Home Press Office Press Releases 19 October 2002 New Honorary Senators at the University of Heidelberg: Dr. Freudenberg, Dr. Hachmann and Prof. Osheroff On Saturday 19 October the University of Heidelberg conferred the status of Honorary Senator on Dr. Reinhart Freudenberg, Dr. Hans G. Hachmann and Prof. Dr. Douglas D. Osheroff Dr. Freudenberg, Dr. Hachmann, Rector Prof. Hommelhoff and Prof. Osheroff (from left). Photo : Rothe At a ceremony during the annual celebrations of the University of Heidelberg today, the University conferred the status of Honorary Senator on Dr. Reinhart Freudenberg, Dr. Hans G. Hachmann and Prof. Dr. Douglas D. Osheroff. In the words of Rector Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Peter Hommelhoff: "The outstanding distinction implicit in the title of Senator can be awarded for very different reasons. But there is one thing all our Honorary Senators have in common: their close links with the University." He went on to say that in the persons of Dr. Freudenberg, Dr. Hachmann and Prof. Osheroff the University had succeeded in co-opting outstanding personalities as Honorary Senators. The Senate as the supreme body of the University, Prof. Hommelhoff continued, represents the full range of subjects taught and all the different groupings in which university members are united. Such representation is especially notable at a full-scale University like Heidelberg and the structure of its Senate. "And precisely the same applies to the community of Honorary Senators and their close and meaningful links with the University. This distinction has been conferred on them for all kinds of reasons: paving the way for the University in distant areas of the world, building bridges across the oceans to link the University with partners overseas, concern for the integration of the University nearer home and understanding for its specific complexion, generous support for University projects, programmes or even buildings."

Home Press Office Press Releases 24 March 2003 Heidelberg Research Magazine "Ruperto Carola 1/2003": HIV — Anatomy of a Mass Killer The range of other topics extends from astrophysics, radiology and ethnology to Romance studies: A new window on the universe opens in Namibia — Radiation power pack to fight cancer — Non-European world views — Italy unconstituted — Interview with Nobel Prize laureate Osheroff: "I'm an unusual Senator" Like bubonic plague or smallpox, the acquired immune deficiency syndrome AIDS counts among the most devastating epidemics ever to have struck humanity. AIDS is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, HIV for short. Millions of people have been cut down by it so far. What makes this tiny virus capable of such depredations? Hans-Georg Kräusslich, director of the virology department of the Institute of Hygiene of the University of Heidelberg, outlines the answers in the new issue of Heidelberg's research magazine "Ruperto Carola 1/2003". In the title story of the magazine Kräusslich describes the molecular anatomy of HIV and explains the routes exploited by the virus in fatally debilitating the human immune system. The range of other topics extends from astrophysics, radiology and ethnology to Romance studies. Blue flashes from outer space: a new window on the universe opens in Namibia; Radiation power pack: heavy ions against cancer; What's left for us is right for them: non-European world views; Italy unconstituted: novellas tell of the longing for national unity. In an interview, Nobel Prize laureate Douglas Osheroff, newly elected honorary senator of the University of Heidelberg, confesses: "I'm an unusual senator".

October 9, 1996
Web posted at: 10:55 a.m. EDT (1455 GMT) STOCKHOLM, Sweden (CNN) Two U.S. scientists and a Briton, discoverers of a new form of the element carbon, will receive the Nobel Prize for chemistry, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced Wednesday. The Nobel Prize for physics, announced earlier in the day, will be awarded to three U.S. scientists for their work in low-temperature physics. University of Sussex professor Harold W. Kroto and Rice University professors Robert F. Curl Jr. and Richard E. Smalley will take the chemistry honor for their 1985 discovery of "fullerenes." "From a theoretical viewpoint, the discovery of the fullerenes has influenced our conception of such widely separated scientific problems as the galactic carbon cycle and classical aromaticity, a keystone of theoretical chemistry," the academy's citation said. Fullerenes are formed when vaporized carbon condenses in an atmosphere of inert gas, and are named for architect R. Buckminster Fuller. Fullerene clusters resemble Fuller's famed geodesic domes. Britain's Kroto said that it was "the greatest day of his life" to be honored with the Nobel Prize.

July 6, 2000
President William Jefferson Clinton The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20502 Dear Mr. President: We urge you not to make the decision to deploy an anti-ballistic missile system during the remaining months of your administration. The system would offer little protection and would do grave harm to this nation's core security interests. We and other independent scientists have long argued that anti-ballistic missile systems, particularly those attempting to intercept reentry vehicles in space, will inevitably lose in an arms race of improvements to offensive missiles. North Korea has taken dramatic steps toward reconciliation with South Korea. Other dangerous states will arise. But what would such a state gain by attacking the United States except its own destruction? While the benefits of the proposed anti-ballistic missile system are dubious, the dangers created by a decision to deploy are clear. It would be difficult to persuade Russia or China that the United States is wasting tens of billions of dollars on an ineffective missile system against small states that are unlikely to launch a missile attack on the U.S. The Russians and Chinese must therefore conclude that the presently planned system is a stage in developing a bigger system directed against them. They may respond by restarting an arms race in ballistic missiles and having missiles in a dangerous "launch-on-warning" mode.
