I was born on July 23rd, 1906 in Sarajevo in the province of Bosnia, which then belonged to the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy and later, in 1918, became part of Yugoslavia. In the western world my birthplace has a somewhat sinister reputation that was characterized by an older tax-inspector in the Midwest of America as "the place where all that mess started". Actually, as an 8 years old boy I stood near to the spot where Archiduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated. At the beginning of the first World War, in 1915, we moved to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, where I attended the gymnasium. The period 1924 to 1929 was spent studying Chemistry at the Czech Institute of Technology in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The supervisor of my thesis was Professor Emil Votocek, one of the prominent founders of chemical research in Czechoslovakia. My mentor, however, was Rudolf Lukes, then lecturer and later successor of Votocek to the chair of organic chemistry. To Lukes I owe the greatest part of my early scientific education, and he remained my close friend until his premature death in 1960. In addition to these two "real" teachers I admired Robert Robinson , Christopher Ingold and

Nobel Prize for Chemistry with John W. Cornforth for his work on the stereochemistry of organic molecules and reactions. (Stereochemistry is the study of the three-dimensional arrangements of atoms within molecules.) Prelog performed wide-ranging research on the stereochemistry of alkaloids, antibiotics, enzymes, and other natural compounds. In particular he contributed to the understanding of stereoisomerism, in which two compounds of identical chemical composition have different, mirror-image configurations (like a person's right and left hands). With Robert Cahn and Sir Christopher Ingold, he developed a nomenclature for describing complex organic compounds. This system, known as CIP, provided a standard and international language for precisely specifying a compound's structure.

(in conjunction with J.W. Cornforth, Australia/UK)
Vladimir Prelog is the author of the current system of nomenclature for spatial molecular configurations. In the 1950s he was fascinated by chiral molecules; the word chiral is derived from the Creek cheir (hand). Like our right and left hands, these molecules exist in two identical but not congruent forms. Prelog introduced the designations "R" (from the Latin rectus, or right) and "S" (from the Latin sinister, or left) to distinguish the two configurations. He also developed a method for predicting the spatial arrangement of organic molecules, such as alcohol, before they are synthesized in the laboratory. Vladimir Prelog was born in 1906 in Sarajevo, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He studied at the Institute Technical School in Prague. After receiving a doctorate in Prague and working at the universities in Prague and Zagreb for several years as an assistant, he moved to Zurich in the early 1940S at the invitation of Leopold Ruzicka, a professor at the Federal Institute of Technology and the 1939 winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. In 1950 he was appointed professor, and seven years later followed Ruzicka in heading the Institute of Organic Chemistry.

Professor Vladimir Prelog (1906-1998 ) Professor Vladimir Prelog, the 1975 Nobel Prize winner for chemistry, was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia, a province at that time of the Austria-Hungary Monarchy. In his memoirs he once recalled that as, an eight-year-old boy, he had stood close to where Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated in 1914. After completing his secondary education in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, Prelog came to study at the Institute of Chemical Technology Engineering in Prague in 1924, and took his degree in 1928. In 1929, he received his doctorate based on his dissertation, which was supervised by Professor Emil Votocek. Due to the economic crisis he could not find an academic position and worked as head of a chemical laboratory in Prague in which rare chemicals were produced on a small scale. In 1935 he accepted a post as lecturer at the University of Zagreb where he later became a Professor. After the German occupation of Zagreb in 1941, Professor Prelog left for Switzerland to start work in the Organic Chemistry Laboratory at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. He began as an assistant, and gained a full professorship in 1952. In 1957 he became the head of this outstanding Laboratory, funded by CIBA. Professor Prelog's life-long interest was in the structure of natural compounds. This brought him to stereochemistry, which he perceived not so much as a branch of chemistry but rather as a new way of looking at chemistry.

Prelog was educated in Prague. There he received his diploma in chemical engineering (1928) and his doctorate (1929). After his professorship at the University of Zagreb (1935-1941) he emigrated to Switzerland, were he was appointed professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). Natural products became one of the two main interests of his career, the other being stereochemistry. For this research he was awarded a share of the Nobel Prize for 1975. Prelog, Vladimir Bosnian-born Swiss organic chemist who studied alkaloids and antibiotics. The comprehensive molecular topology that evolved from his work on stereochemistry is gradually replacing classical stereochemistry. He shared a Nobel prize 1975.
Alkaloids were the subject of Prelog's early research, and he derived the structures of quinine, strychnine, and steroid alkaloids from plants of the genera Solanum and Veratrum. His studies of lipoid extracts from animal organs also resulted in the discovery of various steroids and the elucidation of their structures. He investigated metabolic products of microorganisms and with a number of other researchers isolated various new complex natural products that have interesting biological properties. These include antibiotics and bacterial growth factors.
