Pavlov, Ivan Petrovich 1849-1936, Russian physiologist and experimental psychologist. He was professor at the military medical academy and director of the physiology department at the Institute for Experimental Medicine, St. Petersburg, from 1890. Pavlov was a skillful ambidextrous surgeon; using dogs as experimental animals, he established fistulas from various parts of the digestive tract by which he obtained secretions of the salivary glands, pancreas, and liver without disturbing the nerve and blood supply. For his work on the physiology of the digestive glands he received the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. Using the same technique to create an artificial exterior pouch of the stomach, he experimented on nervous stimulation of gastric secretions and thus discovered the conditioned reflex (see behaviorism ), which has had widespread influence in neurology and psychology. He also demonstrated that specific areas in the cerebral cortex are concerned with specific reflexes and based on these findings a mechanistic theory of human behavior that found political favor; in 1935 the government built a laboratory for him. His chief work was Conditioned Reflexes (1926, tr. 1927).

Born: September 14, 1849 in Ryazan, Russia
Died: February 27, 1936 in Leningrad, USSR Nobel Prize: 1904 Biography: Ivan Petrovich Pavlov (1849-1936) originally wanted to have a career in religion, but he abandoned that in favor of science. Under his direction, the Department of Physiology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine became one of the most productive and important research centers in the world when it came to physiology. It was here between 1891 and 1900 that he performed most of his studies on behavior and digestion. By studying the development of conditioned reflexes, Pavlov found that it was possible to study psychological phenomena objectively, rather than relying solely on subjective personal reports. Academician Ivan Petrovich Pavlov (1854 - 1929) is the first Russian Nobel laureate, the Honorable Doctor of the Cambridge University, member of 132 academies and societies, the first physiologist of the world. The scientific activity of Pavlov lasted for more than six decades. His name is connected with the most remarkable discoveries in the sphere of blood circulation physiology, digestion and central nervous system. The scientist Pavlov was a real citizen of his country. His name is the symbol of the high spirituality of Russian intelligentsia, conscience of Russian science. He was always very attentive to problems, ideas and hopes of his homeland, Russia. I.P.Pavlov is the symbol of Russia. He developed investigations in the field of physiology and pathology of the human and animal higher nervous activity, cortico-visceral interrelations, neurogenetics, evolutionary and comparative physiology. Studies on physiology of the sensory and visceral systems were developed intensively. An important aspect of the performed investigations was analysis of the regulatory effect of the nervous system upon the organism functional systems and processes of their autoregulation. Pavlov Institute of Physiology of the Russian Academy of Science was founded in 1925 by Ivan Pavlov. Under his guidance, in 1925-1936, problems ofphysiology, pathology, and genetics of the higher nervous activity were intensively investigated. In 1930s-1990s, directors of the Institute were prominent researchers and organizers of science, members of the USSR Academy of Sciences. At present, Pavlov Institute of Physiology of the Russian Academy of Sciences is the largest multiprofile physiological institution of the country.

    Ivan P. Pavlov
Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was born in 1849 in Ryazan, Russia, at the beginning of one of the most fertile intellectual eras in Russian history.
In accordance with his father's wishes, he attended the local theological seminary until a growing interest in the natural sciences led him to rebel against his intended career. He went on to obtain a medical degree from the Imperial Medicosurgical Academy in 1879.
He then studied physiology in Germany briefly before being appointed professor of pharmacology at the St. Petersburg Institute of Experimental Medicine in 1890.
He won the Nobel Prize in 1904 for his research on the physiology of digestion. At this time, he began research on conditioned reflexes in dogs, thus becoming the pioneer in classical conditioning. Pavlov spent the rest of his life studying conditioning, which he believed was a useful research method for studying physiology. He engaged in research actively until his death at the age of 87 in 1936. and
