Wolfgang Pauli (1900-1958)
Nobel Prize for Physics 1945
Wolfgang Pauli was only 25 when he discovered a natural law that would earn him the Nobel Prize for Physics twenty years later "in recognition of his discovery of the exclusion principle, also known as the Pauli principle". He found that in an atom no two electrons can have the same quantum state. Wolfgang Pauli was born in Vienna in 1900, the son of Wolfgang Pauli, a doctor and professor of biochemistry. As a 20-year-old student at the University of Munich, he became increasingly involved in quan tum physics under the influence of Amold Sommerfeld, a brilliant theoretician of the time. At Sommerfeld's request, Pauli wrote a chapter on the theory of relativity for an important encyclopaedia of mathematics, all the contributors to which were renowned academics. This chapter was to become one of the most significant works on the subject. Einstein, who never published major books about his theories, reviewed Pauli's text before it was published and expressed his amazement at the mathematical talent and clear writing of the brilliant young scientist. Between 1921 and 1928, Pauli worked at the universities of Goettingen, Copenhagen and Hamburg in succession. He then moved to the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich as professor of theoretical physics and Peter Debye's successor. He organized seminars with Gregor Wentzel from the University of Zurich, and the city developed into a major research centre. Then war broke out. Pauli emigrated to the United States and was naturalized in 1946. He remained in contact with the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, however, and returned to Switzerland shortly after the war. He settled in Zollikon and became a Swiss citizen.

Wolfgang Pauli

Many brilliant scientists contributed to the development of what has been called "modern" physics during the twentieth century. Wolfgang Pauli, who would have reached his century this year, contributed more than most but unfortunately died at the relatively young age of fifty-eight. Background information
Pauli was born in April 1900 in Vienna. His father was a doctor and biochemist and his mother was an author. Pauli soon showed that he was very bright. He found school boring and secretly read the latest papers on modern physics while sitting at his desk in class. In 1918 he began his studies in Munich, then a famous centre for theoretical physics. Two years later he was asked to write an essay on Einstein's theory of relativity for an encyclopaedia. He wrote 250 pages in which he analysed all that was known about the subject. It was described as "simply masterful". He was awarded a doctorate in the shortest possible time.
Pauli married twice, first to Kate Depner and then in 1934 to Franciska Bertram but had no children. During the 2nd World War, he moved to Princeton in the USA but returned to Zurich in 1946. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in 1945. He continued his work but died suddenly in 1958.

Francis Crick
Compiled by Peter Ellis
Genetic modification, clones, the human genome project - genetics is always in the news. Nearly fifty years ago Francis Crick and Jim Watson had the big idea that started the race to read and control genes. Background information
Francis Crick was born on 8th June 1916 in Northampton. From school he went to University College, London to study physics and afterwards began research for his Ph.D. It was 1939 and the Second World War arrived to interrupt his studies. The Admiralty took him on to work on mines for the Navy. During the war he married Ruth Dodd and they had a son, Michael. When the war ended, so did Crick's marriage and he decided that he was interested in biology. In 1949 he was lucky enough to be awarded a studentship at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge working with the famous scientist, Max Perutz. In the same year Crick married Odile Speed. They had two daughters Gabrielle and Jacqueline.
Biology was changing New techniques like X-ray crystallography were being used to investigate the molecules that make up living things. Crick joined Perutz's team exploring the structures of proteins. At the time it was known that the nuclei of cells contained proteins and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) but there was still argument about which substances carried the genetic code.

Pauli centenary
Wolfgang Pauli: never to be excluded This year marks the 100th anniversary of Wolfgang Pauli, who was born in Vienna on 25 April 1900 and died in Zürich on 15 December 1958. Maurice Jacob describes several events that have been arranged to mark the Pauli centenary.
Pauli and mother
Wolfgang Pauli - long the "conscience of physics" - was professor at ETH-Zürich for 30 years, from 1928 to 1958, except during the Second World War, when he was at Princeton at the Institute for Advanced Study. To honour his centenary, the ETH Library organized a special exhibition, which was first presented at ETH Zürich in April and May.
The exhibition, which beautifully illustrates Pauli's life, has now moved to CERN where it is on display in the Main Building from 17 August until 26 September. A ceremony in the Council Chamber on Monday 11 September at 4.30 p.m. will include short presentations from Maurice Jacob (chairman of the Pauli Committee), Konrad Osterwalder (Rektor of the ETH Zürich), Luciano Maiani (director-general of CERN) and Charles Enz (University of Geneva) on Pauli's life and legacy.
It is natural that CERN honours in this way one of the greatest physicists of the past century. Pauli acted as custodian of intellectual integrity while the field underwent tremendous development. He discovered the Exclusion Principle, which he formulated in 1924 and for which he was awarded the Nobel prize in 1945. He predicted the existence of the neutrino in 1930. However, he first became known through the publication of his famous 1921 review on relativity, when he was a student of Arnold Sommerfeld's. Many physicists, including Einstein, much admired this article, later reprinted as a book.
