A Song of Peace
Let the sun rise the morning give its light The purest of prayers will not bring us back
He whose candle was snuffed out and was buried in the dust bitter cry won`t wake him up and won`t bring him back
Nobody will bring us back from a dead and darkened pit here, neither the victory cheer nor songs of praise will help
Just sing a song for peace do not whisper a prayer Just sing a song for peace in a loud shout
Allow the sun to penetrate through the flowers don`t look back let go of those departed
Lift your eyes with hope not through the rifle`s sights sing a song for love and not for wars
Don`t say the day will come bring on that day because it is not a dream and in all the city squares cheer for PEACE

Yitzhak Rabin was born in Jerusalem in 1922; he studied at the Kadoorie Agricultural College where he graduated with distinction. His military career began in 1940 when he joined the "Palmach", the elite unit of the Haganah. During the War of Independence (1948-1949), he commanded the Harel Brigade, deployed on the Jerusalem front. For the next 20 years, he served with the IDF as O.C. Northern Command (1956-1959); as Chief of Operations and Deputy Chief of Staff (1959-1964) and as Chief of Staff (1964-1968), commanding the IDF during the Six-Day War. On January 1, 1968, he retired from military service and shortly afterwards was appointed ambassador to the United States. During his years as ambassador in Washington, he promoted and consolidated the ties between the two countries. In the spring of 1973, Rabin returned to Israel and became active in the Labour Party. He was elected Member of the Knesset in December 1973 and when Golda Meir formed her government in April 1974, was appointed Minister of Labour. On June 2, 1974, the Knesset expressed confidence in a new government headed by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

(Check against delivery) Your Majesties,

President Ahtisaari,
Prime Minister Barak,
Prime Minister Putin,
President Arafat,
Your Excellencies,
Distinguished Guests, The bullet took his life, deprived his family of a beloved husband and father, and bereaved Israel of one of its great sons. But it did not reach the other target at which it was aimed. The peace process lives on. The destiny of a nation is shaped by ideas, technological advances and social change. But sometimes its destiny can be moulded by the vision and courage of an individual. Yitzhak Rabin was one such individual. He demonstrated the difference one human being, one politician, can make to the course of history. These are words of wisdom. But at the same time, that first breakthrough was an achievement in its own right, and one to which he made a vital contribution. But it was a first achievement - not the crowning achievement. That still lies ahead.

Examples Yitzhak Rabin was one of Israel's most important statesmen. A soldier for 27 years, he found his way into politics. Regarded by many as a war hero, he managed to reinvent himself as a symbolic figure for the Middle East peace process on taking office as Israel's prime minister for the second time. Working together with his Foreign Minister, Shimon Peres, he fought for peace and came into contact with states and politicians against whom he had fought numerous wars. The historic handshake between Yitzhak Rabin and Yassir Arafat in front of the White House in Washington marked the beginning of the peace process. All three of these men - Rabin, Peres and Arafat - were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994. Life and work : This comprehensive text details the development of Rabin from young soldier to the statesman, who would provide decisive impetus to the peace process. Quotes and speeches : We have chosen three of Rabin's most important speeches: His last speech, the Nobel Prize speech in 1994 and the speech he made after the signing of the first agreement between Israel and the Palestinians in 1993.
