Obituary
Physical sciences Aleksandr Prokhorov
Russian Nobel scientist who turned the laser into practical reality
Pearce Wright
Friday January 11, 2002
The Guardian

The laser is such a commonplace component in domestic, industrial and scientific equipment that it is easy to forget that, for the first 10 years of its existence, it was regarded as a brilliant invention with little practical use. Its potential was only beginning to emerge in 1964, when Aleksandr Prokhorov, the Russian physicist who has died aged 85, shared the Nobel prize in physics for its discovery. Prokhorov was regarded as a politically controversial figure by the west. In 1982, he was among 97 Nobel laureates who called for a freeze on the development of nuclear weapons, but later lent his name to what was seen as a Soviet propaganda campaign.

Emergence of Modern Science The Discovery of the Electron V.B.Kamble A s early as about 1830, electrical discharges in gases were intriguing a number of experimental physicists in Europe. In 1881, at the Cavendish Laboratory at the University of Cambridge, J.J.Thomson began experimenting with gaseous discharges, and continued to do so for the next 50 years. When Thomson started his research, cathode rays had already been known for about 50 years, but their nature was controversial. As Thomson later wrote in the paper reporting his discovery of the electron, "The most diverse opinions are held as to these rays; according to the almost unanimous opinion of German physicists they are due to some process in the ether to which. no phenomenon hitherto observed is analogous; another view of these rays is that, so far from being wholly ethereal, they are in fact wholly material, and that they mark the paths of particles of matter charged with negative electricity." J.J. Thomson

Below is a list of Nobel Laureates, starting with the most recent, that were either Russian or Soviet citizens at the time of their award. There is also a large number of Laureates that were born in Russia or the USSR but had relocated, either as children or far into their careers, to other countries at the time of their award. We have attempted to list the country correctly - Russia or the USSR - depending on the status of the country at the time of the laureate's birth and/or award.
