Wahl, D. Zum 70. Todestages von Wilhelm Ostwald Celebrating the 70th Anniversary of the Death of Wilhelm Ostwald A l’occasion du 70ème jour du décès de Wilhelm Ostwald Galvanotechnik, 92 (2002) 5, S. 1233-1236, 1 Abb., 1 Lit.-Hinw. Professor Wilhem Ostwald was active in the Universities of Riga and Leipzig. His main interest lay in the chemistry of catalysis and in recognition of this, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1909. His other main interest lay in Electrochemistry. In this field, he is remembered mainly for his derivation of the well-known “Ostwald’s Dilution Law” which was invaluable as a building block in the development of theories describing the physical chemistry of solutions. The work of Haber and Bosch, who developed the high-pressure catalytic synthesis of ammonia which bears their names, was in no small measure built on an understanding of the subject due to Ostwald.

Ostwald originated the Ostwald process for preparing nitric acid. Ammonia mixed with air is heated and passed over a catalyst (platinum). It reacts with the oxygen to form nitric oxide, which is then oxidized to nitrogen dioxide; this in turn reacts with water to form nitric acid.
