Dozens of Nobel laureates have converged on Oslo's Holmenkollen Park Hotel
to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Tibet's Dalai Lama, South African Bishop Desmond Tutu and Northern Ireland's
First Minister David Trimble are among the 36 laureates expected to attend
the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium.
The first such prize was presented in 1901. It was divided equally between
Jean Henry Dunant, the Swiss founder of the Red Cross, and Frederic Passy,
founder and president of the first French peace society.
Since then, it has been presented to political figures, religious leaders, activists and aid organisations from around the world. Nobel turns 100: A century of honoring top achievers
In 1921, the Royal Swedish Academy awarded Alfred Einstein the Nobel Prize in physics for his experiments with the photoelectric effect. (CNN) A century ago, the first Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Frederic Passy, the founder of a French peace society that laid a foundation for the United Nations. Today, as the Nobel committee prepares to announce its 100th awards, the organizations seeded by those two men are more viable than ever. So is the work of dozens of other Nobel laureates recognized over the decades in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and economics. Albert Einstein, Madame Curie, Martin Luther King Jr., Linus Pauling, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Nelson Mandela and Samuel Beckett are some of the well-known recipients of Nobel prizes. While the prizes are among the most prestigious awards in the world, they are not without controversy. Nobel laureates were often at the forefront of dramatic change in the 20th century, which saw an accelerated rate of scientific discoveries, along with two world wars and tremendous social upheaval.

China's banned Falun Gong spiritual group has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize OSLO, Norway The prestigious Nobel Peace Prize will be celebrating its 100th Aniversary with 126 nominees, including The Red Cross and China's banned Falun Gong spiritual group. Other nominees include a convicted U.S. killer, soccer's governing body FIFA, the European Court of Human Rights and U.N. Secretary General Koffi Annan. Geir Lundestad, director of the Nobel Institute, said on Tuesday: "We have a preliminary count of 126 candidates, of which 28 are organisations. "The number is likely to increase because nominations are still coming in, but I doubt we'll reach last year's record of 150 nominees. " He declined to give names but people making nominations often publicise their choices. Nominations for the prize, won by South Korean President Kim Dae-jung in 2000, had been postmarked by the February 1 deadline but continue to arrive.

    The Nobel prizes
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made. In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

Selama seratus tahun kehadirannya.

    (b. May 20, 1822, Paris, Franced. June 12, 1912, Paris), French economist and advocate of international arbitration who was cowinner (with Jean-Henri Dunant, founder of the Red Cross) of the first Nobel Peace Prize (1901). After serving as auditor for the French Council of State (1846-49), Passy devoted himself to writing, lecturing, and organizing on behalf of various economic reforms and philanthropies. An ardent free trader, he belonged to the 19th-century liberal tradition of the British economists Richard Cobden and John Bright, whom he knew personally. Passy's work for peace began during the Crimean War (1853-56). His plea for peace in the periodical Le Temps (1867) helped to avert war between France and Prussia over Luxembourg. In the same year he founded the International League for Peace, later known as the French Society for International Arbitration. After the Franco-German War (1870-71) he proposed independence and permanent neutrality for Alsace-Lorraine. As a member of the French Chamber of Deputies (from 1881), he successfully urged arbitration of a dispute between France and The Netherlands concerning the French Guiana-Surinam boundary. He assisted in founding the Inter-Parliamentary Union (1888) and remained active in the peace movement for the rest of his long life. Alister Doyle OSLO (Reuters) - The United Nations and Secretary-General Kofi Annan won the centenary Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for working for "a more peaceful world" in the 21st century by tackling challenges from poverty to terrorism. The choice brought a flood of praise from around the globe, except from survivors of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda who accused Annan of responsibility in failing to stop the slaughter. He was head of U.N. peacekeeping at the time. Woken in New York to be told of the Oslo committee's choice, Annan said it was a "wonderful feeling and a great encouragement" for the United Nations, which was set up in 1945 and now has 50,000 employees. "The Norwegian Nobel Committee wishes in its centenary year to proclaim that the only negotiable route to global peace and cooperation goes by way of the United Nations," committee leader Gunnar Berge said. The first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901. The prize citation said that Annan, a 63-year-old Ghanaian, had een "pre-eminent in bringing new life to the U.N." since ecoming the world's top diplomat in 1997.

Preface Novarum rerum cupidus Julius Caesar said of the Gauls that they coveted new things. Anyone familiar with the life of Alfred Nobel from his youth to his final breath will have realized that this extremely intelligent and educated industrialist had exactly the same passion. Per Olofsson from Noebbeloev, a small town in Sweden, can be regarded as the forefather of the Nobel family. After registering at the University of Uppsala to study law, he adopted - as was usual at the time - a Latinized name: Petrus Olavi Nobelius. The adjectival description of his place of origin, Nobelius, was later turned into the family name Nobel . Alfred Nobel wrote a will on 27 November 1895 which stated: "My remaining realizable assets shall be used as follows: The capital shall be invested in securities by my executor and shall form a fund the annual interest on which shall be awarded as a prize to those who in the past year have done the greatest good for mankind." Nobel then requested that the interest be divided into five equal parts and awarded for outstanding achievements in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace. After a settlement had been reached with Alfred Nobel's heirs, the Swedish government approved the founding statutes of the

La ricchezza di Nobel era derivata dalla sua capacità imprenditoriale di mettere a frutto e brevettare la scoperta della nitroglicerina del chimico italiano Ascanio Sobrero nel 1846.
