The existing methods were experiment and theory, closely coupled: without theory, there is no way to systematize and analyze the results of experiments; without experiments there is no point in theorizingtheory becomes philosophy, rather than science. Computational approaches provide a third way, often allowing faster and more elaborate tests of theory than would be possible by experiment, but also allowing a much more sophisticated analysis of experiment than theory alone could provide. In this sense we have a tripod: three legs, which provide a much more stable base than two. This year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry, awarded to Walter Kohn and John Pople, affirms and legitimizes the status of the third leg of that tripod. As scientists working to extend the uses of computational science, we are very pleased that these chemists have been recognized at the highest level for their theoretical and computational contributions in a field whose outstanding contributors have long been laboratory chemists. The work of John Pople and of Walter Kohn provided the foundations for what was then a relatively new approach to research in chemistry. During the last two decades, an increasing number of chemists have turned to the computer to predict the results of experiments before they are performed, or to help interpret the results of experiments. Computer simulations have become an essential item in the researcher's toolbox.

Untangling the mystery of electrons
Walter Kohn John Pople (CNN) For most of the 20th century, scientists have understood that electrons tiny charged particles floating about atoms, which are the building blocks of all matter played a pivotal role in how different chemical compounds reacted to each other. The problem for chemists, however, was in trying to keep track of how all those electrons would behave in any given reaction. That was particularly true when looking at complex molecules, which are made up of many atoms and, thus, even more electrons. The process has been described as trying to model the behavior of a room full of unruly schoolchildren. In 1929, the eminent Nobel laureate Paul Dirac deemed the mathematical equations involved so complex that, he said, no one would ever be able to figure them out. But thanks to Walter Kohn and John Pople , chemists today routinely use computers to track electrons, speeding the development of new drug compounds and allowing astronomers to study the makeup of interstellar matter.

Web posted at: 11:09 a.m. EDT (1509 GMT) STOCKHOLM, Sweden (CNN) Two researchers at American universities, Austrian-born Walter Kohn and John Pople of Britain, won the 1998 Nobel Prize in chemistry on Tuesday. "The laureates have each made pioneering contributions in developing methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved," said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in its award announcement. Kohn and Pople will share the 7.6-million-kronor ($978,000) prize for separate accomplishments. Kohn was cited for development of density-functional theory and Pople for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry. Both Kohn and Pople have been working in the United States for many years.

Development of computational methods in chemistry awarded Researchers have long sought methods for understanding how bonds between the atoms in molecules function. With such methods it would be possible to calculate the properties of molecules and the interplay between them. The growth of quantum mechanics in physics at the beginning of the 1900s opened new possibilities, but applications within chemistry were long in coming. It was not practically possible to handle the complicated mathematical relations of quantum mechanics for such complex systems as molecules.

Pople's work was at the forefront of chemistry and yesterday the Nobel prize jury confirmed their beliefs, naming the emeritus professor one of two winners of this year's chemistry prize. Nobel prize winner John Pople talks with staff at Northwestern University from his son's home in Houston, Texas, after receiving the news of the honor yesterday. (Brett Coomer, Associated Press) Pople, 72, who spent almost three decades in the chemistry department at Carnegie Mellon, shares the prize with a physicist, Walter Kohn of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Kohn, 75, is a native of Austria. Though they never collaborated, Pople and Kohn had tackled different aspects of the same problem using mathematical calculations to predict the properties of molecules. Kohn was mostly interested in understanding the properties of solids, Pople noted yesterday, while he was primarily interested in chemical applications. "At the time he was doing it, the work was understood to be very fundamental," said Guy Berry, a chemistry professor at Carnegie Mellon and a contemporary of Pople. The results were programs that can be run on desktop computers and are standard tools used by thousands of chemists, astrophysicists and other scientists the world over.

Pople Sharing the 1998 Nobel Prize in chemistry are a physicist and a developer of computational codes that made the physicist's concepts more easily applicable to the study of large molecular systems. Walter Kohn, 75, of the University of California at Santa Barbara, and John A. Pople, 72, of Northwestern University, have made pioneering contributions in developing quantum chemistry methods that can be used for theoretical studies of the properties of molecules and the chemical processes in which they are involved. Kohn was cited for the development of the density-functional theory and Pople for the development of computational methods in quantum chemistry. Kohn, a physicist, says of winning the chemistry prize: "You may think they made a mistake, but interdisciplinary acts can be fruitful." Quantum mechanics makes it theoretically possible to understand and calculate how electrons and atomic nuclei interact to build up matter in all its forms. Quantum chemistrythe application of quantum mechanics to chemical problemsexploits this knowledge to describe the molecular system. In the 1960s, two events became decisive: the development of an entirely new theory for describing the spatial distribution of electrons and the use of the increasing potential offered by the computer. Kohn's theoretical work has formed the basis for simplifying the mathematics in descriptions of the bonding of atoms, a prerequisite for many of today's calculations. Pople developed the entire quantum-chemical methodology now used in various branches of chemistry.

Carnegie Mellon University's John Pople Is Winner Of 1992 Wolf Prize In Chemistry

John Anthony Pople, the John Christian Warner University Professor of Natural Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University and an adjunct professor of chemistry at Northwestern University, has been selected to receive Israel's 1992 Wolf Prize in chemistry. The $100,000 prize will be presented to Pople in a May ceremony by the president of Israel. Pople, 66, was recognized for his contributions to theoretical chemistry, particularly his development of widely used quantum-chemical methods. In the mid-1960s, he and colleagues published a series of papers on the approximate self-consistent molecular orbital theory, based on quantum mechanics, which is used to calculate charge distributions and electronic dipole moments in organic molecules (Journal of Chemical Physics, 43:S129, 1965; 43:S136, 1965; 44:3289, 1966; 47:2026, 1967; 49:4643, 1968). The Wolf Foundation citation states that "his work has provided valuable theoretical tools for interpreting molecular spectra and inferring chemical functionality of large molecules. His easily applicable methods, supplied today in neat computer packages, help scientists obtain deep insight into the structure and activities of otherwise bewildering complexity." Ironically, Pople does not have a degree in chemistry; he received his Dr.Ph. in 1951 in mathematics from Cambridge University in his native England. He got into chemistry, he recalls, as "a mathematics student in Cambridge, when I was looking around for a research topic on which to write a thesis." He decided upon the structure of liquid water, a subject on which, "at that time, not a lot was known."
