French novelist, dramatist, essayist, mystic, and pacifist, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915. Rolland had a strong sense of social responsibility - he saw that art must be a part of the struggle to bring enlightenment to people. "In politics, he has always been a republican with advanced Socialist sympathies, and internationalist at heart, and, as they said in the eighteenth century, a 'citizen of the world.' He has always fought social injustice. In art, he loves, above all, Beethoven, Shakespeare, and Goethe... Rembrandt is the painter dearest to him. But his chosen country is Italy."
(Rolland on himself, World Authors 1900-1950, vol. 3, ed. by Martin Seymour-Smith and Andrew C. Kimmens, 1996)

    Rolland, Romain 1866-1944, French novelist, biographer, playwright, and musicologist. After studying in Paris he spent two crucial years in Rome, where he was influenced by German intellectuals. He wrote biographies of Beethoven (1903, tr. 1909), Michelangelo (1905, tr. 1915), Tolstoy (1911, tr. 1911), and Mahatma Gandhi (1924, tr. 1924). His 10-volume novel Jean-Christophe (1904-12, tr. 1910-13), established his reputation in the literary world. An example of the roman-fleuve, or continuous series of novels, it is a fictional biography of a German-born musician and a study of contemporary French and German civilization. Rolland was awarded the 1915 Nobel Prize in Literature. His genuine pacifistic philosophy and the courage of his convictions, reflected in Above the Battle (1915, tr. 1916), led to self-imposed exile in Switzerland, where he remained until 1938. Among his other works are the play The Wolves (1898, tr. 1937), inspired by the Dreyfus Affair; the seven-volume novel

    Jean-Christophe
    • Quand rien n'entrave l'action, l'âme a bien moins de raison pour agir...Quand le temps est compté et les paroles mesurées, on ne dit rien de trop et on prend l'habitude de ne penser que l'essentiel. Ainsi on vit double, ayant moins de temps à vivre.
    • Christophe n'avait pas tord de croire que le devoir est exceptionnel. Mais l'amour ne l'est pas moins. Tout est exceptionnel. Tout ce qui vaut quelque chose n'a pas de pire ennemi, - non pas ce qui est mal (les vices ont leur prix) - mais ce qui est habituel. L'ennemi mortel de l'âme c'est l'usure des jours.
    • Un héros, c'est celui qui fait ce qu'il peut. Les autres ne le font pas.
    • Par toute son éducation, par tout ce qu'il voit autour de lui, l'enfant absorbe une telle somme de mensonges et de sottises mélangées aux vérités essentielles de la vie que le premier devoir de l'adolescence qui veut être un homme sain est de tout dégorger.
    • Il faut aimer la vérité plus que soi-même, mais son prochain plus que la vérité;

    T he Ironic Inflation of Chinese National Character: Lu Xun's International Reputation, Romain Rolland's Critique of 'The True Story of Ah Q,' and the Nobel Prize This paper examines the irony that the "international" fame of both "The True Story of Ah Q" ( A Q zhengzhuan Mangyuan (Wilderness). Though he may have been the strongest critic of national character, Lu Xun could not stand outside the national character discourse, but was subject to it himself. The trajectory of Rolland's praise appears to have ultimately resulted in the suggestion that Lu Xun be nominated for the Nobel Prize for literature. Although "The True Story of Ah Q" was a negative depiction of the Chinese national character, the discourse of national character led to its valorization as a "positive" example of modern Chinese literature and exalted Lu Xun as an exemplar of Chinese national character in the Chinese imagination-a Nobel Prize contender.
