Domestic Policy
Roosevelt's inexhaustible vitality and enthusiasm, aided by his ability to dramatize himself and to coin vivid phrases, made him a popular president. His intellectual interests did much to elevate the tone of American politics. On the other hand, he drew considerable criticism for his glorification of military strength and his patriotic fervor. He recognized, from the outset of his first administration, the growing demand for reform that was expressed in the writings of the muckrakers Sherman Antitrust Act , ordered the successful antitrust suit against the Northern Securities Company, and led the attack on a number of other large trusts. Altogether, his administration began some 40 suits against trusts. Roosevelt's threat to intervene in the anthracite coal strike of 1902 induced the operators to accept arbitration. In his second administration Roosevelt directed the passage (1906) of the Hepburn Act, which revitalized the Interstate Commerce Commission

If the sculptor Gutzon Borglum had a hero of his own, it was 26th President Theodore Roosevelt, who promoted construction of the Panama Canal and ignited progressive causes such as conservation and business reform: "We, here in America, hold in our hands the hopes of the world, the fate of the coming years; and shame and disgrace will be ours if in our eyes the light of high resolve is dimmed, if we trail in the dust the golden hopes of men" (Address at Carnegie Hall, March 30, 1912).

The Early Years
Theodore Roosevelt was born in New York City. Roosevelt was a sickly child who suffered from asthma. He developed an early interest in wildlife, and as a child hoped to become a zoologist. He traveled extensively with his family and as he was too sick as a child to go to school, he was taught by private tutors. In 1875, at the age of 17, Teddy Roosevelt took and passed the Harvard entrance exam. He began his studies the next year. A year after graduating from Harvard and beginning Columbia Law School, Roosevelt left school to run for the New York State Senate. He won and served for two years. After this, Roosevelt worked as a cattle rancher in the Dakota Territory for two years and was for a short period a Deputy Sheriff of Billings County. From 1889 to 1895 Roosevelt served on the Commission of the US Civil Service. He vigorously worked to insure strict enforcement of the Civil Service laws. From 1895-1897, Roosevelt served as President of the New York City Police Board. From 1897 to 1898 Roosevelt served as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. He was a strong supporter of the war with Spain. When the war began, Roosevelt resigned his post to become Commander of the US Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, otherwise known as the "Rough Riders." He led a charge up San Juan hill and became famous throughout America.

Commission Appointed, Major Collection of TR Memorabilia Acquired by State Library Gov. George E. Pataki today announced the appointment of a group of Roosevelt scholars and state officials to a Temporary Commission to Commemorate the Centennial of the Governorship of Theodore Roosevelt . This year (1999) marks the centennial of Theodore Roosevelt's election as the 33rd governor of New York State. The commission will sponsor commemorative events, exhibits and educational projects in cooperation with federal, state and local agencies; non-profit and educational organizations; and interested citizens. "A century ago, Theodore Roosevelt helped popularize the conservation movement in New York and across the nation," Gov. Pataki said. "TR taught New Yorkers – and the world – that conserving and protecting our natural resources is essential to preserving and improving the quality of life we enjoy in this great country. He was an environmental visionary who inspired many. That's why his portrait hangs in my office in the Capitol. "In the early days of this century, TR helped define the conservation ethic that guides us today. At the dawn of another century, it is fitting that we honor the achievements of this remarkable New Yorker. I have established a Temporary Commission to commemorate TR's governorship because I believe that New Yorkers today still have much to learn from TR's legacy," the governor said.

That determination propelled his larger-than-life successes "I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about what I think of what I do. That is character!" said the sportsman with a reputation for action. "Like all Americans I like things big; big prairies, big forests, big factories, and everything else." In 1898, heroic Roosevelt led the Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War and was elected Governor of New York. He was elected Vice President two years later and in 1901, following the assassination of William McKinley , Roosevelt, 43, became the youngest President in history. President Theodore Roosevelt was honored with the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1906. He was the first American to receive any Nobel Prize. , I hear you ask. It seems so hypocritical. After all, he eagerly, even joyfully resigned his position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy in order to fight in the Spanish American War! That War had been deliberately provoked by the United States in order to drive the Spanish from Cuba. Roosevelt was well aware of that fact. The United States did very well from that War, acquiring the Philippines, the islands of Guam, Wake, and Puerto Rico as well as a protectorate over Cuba. It also inherited the headaches of the Imperial conqueror. The Philippines insurrection following the conclusion of the Spanish American War was one of them. It had to be put down by the successors to the Spanish oppressors, the Americans, with a great deal of bloodshed. Theodore Roosevelt was Vice President of the United States when this was occurring. He inherited the problem when he became President in 1901. So, with a reputation like his why would anyone want to honor him as a

The Man

Theodore Roosevelt, the second of four children, was born on Oct. 27, 1858, in New York City. As a child, he struggled against frailty, nearsightedness and asthma. His love for reading helped foster a love for nature and the outdoors. He also exercised vigorously and developed a lifelong interest in what he called "the strenuous life". He entered Harvard at 18 with the intent of becoming a naturalist. As a senior he began work on a book, "The Naval War of 1812." TR graduated 21st in a class of 177 in 1880 and married Alice Hathaway Lee. After graduation, at the age of 22, Roosevelt joined New York City's 21 District Republican Club and was elected to the New York Assembly. TR's mother died of typhoid in February 1884, and his wife died later the same day of Bright's disease (a kidney ailment) while giving birth to their daughter, Alice. TR left New York to regain his strength and confidence at the Elkhorn Ranch in the North Dakota Badlands. Returning to NYC in 1886, TR ran unsuccessfully for mayor. That year, he married Edith Kermit Carow, who would bear him five children. Political service to Benjamin Harrison won TR a seat on the Civil Service Commission in 1889. He gained national attention by staging a fight against favoritism. TR's position: Jobs should go to the most qualified applicants.
