Alumnus participated in physics experiment that led to Nobel Prize
A Washington University alumnus, the late Clyde L. Cowan Jr., participated in a critical experiment for which the 1995 Nobel Prize in physics was awarded earlier this month. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the $1 million physics prize jointly to Martin L. Perl of Stanford University and Frederick Reines of the University of California at Irvine. Perl and Reines shared the prize for their unrelated experiments in which they discovered two different subatomic particles. Cowan, who received a doctorate in physics from Washington University in 1949, collaborated with Reines in the 1950s at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Together, Cowan and Reines demonstrated in 1956 the existence of a subatomic particle, the neutrino. The existence of neutrinos had been theoretically predicted about 20 years earlier. Despite its fundamental importance to the study of cosmology, the mechanisms of energy generation in the stars and the structure of elementary particles, the neutrino was believed to be undetectable. Although the Nobel Committee does not make posthumous awards, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences did give Cowan equal credit for what it referred to as the "neutrino breakthrough." In its official statement, the academy said, "Reines and Cowan succeeded in a feat considered to border on the impossible. They had raised the neutrino from its status as a figure of the imagination to an existence as a free particle."

Martin Perl Wins Nobel Prize in Physics
Stanford Linear Accelerator Center - Martin Perl, a professor at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), has been awarded the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics. He will be presented the award in Stockholm, Sweden this December for his 1975 discovery of a new elementary particle known as the tau lepton
Perl, 68, received the news of his selection at home in San Francisco when he received a call from the Associated Press. "I still can't believe it," said Perl. "At first I thought that someone had made a mistake." "All of us at Stanford are elated at the news, said Burton Richter, recipient of the 1976 Nobel Prize for physics and director of SLAC. "Perl's discovery came as a complete surprise to the physics world. This is a well-deserved award." The tau lepton is a superheavy cousin of the electron the carrier of electrical current in household appliances. The two particles are identical in all respects except that the tau is more than 3,500 times heavier than the electron and survives less than a trillionth of a second, whereas the electron is stable.

Etymology
Frederick is the modern English of an Old Germanic name, Frithuric
History
Although the Anglo-Saxons had their own form of the name, Freodheric , it was rare. The Normans carried it with them when they invaded in 1066, but it died out soon after. Frederick , did, however, remain popular in Continental Europe, especially among the German princes. The name was reintroduced to England when the German royal family of Hanover gained the English throne in 1714.
Fredrik , the Swedish form, first appeared in the 14th century, but did not become common until the 18th.

Obituaries Alan Wetherell 19321998
CERN senior research physicist Alan Wetherell died on 13 September. After studies at Liverpool and a period at Caltech, he came to CERN in 1959, going on to participate in a series of experiments at the then new Proton Synchrotron.
After work at Serpukhov in the late 60s and at CERN's Intersecting Storage Rings in the early 70s, he became head of this group when Giuseppe Cocconi became a CERN Director. The group shifted to weak interactions and joined with Klaus Winter for the CHARM (CERN/Hamburg/Amsterdam/Rome/Moscow) experiment.
He was appointed Leader of CERN's Experimental Physics Division in 1981, and served for three-and-a-half years. Subsequently he joined Ugo Amaldi and Jim Allaby in the Delphi collaboration at LEP, eventually taking responsibility for the hadron calorimeter which was built under his guidance by a Russian team.
In 1971 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). He was also a visiting professor at Liverpool. He formally retired from CERN in December 1997. Frederick Reines 19181998

Cowan and Reines Neutrino Experiment
From the study of beta decay like the decay of the neutron , it was evident in the 1930's that a third particle must be present. But since that particle, named the neutrino , had no charge and almost no mass, it was difficult to detect. In the mid 1950's, Frederick Reines and Clyde L. Cowan, Jr. came up with an experiment to verify the existence of the neutrino. It made use of the fact that nuclear reactors were expected to produce neutrino fluxes on the order of 10 neutrinos per second per cm , far higher than any attainable flux from radioactive sources. Neutron decay and other beta decay events produce electron antineutrinos. Those antineutrinos should interact with protons to produce neutrons and positrons. The positrons quickly find electrons and produce two gamma rays by pair-annihilation , a very distinctive event in that you can simultaneously detect the two 0.5 MeV gammas in opposite directions. But Reines and Cowan realized that the coincident detection of the pair annihilation gammas was not quite proof of neutrino detection by this reaction. They arranged to detect the neutron from the reaction as well to confirm the occurrence of this reaction. The gamma photons were detected by putting a scintillator material in a tank of water. The scintillator produced flashes of visible light in response to the gamma photons, and that light was detected by photomultiplier tubes. The neutrons were detected by putting cadmium chloride into the detector tank. Cadmium is a strong neutron absorber and finds use in

Russian Economy Weakens as Does Yeltsin's Grip on Presidency
THe Los Angeles Times
Moscow President Boris N. Yeltsin, increasingly isolated and under pressure to resign, remained secluded Thursday at his rural estate as the Russian stock market plunged to a record low and government negotiators hammered out a power-sharing agreement designed to reduce his authority. Longtime Yeltsin supporters said the president is now so politically weakened that he may be unable to survive the collapse of the ruble, the fall of the stock market and the economic chaos that grips the country. "Yeltsin was never such a weak player as he is these days," said Vyacheslav Nikonov, a former presidential adviser. "Yeltsin is not in public view. It raises the question of who is in charge." Nikonov and others said part of the proposed power-sharing pact with parliament is an agreement to grant Yeltsin immunity from future legal action against him and to ensure the financial security of his family - measures designed to protect him if he resigns. The Kremlin denied reports that Yeltsin, tenacious but ailing, would quit. But that did nothing to halt speculation that the 67-year-old president is likely to resign before year's end, prompting new presidential elections early next year.

Discoveries of two of nature's sub-atomic particles rewarded
Mankind seeks his place in nature. He endeavours to find answers to philosophical and physical questions alike. The home of mankind, the Universe, was created in a Big Bang. "What does this Universe consist of?" - "What are the smallest constituents of the Universe and what are their properties?" - "What can they tell us of the history of the Universe and of its future?" etc. This year's laureates have in this search made lasting contributions: They have discovered two of nature's most remarkable subatomic particles.
