, in fact for one week only, she had been secretary and housekeeper of the dynamite-maker Alfred Nobel, who was living in Paris), this was his reply: "My factories may make an end of war sooner than your congresses. The day when two army corps can annihilate each other in one second, all civilized nations, it is to be hoped, will recoil from war and discharge their troops." And in 1876 he added, again in conversation with Bertha von Suttner, "I want to invent a material or an engine of such horribly destructive effect that it will make wars impossible."

(UNHCR), organization established as the successor to the International Refugee Organization by the UN General Assembly on Jan. 1, 1951, to provide legal and political protection for refugees until they could acquire nationality in new countries of residence. With its main office in Geneva and branch offices situated in important countries of asylum, the UNHCR intervenes with the various national governments in order to ensure such minimal rights as freedom from arbitrary expulsion, access to the courts, the right to work and to educational opportunities, and possession of identity and travel documents. Financed primarily by voluntary governmental contributions, the UNHCR also provides social and economic aid. The UNHCR initially focused its efforts on aiding refugees and displaced persons in Europe after World War II. In later decades effort was shifted to resettling refugees who were the victims of war, political turmoil, or natural disasters in Africa and parts of Asia and Latin America. The UNHCR was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace twice, in 1954 and 1981.

"The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001, in two equal portions, to the United Nations (U.N.) and to its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world. For one hundred years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to strengthen organized cooperation between states. The end of the cold war has at last made it possible for the U.N. to perform more fully the part it was originally intended to play. Today the organization is at the forefront of efforts to achieve peace and security in the world, and of the international mobilization aimed at meeting the world's economic, social and environmental challenges.
Kofi Annan has devoted almost his entire working life to the U.N. As Secretary-General, he has been pre-eminent in bringing new life to the organization. While clearly underlining the U.N.'s traditional responsibility for peace and security, he has also emphasized its obligations with regard to human rights. He has risen to such new challenges as HIV/AIDS and international terrorism, and brought about more efficient utilization of the U.N.'s modest resources. In an organization that can hardly become more than its members permit, he has made clear that sovereignty can not be a shield behind which member states conceal their violations.

The United Nations ia an organization that was organized at the end of World War II. The member nations work together for world peace, the betterment of humanity and world security. Most of the countries of the world belong to the United Nations. Each nation send representatives to the headquarters in New York City where they discuss issues and try to solve problems. April 1945 Allied Nations of World War II sent representatives to San Francisco to draw up a plan of how to prevent such a disaster from occurring again. They established a plan which was described in the document called the Charter of the United Nations. June 1945 50 nations signed the Charter 24 October 1945 The United Nations was established. The first session of the General Assembly took place in London. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) was established to help provide food, clothing, and medical supplies for children.
