Thorvald Stoltenberg, President of the Norwegian Red Cross, presented UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and his wife Nane with the "Torstein Dales" memorial prize.
"Poverty and inequality are root causes of conflict and obstacles to peaceful development. The Red Cross Red Crescent struggles for peace every day through our network of millions of volunteers", said Federation President Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro.
"Economic exploitation creates vulnerability. Inequalities in terms of trade, in people's access to labour markets, to health and education, influence their possibility to make a livelihood. The consequences are on the agenda of the International Federation," pointed out Didier Cherpitel in the Nobel Prize Symposium.

Nobel Symposium
December 7, 2001
Oslo, Norway
Speech by Cora Weiss, President
International Peace Bureau
BUILD INSTITUTIONS FOR PEACEFUL CHANGE
The International Peace Bureau is honored to be among those who, as a previous Nobel chairman Egil Aarvik said of one laureate, "are not satisfied merely to draw attention to alarming trends, but to devote energy to turning the tide." (1982)
It was in that spirit that not only was the IPB elected a Nobel prize winner, but 13 of our officers have also been among laureates including the first, Frederic Passy in l901, Alva Myrdal a vice president in l982 and our past president, Sean Mac Bride, in l974.
The IPB, since l892, the most comprehensive international peace network, is committed to disarmament and a culture of peace. It was named a laureate , in the spirit of Alfred Nobel's plan to support, accelerate and promote the peace movement and for its support of the League of Nations. We are grateful, indeed the world must be grateful, for the award of this year's prize to the United Nations and its caring leader, Kofi Annan. We congratulate them.
Professor Nye addresses the power of the non state actor in the 21st century and quotes a British observer who wrote that American power is not great enough to solve a number of serious global problems.

Kemajuan teknologi informasi makin membuat masalah-masalah nasional jadi mendunia.

In 1984, Ben Weider , IFBB President, received the greatest honor of his long and distinguished career by being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Created by Alfred Nobel of Sweden, the Nobel Peace Prize has been recognized as "the greatest honor a man can receive in this world." The first prize was awarded in 1901 to Frederic Passy, Founder and President of the first French peace society and Jean Henry Dunant, Founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Geneva. Some of the many distinguished recipients include Theodore Roosevelt (1906), Albert Schweitzer (1952), Martin Luther King Jr. (1964), Mother Teresa (1979), Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev (1990), and Nelson Mandela (1993). Weider has spent his life fighting discrimination and his nomination recognized the significant work he has done in breaking down the barriers of color and race in both the world and sport. " Words cannot express the sincere gratitude this nomination has brought me ," stated Weider. While Bishop Desmond Tutu was the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Weider was thrilled that he was even considered for such a prestigious award. "

What Would You Like to Say
to the United Nations?
As part of the 2002 Intergenerational Peace Chain, you have an opportunity to send a message to the United Nations. When you submit the number of links in your peace chain, you also have the option to include a message that we will include in a presentation we'll be making to the United Nations later this year. Your message can be anything you wish that summarizes your peace chain a comment about making it, a hope or wish for peace, a quote or other thought, one or two key messages from your chain, etc. This is your chance to say something to the United Nations about what your hopes are for your world.
This activity also gives schools, families, and community groups a chance to teach children about what the UN is and what it does. If you like, you can do some research on the UN as you decide what message you would like to send.
The United Nations is the major peacekeeping body in the world. The main goals of the UN are to maintain international peace, to promote equal rights and people's self-determination, and to achieve cooperative solutions to international economic, social, cultural, and humanitarian problems.
The opening words to the United Nations charter are: "We the peoples of the United Nations have determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind."

May/June 2001 One Hundred Years of the Nobel Peace Prize
On April 4, an enthusiastic audience was treated to a talk by the world's leading expert on the history of the Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. Irwin Abrams, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at Antioch University. After retirement, Dr. Abrams had intended to pursue an interest in international education, but learning of a survey among teenagers on their heroes brought a change of direction. To his dismay, he found that, instead of government leaders, statesmen, or even sports figures, the youngsters' heroes were rock and roll stars. Dr. Abrams decided to introduce them and others to some real-life heroes, the Nobel Peace Prize laureates, those "ordinary people who became extraordinary." He is the author of the recently published The Words of Peace: The Nobel Peace Prize Laureates of the Twentieth CenturySelections from Their Acceptance Speeches and The Nobel Peace Prize and the Laureates, which he is currently updating and revising. Many of the recipients did indeed come from humble backgrounds. Ralph Bunche, honored for his work at the U.N. with the people of post-colonial countries, began life as a member of a poor family and the grandson of slaves. His remarkable grandmother was instrumental in keeping him in high school, after which he continued his education at UCLA, with the help of an athletic scholarship and by working as a janitor. Aided by scholarship and the support of the African- American community in Los Angeles, he was able to attend graduate school at Harvard.

Nobel laureates to be honoured at centennial ceremony
STOCKHOLM, (SWEDEN) OCT. 7. The discoverers of X-rays and a diphtheria vaccine were among a handful of dignitaries arriving in Stockholm in December 1901 with a secret. They were the first Nobel Prize winners, and had been asked to keep the decision to themselves until it was announced at a banquet that on December 10, the fifth anniversary of the death of the award's creator, Swedish Industrialist, Alfred Nobel. In neighbouring Norway, it was announced in Parliament that Red Cross founder, Jean Henri Dunant of Switzerland and French peace activist, Frederic Passy would share the first Nobel Peace Prize. They were informed in writing. It was very different from the hype and locked-tight secrecy that will accompany this week's centennial Nobel prizes, which begin on Monday with the prize for physiology or medicine. ``It has become bigger and bigger,'' historian Tore Fraengsmyr said. ``Of course this would be impossible to keep a secret in the modern world.'' The Physics prize is announced on Tuesday, the prizes in Chemistry and Economics come on Wednesday and the Peace Prize winner is named on Friday. No date has been set for the literature prize.

Anno XVII- n.04-01
Giulio Nascimbeni Il premio Nobel compie cent’anni.

http://www.cesil.com/aprile01/inglese/4luning.htm
Year XVII- n.04-01
Giulio Nascimbeni The Nobel Prize reaches its century. It was first awarded in 1901, established by Swedish industrialist Alfred Bernhard Nobel, who was born in Stockholm in 1833, died at San Remo in Italy in 1896, and whose name is linked for ever to the discovery of dynamite. It seems right to recall the names of the first winners. For physics, the German Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen, discoverer of X-rays. For chemistry, the Dutchman Jacobus Van’t Hoff, the founder of stereo-chemistry. For medicine, the German Emil Von Behring, the discoverer of diphtheria serum. For literature, the French poet Sully-Prudhomme. For peace, the Swiss philanthropist Jean-Henry Dunant, who promoted the foundation of the Red Cross, and the French economist Frederic Passy, who in 1867 founded the International League for Peace and in 1870 the Society for Arbitration between Nations. To mention of the weak point of this list comes spontaneously. The Frenchman Sully-Prudhomme was not a poet who merited such glory. That year, there was a giant like Tolstoy not only alive (he died in 1910) but still very active, who had just published one of his masterpieces, the novel “Resurrection”. Literature, in fact, has a very distinctive history in the history of the Nobel prizes. While one can reasonably claim that almost all the winners in the scientific sectors fully merited their prize, the same cannot be said for the writers and poets. Overlooking Tolstoy was the first sign of a future that led, over the years, to overlooking other great writers including Joyce, Musil, Frost, Borges and (why not) D’Annunzio and Simenon.
