4. Lord Rayleigh - Biography
john william strutt, third Baron rayleigh, was born on November Essex, as the sonof john James strutt lord rayleigh, a former Chancellor of Cambridge University
http://www.nobel.se/physics/laureates/1904/strutt-bio.html
John William Strutt , third Baron Rayleigh, was born on November 12, 1842 at Langford Grove, Maldon, Essex, as the son of John James Strutt, second Baron, and his wife Clara Elizabeth La Touche, eldest daughter of Captain Richard Vicars, R. E. He was one of the very few members of higher nobility who won fame as an outstanding scientist.
Throughout his infancy and youth he was of frail physique; his education was repeatedly interrupted by ill-health, and his prospects of attaining maturity appeared precarious. After a short spell at Eton at the age of 10, mainly spent in the school sanatorium, three years in a private school at Wimbledon, and another short stay at Harrow, he finally spent four years with the Rev. George Townsend Warner (1857) who took pupils at Torquay.
In 1861 he entered Trinity College Cambridge , where he commenced reading mathematics, not at first equal in attainments to the best of his contemporaries, but his exceptional abilities soon enabled him to overtake his competitors. He graduated in the Mathematical Tripos in 1865 as Senior Wrangler and Smith's Prizeman. In 1866 he obtained a fellowship at Trinity which he held until 1871, the year of his marriage.
A severe attack of rheumatic fever in 1872 made him spend the winter in Egypt and Greece. Shortly after his return his father died (1873) and he succeeded to the barony, taking up residence in the family seat, Terling Place, at Witham, Essex. He now found himself compelled to devote part of his time to the management of his estates (7000 acres). The combination of general scientific knowledge and acumen with acquired knowledge of agriculture made his practice in estate management in many respects in advance of his time. Nevertheless, in 1876 he left the entire management of the land to his younger brother.

June 30, 1919, Terling Place, Witham, Essex), English physical scientist who made fundamental discoveries in the fields of acoustics and optics that are basic to the theory of wave propagation in fluids. He received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1904 for his successful isolation of argon , an inert atmospheric gas. Strutt suffered from poor health throughout his childhood and youth, and it was necessary for him to be withdrawn from both Eton and Harrow. In 1857 he began four years of private study under a tutor. In 1861 Strutt entered Trinity College, Cambridge, from which he was graduated with a B.A. in 1865. He early developed an absorbing interest in both the experimental and mathematical sides of physical science, and in 1868 he purchased an outfit of scientific apparatus for independent research. In his first paper, published in 1869, he gave a lucid exposition of some aspects of the electromagnetic theory of James Clerk Maxwell, the Scottish physicist, in terms of analogies that the average man would understand. An attack of rheumatic fever shortly after his marriage in 1871 threatened his life for a time. A recuperative trip to Egypt was suggested, and Strutt took his bride, Evelyn Balfour, the sister of Arthur James Balfour, on a houseboat journey up the Nile for an extended winter holiday. On this excursion he began work on his great book

He studied at Cambridge, and was elected a fellow of Trinity College in 1866. He succeeded his father as third baron in 1873. He became professor of experimental physics at Cambridge (1879-84), professor of natural philosophy at the Royal Institution, London (18881905), and president of the Royal Society (1905-08). His work included valuable studies and research on vibratory motion, the theory of sound, and the wave theory of light (Rayleigh scattering). With Sir William Ramsay he was the discoverer of argon (1894). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1904, and became Chancellor of Cambridge University in 1908.

    Rayleigh, Lord John William Strutt
English physicist who wrote the standard treatise The Theory of Sound (1877-78), experimented in optics and microscopy, and, with William Ramsay, discovered argon. Nobel prize 1904.
Rayleigh was born in Essex and studied at Cambridge. He set up a laboratory at his home and was professor of experimental physics at Cambridge 1879-84, making the Cavendish Laboratory an important research centre.
In 1871, Rayleigh explained that the blue colour of the sky arises from the scattering of light by dust particles in the air, and was able to relate the degree of scattering to the wavelength of the light. He also made the first accurate definition of the resolving power of diffraction gratings, which led to improvements in the spectroscope. He completed in 1884 the standardization of the three basic electrical units: the ohm, ampere, and volt. His insistence on accuracy prompted the designing of more precise electrical instruments.
After leaving Cambridge, Rayleigh continued to do research in a broad range of subjects including light and sound radiation, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, and mechanics.

    http://www.chemheritage.org/EducationalServices/chemach/ppt/wr.html

William Ramsay is known for work that established a whole new group in the periodic table—variously called over time inert, rare, or noble gases. In the last decade of the nineteenth century he and the famous physicist Lord Rayleigh (John William Strutt, 1842-1919)—already known for his work on sound, light, and other electromagnetic radiation—carried out separate investigations, for which they received Nobel Prizes in 1904, Ramsay in chemistry and Lord Rayleigh in physics. Ramsay began his studies in his native city of Glasgow and completed a doctorate in chemistry at Tübingen, focusing on organic chemistry. On his return to Great Britain and his appointment to academic posts at the University of Bristol and then at University College, London, he became known for the inventiveness and scrupulousness of his experimental techniques, especially for his methods for determining the molecular weights of substances in the liquid state. In 1892 Ramsay's curiosity was piqued by Lord Rayleigh's observation that the density of nitrogen extracted from the air was always greater than nitrogen released from various chemical compounds. Ramsay then set about looking for an unknown gas in air of greater density, which—when he found it—he named argon. While investigating for the presence of argon in a uranium-bearing mineral, he instead discovered helium, which since 1868 had been known to exist, but only in the sun. This second discovery led him to suggest the existence of a new group of elements in the periodic table. He and his coworkers quickly isolated neon, krypton, and xenon from the earth's atmosphere.
