ACTION ITEMS With the increasing pace of the introduction of new technologies, most Fortune 1000 companies are evaluating the impact of information systems on their strategic direction in the next millennium. One of the most experienced and knowledgeable figures in the technical world, scientist and Nobel Prize winner Dr. Arno Penzias, recently talked about these trends with ComputerWorld, looking to the next millennium. Dr. Penzias won the 1978 Nobel Prize in physics and was the vice president and chief scientist at Bell Laboratories. He is also the author of two highly acclaimed books on information technology, especially its impact on business and society, "Ideas and Information" and "Harmony and Business, Technology and Life After Paperwork." In an interview with ComputerWorld in January 1999, Dr. Penzias considered large scale data mining from very large databases as the key application for corporations in the next few years. In response to ComputerWorld's age-old question of "What will be the killer applications in the corporation?" Dr. Penzias replied: "Data mining." He then added: "Data mining will become much more important and companies will throw away nothing about their customers because it will be so valuable. If you're not doing this, you're out of business" he said. Regarding the systems implications of this trend, Dr. Penzias commented: "There will be huge databases everywhere. They will get bigger than processors, so you have to back them up in some mountain in Tennessee at night."

"'Invention' is an important word: It's the creative product of the human mind. You have to start with invention. But innovation means that you change somebody's world. You change a life. And that's very hard to do. In fact, I don't know of a single ivory tower that's ever done well."
More ... Beyond his technical and scientific research, Penzias has also been interested in aligning companies' management practices with their technical capacities. "I did quite a bit at Bell Labs to make the organization more relevant to changes in both technology and business," says Penzias. "It was important to cultivate a startup culture in a technology venture, even within a very big company. Today, this sounds like a no-brainer, but in those days, it was an original approach." Since leaving the East Coast-based Bell Labs for California, Penzias has leveraged his technical knowledge and his understanding of management and strategy into a new role in Silicon Valley's venture-capital community. He joined New Enterprise Associates, a venture-capital firm that specializes in early-stage investments in information technology and medical- and life-science companies, as a venture partner in 1997.

Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series-Nobel Prize-winning scientist Dr. Arno Penzias will present A Personal View of the Big Bang
Wednesday, Nov. 13
Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series-Nobel Prize-winning scientist Dr. Arno Penzias will present A Personal View of the Big Bang, a non-technical, illustrated talk Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 7 to 8:30 p.m . in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.
In this rare public appearance, he will discuss the work that earned him the 1978 Nobel Prize, including how he and Robert Wilson used a sensitive radio telescope at Bell Laboratories in the 1960s to detect the radiation echo of the Big Bang-showing that the universe did indeed begin in an unimaginably hot, dense, explosive state. The lecture is appropriate for students age 13 and older. Admission is free. Arrive early to locate parking. Visitors must purchase a required campus parking permit for $2. Parking lots 1, 5, 6 and 7 provide easy access to the theater. From Interstate 280, exit El Monte Road and travel west.
