UNIVERSITY OF BRISTOL
Physicists find a new clue to the origin of the Universe
Scientists at Bristol University are part of an international collaboration of physicists who have discovered a second fundamental difference between the behaviour of matter and antimatter during experiments at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in California, USA. They observed this intriguing phenomenon, known as charge-parity (CP) violation, in disintegrations of heavy, short-lived subatomic particles called B mesons. The collaboration has submitted its result for publication in Physical Review Letters, a leading scientific journal. CP violation could provide a clue as to why our universe, completely made of matter, exists. At the Big Bang, the beginning of our universe, matter and anti-matter were created in equal amounts. Soon afterwards they should have combined to form light particles. The mysterious phenomenon of CP violation was first discovered in a 1964 experiment led by James Cronin and Val Fitch at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA. Their group observed this behaviour in decays of subatomic particles called K mesons, which are about one tenth as heavy as B mesons and live much longer. The two physicists shared a Nobel Prize for the discovery. Several observations of CP violation have occurred since in experiments with K mesons. But until this new discovery, no other subatomic particles had clearly exhibited this exceedingly rare phenomenon. The discovery of this second striking example of CP violation should aid theorists trying to understand what causes it.

History of the University
The University College of Bristol opened in 1876, after six years of discussions and controversy, in a bid to bring university culture to the provinces. It was the first college in the country to admit men and women on an equal footing. Resources were scarce and support was greatest among local nonconformists like the Fry and Wills families (who made their fortunes in chocolate and tobacco, respectively). After much lobbying, government grants for the University College began in 1889, and in 1893 a Medical School and an Engineering School were opened. In 1908, gifts from the Wills and Fry families enabled the College to apply for a charter, and in 1909 the King and Privy Seal approved the creation of the University of Bristol. H O Wills became its first chancellor, his tenure cut short by his death in 1911. His sons, George and Harry Wills, funded the magnificent Wills Memorial Building, opened by King George V and Queen Mary in 1925. This is still the centrepiece of the University precinct. home about this site terms and conditions feedback University of Bristol Senate House

Cosmic ray research in Poland dates back to 1930's. At that time in Kraków a system of Geiger-Mueller counters was built under the guidance of professor Marian Miesowicz and used as cosmic ray detectors. The studies of cosmic rays continue until now. In 1937 it was decided to organize a stratospheric balloon flight in Poland. The launch site was to be the Chocholowska Valley in the Tatra mountains. After long preparations the detectors were mounted in the balloon gondola and the balloon was filled with hydrogen. However the balloon ignited and burned, so that the flight never took place. Shortly after this event professor Pierre Auger from Paris - the discoverer of extensive air showers - visited Kraków. He was interested in the Wieliczka salt mine as an ideal place to study extensive air showers filtered by a thick layer of ground. He proposed to Kraków physicists a joint research on air showers. This research began, but soon got interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. In 1946 Prof. Jan Weyssenhoff, professor of the Jagellonian Uniwersity invited the Cosmic Ray Commission of the Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) to convene a conference on cosmic rays and he offered to organize it. The conference took place in 1947 in Kraków and started the series of the International Cosmic Ray Conferences (ICRC) which now are organized around the world on a biennial basis.
