I was born in November 1912 in Jassy (Iasi), the old capital of Moldavia, the eastern province of Romania. My education was started in that city and was continued through a baccalaureate (continental style) at the "Al Hasdeu" Lyceum in Buzau. My father, Emil Palade, was professor of philosophy and my mother, Constanta Cantemir-Palade, was a teacher. The family environment explains why I acquired early in life great respect for books, scholars and education.
My father had hoped I was going to study philosophy at the University, like himself, but I preferred to deal with tangibles and specifics, and - influenced by relatives much closer to my age than he was - I entered the School of Medicine of the University of Bucharest (Romania) in 1930.
Delphinus delphi. It was an attempt to understand its structure in terms of the functional adaptation of a mammal to marine life.
I graduated in 1940 and, after a short period as an assistant in internal medicine, I went back to Anatomy, since the discrepancy between knowledge possessed by, and expected from, the medical practitioners of that time made me rather uneasy.
During the second world war, I served in the medical corps of the Romanian Army, and after the war - encouraged by Grigore Popa, Rainer's successor - I came to the United States in 1946 for further studies. I worked for a few months in the Biology Laboratory of Robert Chambers at

Palade, George E.,
in full GEORGE EMIL PALADE (b. Nov. 19, 1912, Iasi, Rom.), Romanian-born American cell biologist who developed tissue-preparation methods, advanced centrifuging techniques, and conducted electron microscopy studies that resulted in the discovery of several cellular structures. With Albert Claude and Christian de Duve he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1974. Palade received a degree in medicine from the University of Bucharest in 1940 and remained there as a professor until after World War II. He immigrated to the United States in 1946 and began work at the Rockefeller Institute in New York. Palade performed many studies on the internal organization of such cell structures as mitochondria, chloroplasts, the Golgi apparatus, and others. His most important discovery was that microsomes, bodies formerly thought to be fragments of mitochondria, are actually parts of the endoplasmic reticulum (internal cellular transport system) and have a high ribonucleic acid (RNA) content. They were subsequently named ribosomes. Palade became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1952 and in 1958 a professor of cytology at Rockefeller Institute, which he left in 1972 to direct studies in cell biology at Yale University Medical School.

In recent years the work of our laboratory was concentrated on the vascular endothelium, especially the continuous type of endothelium found in the microvasculature of muscles, myocardium and lungs. It led to the identification of plasmalemmal vesicles or caveolae of this type of endothelium as the transcytotic carriers for macromolecules, especially proteins larger than 20A diameter. It also led to the discovery of macromolecular complexes of lipids and proteins involved in targeting and membrane fusion and fission, present in the cytosol or associated with caveolae in the endothelium. Finally, we have been studying the effect of a number of factors, especially the vascular endothelium growth factor (VEGF), on angiogenesis and modifications of the microvasculature of tumors. Biography George Palade received a M.D. from the School of Medicine of the University of Bucharest, Romania; was a member of the faculty of that school until 1945 when he came to the United States for postdoctoral studies. He joined A. Claude at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in 1946 and was appointed assistant professor at Rockefeller in 1948; - progressed from assistant professor to full professor and head of the department until 1973 when he moved to Yale as professor and chair of the Section of Cell Biology. He became a senior investigator and Advisor to the Dean in 1983. In 1990, he moved to UCSD as Professor of Medicine in Residence, and Dean for Scientific Affairs.

Published on Tuesday, January 28, 2003 by the New York Times 41 Nobel Laureates Sign Against a War Without International Support by William J. Broad Forty-one American Nobel laureates in science and economics issued a declaration yesterday opposing a preventive war against Iraq without wide international support. The statement, four sentences long, argues that an American attack would ultimately hurt the security and standing of the United States, even if it succeeds. The signers, all men, include a number who at one time or another have advised the federal government or played important roles in national security. Among them are Hans A. Bethe, an architect of the atom bomb; Walter Kohn, a former adviser to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency at the Pentagon; Norman F. Ramsey, a Manhattan Project scientist who readied the Hiroshima bomb and later advised NATO; and Charles H. Townes, former research director of the Institute for Defense Analyses at the Pentagon and chairman of a federal panel that studied how to base the MX missile and its nuclear warheads. In addition to winning Nobel prizes, 18 of the signers have received the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest science honor.

Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel
