Eugene O'Neill
Eugene O'Neill E ugene Gladstone O'Neill was born in New York City on October 16, 1888. The son of itinerant actor James O'Neill and Ellen Quinlan O'Neill, young Eugene led a rootless life, following his father's acting career around the country. The family's summer house in New London, Connecticut, Monte Cristo Cottage , was to be the only real home young O'Neill would know. O'Neill used New London as the setting of some of his most profound works, including Ah, Wilderness! , a comedy loosely based on his boyhood there. In Ah, Wilderness! , however, the characters are portrayed sympathetically. The father, for example, is not based upon James O'Neill, but on Fred Latimer, editor of the New London Telegraph , for whom O'Neill worked in 1912. It is Long Day's Journey Into Night which lays bare the reality of the family's condition. Set in the summer home in 1912, the play takes place in a single day. The Tyrones are clearly recognizable: James, the father, consumed by regret; Jamie, the elder son, by self-hatred; Mary, the mother, by her addiction to morphine. So intense and disturbing is this portrait that O'Neill refused to allow its performance during his lifetime. Brought to the stage in 1957, it won both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award that year. O'Neill's personal life was marked by disappointment and tragedy. His mother, depressed by years of addiction, tried to drown herself while living at the New London house. O'Neill himself attempted suicide after divorcing his first wife, then discovered he had tuberculosis. His brother, Jamie, drank himself to death.

Eugene ONeill : Complete Plays 1932-1943 (Library of America) > Customer Review #2: Americas greatest plywright at his best!

This collection of work gives the reader ONeill, Americas greatest playwright, at his most powerful. The two earlier collections are likewise great, but this third one contains his two strongest works: "The Iceman Cometh" and "Long Days Journey Into Night." In "The Iceman Cometh," ONeill creates a world of happy derelicts. They spend their nights and days in Harry Hopes saloon, living through today by drinking and believing in the "pipe dreams" of tomorrow. That is until Hickey comes to town. He forces them, for the first time, to look honestly at their lives. This dose of reality has devestating affects on the patrons of Harrys.

American Literature, Biographies O'Neill, Eugene (Gladstone) Related Category: American Literature, Biographies O'Neill's first full-length play to be produced was Beyond the Horizon (1920; Pulitzer Prize), a grim domestic drama set in New England. After several "ambitious" failures, O'Neill's first great play, Desire under the Elms (1924), was produced; set in 19th-century New England, it dramatizes the impassioned battle for dominance between a hard, puritanical father and his sensitive son. O'Neill's next important work, The Great God Brown (1926), is a complicated, symbolic play about a modern man's futile struggle to identify himself with nature. Strange Interlude (1928; Pulitzer Prize), a nine-act drama, is a Freudian character study of an emotionally sterile woman, whose frequent asides give expression to her deeper thoughts and feelings. His other plays of the period include Marco Millions Lazarus Laughed (1928), and

Born October 6th, 1888, in New York City. Son of James O'Neill, the popular romantic actor. First seven years of my life spent mostly in hotels and railroad trains, my mother accompanying my father on his tours of the United States, although she never was an actress, disliked the theatre, and held aloof from its people.
From the age of seven to thirteen attended Catholic schools. Then four years at a non-sectarian preparatory school, followed by one year (1906-1907) at Princeton University
After expulsion from Princeton I led a restless, wandering life for several years, working at various occupations. Was secretary of a small mail order house in New York for a while, then went on a gold prospecting expedition in the wilds of Spanish Honduras. Found no gold but contracted malarial fever. Returned to the United States and worked for a time as assistant manager of a theatrical company on tour. After this, a period in which I went to sea, and also worked in Buenos Aires for the Westinghouse Electrical Co., Swift Packing Co., and Singer Sewing Machine Co. Never held a job long. Was either fired quickly or left quickly. Finished my experience as a sailor as able-bodied seaman on the American Line of transatlantic liners. After this, was an actor in vaudeville for a short time, and reporter on a small town newspaper. At the end of 1912 my health broke down and I spent six months in a tuberculosis sanatorium.
Began to write plays in the Fall of 1913. Wrote the one-act

