Lester Bowles Pearson 1897-1972 Lester B.Pearson was born on April 23,1897, in Newtonbrook, near Toronto. He attended University of Toronto until 1915. After service abroad in The First World War he continued his education at Oxford University. He was a lecturer in history in Toronto until 1928, when he joined the Canadian Department of External Affairs as First Secretary. In 1945 Pearson became Canada's first ambassador to Washington. The next year he returned to Canada and became under-secretary of State for External Affairs. In 1948 he was elected to a seat in Parliament for Algoma East as a Liberal. Pearson took an active part in the UN Organization and was president of The Seventh UN General Assembly. In 1957 Pearson was awarded Nobel Peace Prize for his greatest diplomatic achievement, proposal of sending UN peacekeeping force to the Suez Canal area. He became fourteenth prime minister of Canada in 1963,when the Liberal party, whose leader he was, won the elections. During his term, the Canadian flag was adopted, the Canada Assistance Plan and Medicare were introduced, as well as the Canada Pension Plan. He is also responsible for the introduction of bilingualism and biculturalism in Canada. Lester Pearson died on December 27,1972.

Biography of Lester Pearson Some of the important dates in Lester's Canadian Political Career were when he joined External Affairs as First Secretary in Ottawa, Ontario on August 28, 1928. In 1935 to 1941, he served in High Office of the Commissioner for Canada in London, UK. In May 1941, he became the Assistant Undersecretary of State, External Affairs, Ottawa. In June 1942, he was the Minister - Counselor, Canadian Legation in Washington, D.C. In July of 1944, Lester was promoted to Minister Plenipotentiary, Canadian Legation in Washington, D.C. In January 1958 to the spring of 1968, Lester was the Liberal Party Leader. In April 22, 1963 to April 1968 Lester was the Prime Minister of Canada. In the spring of 1968, Pearson retired from politics. For three years after his political career, he was a professor and chancellor at Carleton University in Ottawa. Some of the important dates in Lester Pearson's United Nations Career will be highlighted. In 1935, he participated in pre-UN international conferences on issues such as disarmament and international law and the League of Nations. On July 1943 to October 1945, Lester was the Chairman, and Interim Committee on Food and Agriculture. Pearson, Lester B., Lester Pearson, 1963 Canadian Press in full LESTER BOWLES PEARSON (b. April 23, 1897, Toronto, Ont., Can.d. Dec. 27, 1972, Ottawa), politician, diplomat, and prime minister of Canada (1963-68), who was prominent as a mediator in international disputes. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1957. Pearson served in World War I (1914-18) and lectured in history at the University of Toronto (1924-28), after studying there and at the University of Oxford. He joined the Canadian foreign service in 1928 and became first secretary in the Department of External Affairs. He served on two royal commissions (1931) and as counselor of the Canadian high commissioner's office in London (1935). Recalled to Canada in 1941, Pearson then served as ambassador to the United States in 1945-46. He headed the Canadian delegation at the United Nations from 1948 to 1956, and he was president of the United Nations General Assembly in 1952-53. In 1948 he became secretary of state for external affairs in the Liberal government of Louis Saint Laurent and entered Parliament for Algoma East. He represented Canada at the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in 1949, and in 1951 he was chairman of that organization. In 1957 he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to solve the Suez crisis of 1956. Pearson succeeded Saint Laurent as leader of the Liberal Party in 1958 and became prime minister in 1963. His government introduced a national pension plan and a family assistance program, broadened old-age security benefits, and laid the groundwork for the National Free Medical Service. Under Pearson, the government also introduced Canada's first distinctive national flag and adopted an official national anthem. Pearson resigned as prime minister in 1968 and retired from politics.

Lester Bowles Pearson Lester Bowles Pearson was born on April 23, 1897, in Toronto, Ontario. He was a former Olympic hockey player and university professor. In 1945 he became ambasador to United States, and attended the San Francisco conference on the UN Charter. In 1948, he was elected to the Canadian House of Commmons, and in 1949, he represented Canada at signing of the NATO pact. In 1951, he was elected chairman of the NATO council, and in 1952, he was elected president of the UN General Assembly, and then in 1958 he was elected the Leader of the Liberal Party. Pearson served as the Prime Minister of Canada from April 22, 1963 to April 21, 1968. He succeeded John G. Diefenbaker, whose Conservative government fell during a dispute between Canada and the United States. Diefenbaker had refused to allow atomic warheads on defense missiles provided by the United States. Pearson , a Liberal, believed that Canada had agreed to accept the warheads and should do so. Pearson then resigned as Prime Minister in 1968. He was succeeded by Liberal Party leader Pierre E. Trudeau. Before taking office as prime minister, Pearson has won fame as an international statesman. He was the first Canadian to receive the Nobel peace prize, in 1957. In 1948, as Canada's secretary of state for external affairs, Pearson had helped establish the North Atlantic Treaty Organization(NATO), a military alliance of 15 Western nations. He also served on a United Nations commission that drew up cease-fire plans in the Korean War. Pearson then became president of the UN General Assembly in 1952.
