This isn't humour, but I didn't know where else to put it.
Today, at a time when fundamentalist Islamic extremism is affecting so much of our world, I think it's interesting to note the statistical difference between Arabs and Jews shown below. I think that if the fanatics spent less time on politics and religion, and more on 'useful endeavours' (lots of room for discussion here!), it would be a good thing for their people and for everyone. As it is, they have only managed to accomplish a lot of chanting and rocking about ARAB/ISLAMIC NOBEL WINNERS JEWISH NOBEL WINNERS 19.6% of World's Population

http://www.sepp.org/heidelberg_appeal.html
The Heidelberg Appeal
Background The Heidelberg Appeal was publicly released at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. By the end of the 1992 summit, 425 scientists
and other intellectual leaders had signed the appeal. Since then, word of mouth has prompted hundreds more scientists to lend their
support. Today, more than 4,000 signatories, including 72 Nobel Prize winners, from 106 countries have signed it. In spite of this
spontaneous and growing support from the world's scientific community, the Heidelberg Appeal has received little media attention. Neither a statement of corporate interests nor a denial of environmental problems, the Heidelberg Appeal is a quiet call for reason and a
recognition of scientific progress as the solution to, not the cause of, the health and environmental problems that we face. The Appeal
expresses a conviction that modern society is the best equipped in human history to solve the world's ills, provided that they do not
sacrifice science, intellectual honesty, and common sense to political opportunism and irrational fears.

Helen D. Megaw
Dr. Helen Megaw, born on June 1st 1907, died on February 26th at the age of 94. She was a well- known, highly respected and remarkable member of one of the most important scientific disciplines of the 20th century, namely the field of Crystallography. In her own words, this is ”the branch of science concerned with the description of the structure and properties of condensed matter in terms of the spatial relationships of atoms and interatomic forces in an extended array•. I should explain that the term extended array‘ means a ”crystal• for it is the repeated stacking of molecular units in all directions that distinguishes a crystalline solid from non-crystalline substances like glass. In 1989, Helen became the first woman to be awarded the prestigious Roebling Medal of the Mineralogical Society of America, and in 2000 at the age of 93 she was awarded an honorary degree at Queen‘s University, Belfast. Perhaps, now I can turn to my own involvement with Helen Megaw. I first met her in 1969 while at an international conference in Stony Brook, USA. She was looking for a postdoctoral assistant to work on crystal structure changes with temperature in a particular complicated perovskite material. Kathleen Lonsdale, who had been my Ph.D. supervisor in London, had recommended me to her. At the time I was working at the Chemistry Department in Harvard and my interest was in the crystallography of organic compounds. I therefore accepted Helen‘s offer with some reluctance, because I felt that the subject of inorganic crystals was far too impenetrable for me.
