Lester Bowles Pearson (1897-1972) When Lester B. Pearson became Canada's 14th Prime Minister, he had already received the Nobel Peace Prize for creating the United Nations peace-keeping force during his term as President of the General Assembly of the United Nations. While Prime Minister, Pearson's government established the Canada Pension Plan, universal health care and the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism. It also adopted a striking new flag. Thanks to Pearson's initiatives at the United Nations, that flag is now recognized world wide as the symbol of a peace-loving nation. Danek Mozdzenski, the Edmonton-based sculptor responsible for creating this monument, completed the statue in 1989. From where the monument sits, at least twelve Canadian flags can be seen flying in the skies above Ottawa.

Lester Bowles Pearson Lester Bowles Pearson, was a Canadian statesman, former Olympic hockey player, university professor and prime minister. He was born on April 23, 1897, in Newtonbrook near Toronto. He was the son of Edwin Arthur Bowles Pearson, a Methodist minister and Sarah Bowles Pearson. He had an older brother Marmaduke and a younger brother Vaughan. He had a great interest in sports and became a star athlete. He was also an excellent student. He joined the Canadian army in 1915 and served in World War I. Pearson attended the University of Toronto and then Oxford, earning a master's degree in history; he returned to teach (1924-28) at Toronto. For the next seven years he served as first secretary in the Department of External Affairs and after a stint in London during the 1940 blitz became assistant undersecretary of state (1941), Canadian ambassador to the United States (1945-46), and undersecretary of state (1946). He married Maryon Elspeth Moody on August 22, 1925. She was one of his students at the university. They had two children, Geoffrey Arthur Holland Pearson, who became a Canadian Foreign Service Officer and Patricia Lillian Pearson, wife of Walter Hannah, a Toronto physician. Maryon Pearson disliked public life, but she played an active role in her husbands election campaigns. Pearson once said "I couldn't have carried on without her." Two years later he entered Parliament and was named secretary of state for external affairs by Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent. Pearson won (1957) the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the SUEZ CRISIS of 1956; he drafted and presented a resolution calling for the creation of a United Nations peace-keeping force after the abortive British-French-Israeli invasion of Egypt over the Suez Canal.

There were many other factors when I decided to choose Pearson as the most influential Canadian, one being he worked for world peace in many countries. Many of the committees he formed were working to develop better facilities in places where food and water were not a given. While on the commission topic I also chose Pearson because he was not scared to start new things and develop new ideas. He was a go-getter type of guy who wanted to make the world a better place. He represented Canada well as a diplomat serving in many nations for long periods of time. The main reason I chose Pearson was for the work that went into the Suez Crisis, for which he earned the Nobel Peace Prize. Mike was a great political leader as well. He served as an excellent defense party, but was better in the Prime Minister position. He introduced many new bills that Canada still has in place today and he battled long and hard for people’s rights, especially the French. Although he did not serve very long as Prime Minister, he has a long list of accomplishments that many great Prime ministers cannot match. Pearson may have had the best of times, but he also suffered many downfalls, but his made him become a better person and politician. Many people who have reached this high status, may think they are better than others, but Mike did not think like that. He had a confident look on his face, but he was a good person in general. He always saw the good in situations. Where no hope could be found Mike came to the situation and created something wonderful. While doing this, he helped many unfortunate groups of people reach respectability.

Lester Pearson was involved in the creation of the North Atlantic Treaty, and is especially known for Article Two. Pearson, like Achilles, Hickerson, and others, was trying to create the Atlantic Union of Clarence Streit through Article Two. Article Two is also know as the "Canadian Article." After his long, hard fight for Article Two, Lester never stopped trying to get it fully implemented. In May of 1956 - Lester was appointed to a committee - the Committee of the Three - AKA the "Three Wise Men." *See "More than Military" essay about the non-military aspect of the NAT - and its Article Two - and Lester's fight for it! Pearson signing the NAT - 4 Apr. 49 - for Canada - and his beloved Article Two! Pearson calls 1956 the busiest and the most exciting of his career. Part of the Committee's questioning were the development of non-military aspects of the Alliance and keeping the Alliance together if the fear of a threat were removed.
