Shimon Peres breakfasts at Buck's in Woodside
A private breakfast at Buck's restaurant in Woodside May 4 featured a prominent guest Shimon Peres, Nobel Laureate, former prime minister of Israel, and co-founder of the Labor Party of Israel. Mr. Peres, who founded the Peres Center for Peace in Israel, shared his vision with Silicon Valley leaders of how the Internet can be used as a force for peace, said Isabel Maxwell, president of Commtouch, a Santa Clara-based e-mail and messaging software company. He discussed practical means of realizing that vision in the Middle East and beyond, said Ms. Maxwell, who hosted the breakfast. She was recently appointed a member of the board of governors of the Peres Center for Peace. Attending the breakfast were Tim Koogle of Yahoo!, Les Vadasz of Intel, and Steve Jurvetson of Draper Fisher Jurvetson. Mr. Peres' visit here was part of a private tour of the United States, which included a speech at a Tahoe conference sponsored by Red Herring, a high-tech investing magazine, and stops in Los Angeles and Miami, said Ms. Maxwell.

Richard Amalvy, Project Manager, introduced to Mr. Shimon Peres the objectives of the Peace Cruise. "We can tell, our friends, that this was indeed one of our best days. We spent it in Holy Jerusalem; we went first to see the holy monuments of Al Aqsa Mosque, the western wall, the dome of the rock and the Holy Sepulchre. It was quite a great experience to witness the mixing and the intercultural of the different religions. The city was really crowded but we made our way to meet the deputy minister of foreign affairs. At noon, we had a good meeting with Mr. Nawaf Massalkha, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs which helped us to understand more the political situation of the region.

He was part of a National Unity Government after elections in 1984, serving as Prime Minister until 1986, when he handed the reins to Yitzhak Shamir . As Minister of Foreign Affairs, Peres participated in secret peace negotiations in Norway, and as a result shared the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize with Rabin and Yasser Arafat . After Rabin 's assassination in 1995, Peres again became Prime Minister, but lost in the 1996 elections to Benjamin Netanyahu and in 1997 declined to seek the leadership of the party.

Tarik Kafala

Ever since the assassination of the late Prime Minister Rabin, Peres has been the leading spokesman for a negotiated peace. Despite his recent defeat, he continues to be an important presence on the Israeli political scene. The film traces Israel's secret road to peace with the PLO and highlights the late Prime Minister Rabin's own critical role. Narrated by Itzhak Perlman, The Battle for Peace uses rare archival film and exclusive interviews from such notables as Israeli President Ezer Weizman, and Yossi Beilin and Dr. Yair Hirshfeld both of whom spearheaded Israel's secret talks with the PLO; Rabbi David Hartman; U.S. Ambassador Samuel Lewis; and the Palestinian human rights activist, Hanan Ashrawi. Commentary: At Red Herring's Venture 2000 conference, former Israeli prime minister Shimon Peres urged American businesses to expand into the Middle East.
By Tony Perkins
May 9, 2000
Shimon Peres, former prime minister of Israel and Nobel laureate, spoke to a packed house at our Venture 2000 conference in Lake Tahoe, California, last week. His realistic perspective of the world economy expanded many conference attendees' views of what it means to build a global business. Covering many topics, from the fall of communism in Russia to the massive opportunity the Middle East represents, Mr. Peres was eloquent and pragmatic as he requested American businesses to consider expanding into the Middle East. Below are some excerpts from his speech. I hope you find it as meaningful as I did. As always, I look forward to your feedback.
THE GLOBAL VIEW
LAKE TAHOE, CALIFORNIA Shimon Peres implored the venture capitalists and entrepreneurs at our Venture 2000 conference to look beyond their balance sheets. "In final judgment the sheet of your balance will only be a function of the wider responsibilities you carry on your shoulders, willingly or unwillingly."

Epilogue to Israeli Elections
Dr Abdelwahab Al-Affendi from the Center for Study of Democracy at the Westminster University published his article under the headline “Shimon Peres: Political Obituary” in The Daily Star . The author of the “obituary” wrote about the sadness with which he witnessed the defeat of Israel’s Labour Party at the recent parliamentary elections. However, the party’s defeat was even a sadder event for Former Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, “the generous Nobel Prize laureate who has to watch the country seeking salvation and protection of a war criminal.”
Al-Affendi says that Peres partly shares the burden of the Israeli leadership’s responsibility for the oppression of the Palestinian people. But at the same time he respects Peres as a politician who has been establishing contacts with those whom he called “our Arab brothers” for many years.
At present, the leader of the Labour Party is also unsympathetic for al-Affendi; the author of the article considers PeresÂ’ position unsteady and contradictory. The scientist says that the peace process is dying out, and the Labour Party is quitting the political scene at the same time.
As for Shimon Peres, he is just one of the party’s permanent leaders; what is more, he will be 80 soon, the age is not very “creative” for a politician.

Shimon Peres: All The Excuses Make No Difference
By Gideon Levy
An Open Letter - Ha'aretz Daily
Thursday, January 24, 2002
In the 24 years of our acquaintance, four of which I spent working as your aide, this is the third time I have written you an open letter. In 1989, when you were finance minister in the Shamir government and the first intifada was raging, I used these pages to write "A letter to a former boss." Then, I told you that "for the first time in your life, you have nothing left to lose - except the prospect of vanishing into thin air." This was after you kept silent in the face of the IDF's conduct in the intifada, in the face of the continuation of the occupation and Israel's stubborn refusal to recognize the PLO as the representative of the Palestinians. At the time, I believed that you thought differently from Yitzhak Shamir and Yitzhak Rabin (known then as the "bone-breaker"), but that you just weren't bold enough to speak up.
Eleven years later, in 2000, I wrote you another open letter. This was after Oslo and the Rabin assassination, and after you again had lost an election - this time, to the office of president. Then, I said: "Many Israelis see you as a different person now. For them, you represent the hope of something else." And now, as I write to you again, I have to say: You no longer represent hope for anything.
