Nobel Peace Prize Modem ISDN On October 20, 1971 the Bundestag (Lower House of the Federal Parliament) is debating the 1972 budget. Suddenly the Bundestag President interrupts the session. Kai-Uwe von Hassel informs the House that a telegram has been received from the Nobel Committee, with the notification that Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1971. The delegates of the Bundestag - including the opposition - give Willy Brandt a standing ovation. The Nobel Committee elaborated: "Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt as chief of the West German government and in the name of the German nation has extended his hand in a policy of reconciliation among old enemy countries. His great accomplishment is that in the spirit of good will he has brought about the preconditions for peace in Europe." Brandt is the fourth German to have received this significant award: previous Nobel peace prize laureates are Gustav Stresemann Ludwig Quidde (1927), and Carl von Ossietzky

Willy Brandt is awarded the Peace Prize on December 10, 1971 in Oslo. In his acceptance address, Brandt states that "the honor of the prize award can be interpreted as encouragement of my political efforts but should not be seen as a final verdict. I wish to point out how much it means to me that my work in the name of the German nation is being recognized and that after the inextinguishable terror of the past I can see the name of my country and the will for peace being brought into concurrence."

Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg CARL VON OSSIETZKY UNIVERSITY OF OLDENBURG

The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg is one of the youngest universities in Germany. Founded in 1973, it grew out of the city's 200-year-old teacher training college. Since 1973 the number of students has increased from 2,500 to over 13,000. The campus features a new library, a sports center, a dining room/cafeteria, and the finest new university architectural complexes in the country for the Natural Sciences. The University of Oldenburg is named for Carl von Ossietzky (1888-1938), one of the outstanding journalists and pacifist in Germany at the time of the Weimar Republic. When the National Socialists (Nazis) seized power in 1933, Ossietzky was arrested because of his courageous stand for peace and democracy for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1935 after international pressure led to his release from the concentration camps.
Your life in Oldenburg will be filled with brand new experiences introduced by your "cultural buddy," a German student selected to be your guide to the university, city, and social scene. The University of Oldenburg offers unique opportunities not only to study language but also pop and classical music, sports science, Jewish Studies, Women's studies, and even belly dancing and juggling. Studying German language and culture at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg is truly an unforgettable experience.
CITY OF OLDENBURG
The city of Oldenburg is located in the northwest region of Germany in Lower Saxony, approximately 30 miles to the northwest from Bremen and 130 miles from Hamburg. The city has approximately 150,000 inhabitants. Medium-sized enterprises, retail and service industries characterize the economic life of the city. Oldenburg is home of a number of cultural institutions including a regional museum of art and cultural history, the Augusteum art museum, and the State Museum for Natural and Early History. Situated close to both the North Sea and the Zwischenahn Lake, it also possesses extensive public parks and recreational facilities.

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

Using false documents supplied by the Gestapo, he tried to prove that Ossietzky was a traitor. Ossietzky was awarded the prize but was forbidden to accept it. A new scheme to attract the brightest young foreign undergraduates to the UK has been started by Leicester University. Four physics students who were awarded medals at last year's International Physics Olympiad competition held in Leicester have received scholarships to start MPhys degrees at the university. Nobel Committee Presentation Announcement

    The Nobel Peace Prize 1986
Presentation Speech by Egil Aarvik, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee
Your Majesty, Your Royal Highnesses, Your Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is today exactly 50 years since the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the German public figure and pacifist, Carl von Ossietzky . That particular award was one of the most controversial ever made. The newly established Nazi regime in Germany was violently critical of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, and German citizens were forbidden to accept Nobel prizes in the future.
This type of reaction was in a way so predictable that it can be ignored. What we ought to be more interested in, on the other hand, is the type of reaction which came from countries other than Germany. Many were of course delighted, but there were also many commentators who were sceptical. Leading figures in politics and the press expressed the opinion that Ossietzky was too extreme in his warnings and revelations. Some believed him to be a communist. In any case, it was argued, the cause of peace was poorly served by a Peace Prize which seemed to be a direct provocation of the German government.
The Nobel Committee believes it is vital that we have such guides in an age when terror, repression, and racial discrimination still exist in the world.
