In his video address, Mandela called for the world to focus its attention on alleviating poverty and deprivation through multilateral efforts under the UN and its agencies. Because of poverty, he explained, "the future of all of us is under threat." He urged participants to "move beyond high-sounding rhetoric" to tackle world problems such as AIDS and the debt burden on developing countries.
Ramos-Horta thanked the international community for its generosity in helping to resolve the turmoil in East Timor, where presidential elections are to be held in April. He pointed out that his predominantly Catholic country’s first Chief Minister is a Muslim of Arab descent. Ramos-Horta’s explanation for East Timor’s success at achieving stability: leadership.
Zoran Djindjic, Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, told participants that world leaders are not yet able to prevent conflict, but instead react to crises as they arise. It is important for the international community to reward progress of countries and regions struggling to achieve stability and steady development. His country faces 30% unemployment and must care for 600,000 refugees. "To keep stable, we need support," he pleaded. "The world will have something to lose if this stability doesn’t last."
Peres argued that as the possession of land has become less and less a factor in a people’s success, land holdings may be small, but even in limited space, industrial and technological parks can be built. Countries should focus on education, not armed conflict. He proposed a "global pharmacy" which would dispense medicines to countries that need them so long as governments introduce reforms and seriously tackle domestic problems.

Peres will present the Bartels Fellowship Lecture on Wednesday, March 17, at 8 p.m. in the Alice Statler Auditorium, Statler Hall. Titled "What Would Peace in the Middle East Look Like?" the lecture is free and open to the public. Peres, 75, served as prime minister from 1984 to 1986 and again following Yitzhak Rabin's assassination in November 1995, remaining as prime minister until the Labor Party was defeated in the elections of May 1996. He currently serves in the Knesset, Israel's parliament. Peres' one-day visit to Cornell is hosted by the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies. He will meet with students and faculty from government classes and student groups. In 1994, as foreign minister, Peres shared the Nobel Prize with Rabin and Yasser Arafat for their work on the Peace Accords. Under the agreement, Israel recognized the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and laid the foundation for gradual transition toward Palestinian control of the occupied West Bank. He has harshly criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's policies toward the PLO for being too confrontational. In late 1996 he told a

by Mikhail Gorbachev and Shimon Peres
GENEVA There is one salient fact that overrides all others in the 21st century: Today's 6 billion people projected to grow to 8 billion within the next 25 years must share the same amount of water on this planet shared by less than one-sixth that many before the turn of the 19th century.
As population grows, economies develop and megacities expand, greater and greater demand will be placed on freshwater supplies. Unlike a resource such as oil, for which coal, wind or nuclear power can be an alternative, water has no substitute.
This condition can either be a motor for peace, leading to unprecedented cooperation to manage supplies, or it can generate greater conflict, perhaps even war in water-scarce regions.
