Eni Contributes US$ 2.25 Million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to Help Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees in Azerbaijan
Eni, the Italian oil and natural gas company, will donate US$ 2.25 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to assist the Government of Azerbaijan to settle 400 families of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees in the regions of Agjabedi, Barda and Ganja in Azerbaijan. There are nearly 800,000 persons of concern to UNHCR in Azerbaijan, including more than 570,000 IDPs from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and over 220,000 refugees. About 11 percent of the country's population has fled their homes, often leaving nearly everything behind. Eni's assistance represents the largest single European corporate contribution to UNHCR in recent years. The initiative was officially launched today at Eni's Headquarters in Rome by Ms. Sadako Ogata, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Ali Hasanov, Vice Prime Minister of Azerbaijan in charge of the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs, and Mr. Vittorio Mincato, Chief Executive Officer of Eni. The objective of the 18-month project is to enhance the overall socio-economic sustainability and to promote greater independence from external assistance by:
  • constructing upgraded housing for each IDP/refugee household as well as community and educational facilities;

UN, Kofi Annan Win Nobel Peace Prize
The United Nations and its Secretary-General Kofi Annan were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday 12 October 2001 for ``their work for a better organized and more peaceful world.'' UN spokesman Fred Eckhard woke Annan and told him the news shortly after 5 am Friday morning. ``Since the end of the cold war, the UN has been able to move toward its full potential in the peace and security area,'' Eckhard said.
Nobel Peace Prize citation
``The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001, in two equal portions, to the United Nations and to its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, for their work for a better organised and more peaceful world. For one hundred years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to strengthen organised cooperation between states. The end of the Cold War has at last made it possible for the UN to perform more fully the part it was originally intended to play. Today the organisation is at the forefront of efforts to achieve peace and security in the world, and of the international mobilisation aimed at meeting the world's economic, social and environmental challenges. Kofi Annan has devoted almost his entire working life to the UN As Secretary-General, he has been preeminent in bringing new life to the organisation.

To Educate Girls Is To Reduce Poverty
To educate girls is to reduce poverty. That is the lesson that unites us today. We come to this lesson well-prepared. Study after study has taught us that there is no tool for development more effective than the education of girls. No other policy is as likely to raise economic productivity, lower infant and maternal mortality, improve nutrition and promote health including the prevention of HIV/AIDS. No other policy is as powerful in increasing the chances of education for the next generation. edited by Irwin Abrams (Antioch University, USA)
The last decade of the twentieth century is already proving to be as dramatic as any decade before. The chances of global peace seem stronger now than at any time since 1900 and the people and organizations that have contributed most towards this progress are recognized by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The Nobel Peace Prizewinners during the period 1971 – 1980 include men, women and organizations whose principles, dedication and diligence continue to shape history. These volumes are collections of the Nobel lectures delivered by the Prizewinners, together with their biographies, portraits and presentation speeches by representatives of the Norwegian Nobel Committee for the period 1971 – 1980. Each Nobel lecture is based on the work that won the laureate his prize. New biographical data of the laureates, since they were awarded the Nobel prize, are also included. These volumes of inspiring lectures by outstanding individuals should be on everyone's bookshelf. Below is a list of the prizewinners during the period 1981 – 1990: Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, A Myrdal, A García Robles, L Walesa, D M Tutu, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, E Wiesel, O Arias Sánchez, The United Nations Peace-Keeping Forces, The 14th Dalai Lama, M S Gorbachev.

    PRESS RELEASE
    16 November 2001 Background on United Nations and the Nobel Peace Prize awards The United Nations system has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on five previous occasions: in 1988 it was awarded to the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) received the prize in 1954 and 1981; it was awarded to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in 1965; and the International Labour Organization (ILO) received it in 1969. Kofi Annan is the second Secretary-General to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The Organization’s second Secretary-General, Dag Hammarskjöld, was awarded the prize posthumously in 1961, for his action in strengthening the United Nations.
    Hammarskjöld’s award came just a few months after his death in a plane crash near Ndola (now in Zambia), while on a peace mission in the Congo.
    On a number of other occasions, the Nobel Peace Prize Other has been awarded to individuals for their work directly related to the United Nations:

    Since its creation in 1951, UNHCR has helped a total of 30 million refugees, earning two Nobel Peace Prizes in the process. The refugee problem has doubled over the past decade (from 8 million in the 1970's to over 19 million in 1994). Since 1992, an average of 5,000 people a day have been fleeing their homes because of war, human rights abuses and environmental damage caused by war. Furthermore, an estimated 25 million have been displaced within their own countries. One in every 130 people out of a global population of 5.5 billion, has been forced into flight.
    Apart from providing assistance to refugees in countries of asylum and coping with major refugee emergencies, one of UNHCR's main responsibilities is to provide durable, long-term solutions for the plight of refugees. These are: voluntary repatriation, integration in the first country of asylum or resettlement in a third country.

    Human Rights: the new consensus contains a wide range of contemporary material on human rights, democracy, development and peace with 64 articles by leading figures including Philip Alston, UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights; Charlotte Bunch, Center for Womens' Global Leadership; Thomas Hammarberg, UN Committee on the Rights of the Child; Schulamith Koenig, Organizing Committee of the People's Decade of Human Rights Education; and Neelan Tiruchelvam, International Centre for Ethnic Studies and Law and Society Trust, and organizations such as International Alert, The Global Campaign for Women's Human Rights and the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights.