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Eugene (Gladstone) O'Neill (1888-1953) One of the greatest American playwrights, restless and bold experimenter, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1936. Among O'Neill's best-known plays are ANNA CHRISTINE (pub. 1922), DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS (pub.1924), MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA (pub. 1931), LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO THE NIGHT (pub. 1956), and THE ICEMAN COMETH (prod. 1946). O'Neill's plays range in style from satire to tragedy. They often depict people who have no hope of controlling their destinies. "... we all are more or less the slaves of conventions, or of discipline, or of a rigid formula of some sort." Eugene O'Neill was born in New York into an Irish-Catholic theatrical family. His early life was restless: his father, who was an actor, spent most of his career touring in the lead role of the popular melodrama The Count of Monte Cristo . In 1895 O'Neill was enrolled in the St. Aloysius Academy for Boys, and transferred in 1900 to the DeLa Salle Institute in Manhattan. During these years his mother's addiction to morphine left profound emotional scars on O'Neill growing. He also found out that his own birth had precipitated his mother's addiction. In 1902 Ella O'Neill tried suicide. After renouncing Catholicism, O'Neill entered in 1902 the Betts Academy in Stamford, a nonsectarian preparatory school. Six years later he entered Princeton University, but left if after a year. During this period he spent most of the time in the New York waterfront bars and brothels.

Eugene (Gladstone) O'Neill (1888-1953). American playwright best known for explorations into the darker aspects of the human condition. Frequently, his plays show people on the outer edges of society or begin in a situation of ennui and despair and move dramatically downwards to a grim finish. Best known plays include: Desire Under the Elms Mourning Becomes Electra (1931), and The Iceman Cometh (1946). He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1920 for Beyond the Horizon and received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1936, making him the first US dramatist to do so. His autobiographical, and to an extent, darkest play, Long Day's Journey into Night was published posthumously in 1956. [Adapted from Wikipedia Browse

Biography Eugene O’Neill’s early life provided him materials for his plays. He was born on October 16, 1888 in New York City. James O’Neill, Eugene's father, was a famous actor and director. Ella O’Neill, Eugene's mother, had been educated in a convent. She became addicted to morphine after losing her second child. Eugene also had an older brother Jamie who was an actor. All three of the men in the family drank heavily. Eugene was raised in the theater, accompanying his father on tour. From age seven to fourteen, he went to Roman Catholic Schools. Eugene attended Princeton University at the age of eighteen, but dropped out after one year. Actually, he was about to be thrown out for committing some kind of prank. After Princeton, he decided he wanted to be a sailor. Before leaving for the sea, he secretly married Kathleen Jenkins. This was done in secrecy because his father did not approve of her. After six months at sea, Eugene contracted malaria and came home to tour with his father's company. Kathleen gave birth to his first child, Eugene Gladstone O’Neill, but Eugene rejected them. A short time later, they divorced. In 1912 Eugene was sick again with tuberculosis and he spent several months recovering in a sanitarium. It was at this time that Eugene began to write his plays. By 1914, he had his first work

    I liked the Wide Selection!

This book has a great many scenes and monologues, and nearly anyone can find one that works for them. While some of the plays that are excerpted are a bit obscure, I found this to be only a minor setback, thanks to the magic of online book purchasing. Excellent addition to your bookshelf...
A wide range of material for all capabilities

I found that this book was really useful because there is such a wide range of material, however, I did find that when I found a good monalogue and wanted to read the whole play it was not available anywhere on the net that I looked. This was bit annoying because it is impossible to successfully create a character from just a monalogue and is even difficult with the whole play. As I mentioned before there is a very wide range of plays, from Shakespeare to the author himself. ... Read more The Harcourt Brace Anthology of Drama by William B. Worthen
