Norwegian explorer, scientist, statesman, author, and Nobel laureate. Nansen was a pioneer in the field of applied sciences ranging from zoology, marine biology and oceanography to sociology. He was proved to be exceptional in most fields. At the age of 26, he completed his doctoral thesis on the central nervous system. At an early stage, his search for knowledge compelled him to explore the unknown features of the Polar Regions. He explored Greenland in 1882 and again in 1888. His expeditions through the Arctic from 1893 to 1896 are among the greatest exploration adventures of all time, but they were also part of a pioneering effort in the science of oceanography. With his famous ship called “Fram” he attained 86°14' N, the most northerly point reached up to that time. From 1910 to 1914 he was engaged in various explorations in the North Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean, and Siberia. Through his growing stature as an explorer and scientist, Nansen became a leader among his contemporaries. In spite of his desire to continue his scientific explorations, he accepted King Haakon's appointment to become Norway's ambassador to London, thus starting his engagement in world affairs. In 1905 Nansen took part in the movement that led to the peaceful separation of Norway and Sweden and served (1906-1908) as the first Norwegian minister to Britain.

United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium

Oslo, 6 December 2001 It is an honour to address this symposium. This gathering of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates has an important role to play in defining a way forward for humanity. UNHCR has received the Nobel Peace Prize twice. First, in 1954, for its work in finding solutions for refugees who were still homeless in the aftermath of the Second World War; and then in 1981, for its role in managing the Vietnamese refugee crisis. In the more than five decades of UNHCR's existence, the refugee problem has not gone away. On the contrary, refugees remain a potent symbol of the world's failure to put an end to war and persecution. In its 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN General Assembly affirmed that all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. The Declaration proclaims that no one should be held in slavery or subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment. All are held to be entitled to equal protection of the law, to move about freely, to found a family, to own a property, to express their views, and to practice their chosen religion. All are held to be entitled to an adequate standard of living, employment, education, and health care. In the years since 1948, governments have adopted many instruments to attain these fundamental human rights. Despite this, gross violations of human rights continue to be perpetrated in numerous countries. War, genocide, persecution, political repression, “ethnic cleansing”, terrorism and abject poverty continue to deprive individuals of their homes, their families, their work, their schools, their places of worship, and their access to education and health care. Millions of people are deprived of their liberty, security and dignity.

UNHCR is mandated by the United Nations to lead and coordinate international action for the world-wide protection of refugees and the resolution of refugee problems. According to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees , a refugee is a person who "owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country." UNHCR's primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. The organization strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another state, and to return home voluntarily. By assisting refugees to return to their own country or to settle in another country, UNHCR also seeks lasting solutions to their plight. International refugee law provides an essential framework of principles for UNHCR's humanitarian activities. UNHCR's efforts are mandated by the organization's Statute and guided by the 1951 United Nations Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol . At present, 144 states, including

    • There are nearly 23 million refugees in the world, which equals the combined populations of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland.
    • Eighty per cent of refugees are women and children, and hundreds of thousands of them go to sleep hungry every night.
    • Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud and Rudolf Nureyev were all refugees who, along with many others, later became famous and left their individual mark on history.
It was a nightmare An anonymous Rwandan woman remembers her ordeal in central Africa. "How can I ever forget the scene where my husband was massacred right in my presence. It was a nightmare. It was a nightmare. I live through it every day and it is engraved forever in my memory". My sister disappeared Amra Radic is a young Bosnian girl who lives in the mountains of Switzerland. "When I was very young, I lived in a small Bosnian village. Bosnia was beautiful. Better than anywhere else. But the war broke out and I saw many people killed. Houses were set on fire. My father and sister, Elma, went to my grandfather's house but the soldiers came to the village and killed people. My mother tried to reach Elma but there was an explosion at the bridge and my mother couldn't reach her. We eventually came to Switzerland but we don't know where Elma, who is now nine years old, is". UNHCR assists more than twenty two million people who have fled war or persecution in Africa, Asia and in the heart of Europe where several million people were uprooted in the Balkans in the continent's biggest refugee crisis in 50 years.

    Nobel Peace Prize
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five Nobel Prizes bequested by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel . Four of the five prizes are awarded in Stockholm each year, but Nobel had stipulated in his will that the Peace Prize could not be awarded in Sweden. Instead the Norwegian capital of Oslo was chosen as the award site and a Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee is appointed to select the laureate for the Peace Prize. According to the will of Alfred Nobel the prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".
