THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Theodore Roosevelt (October 27,1858-January 6, 1919) was born in New York into one of the old Dutch families which had settled in America in the seventeenth century. At eighteen he entered Harvard College and spent four years there, dividing his time between books and sport and excelling at both. After leaving Harvard he studied in Germany for almost a year and then immediately entered politics. He was elected to the Assembly of New York State, holding office for three years and distinguishing himself as an ardent reformer.
In 1884, because of ill health and the death of his wife, Roosevelt abandoned his political work for some time. He invested part of the fortune he had inherited from his father in a cattle ranch in Wyoming, expecting to remain in the West for many years. He became a passionate hunter, especially of big game, and an ardent believer in the wild outdoor life which brought him health and strength. In 1886 Roosevelt returned to New York, married again, and once more plunged into politics.
President Harrison
, after his election in 1889, appointed Roosevelt as a member of the Civil Service Commission of which he later became president. This office he retained until 1895 when he undertook the direction of the Police Department of New York City. In 1897 he joined

Theodore Roosevelt was more than just the 26th president of the United States. He was a writer, historian, explorer, big-game hunter, soldier, conservationist, ranchman and Nobel Peace Prize winner. It is not surprising that his philosophy of life was known as The Strenuous Life
Theodore was born into a wealthy and socially prominent New York family in 1858. Although blessed with a quick mind he was not blessed with a strong body. He suffered from life-threatening asthma attacks throughout his childhood. Spurred on by his father, Theodore began to build up his body by strenuous exercise, and by adulthood he had become a model of physical courage and toughness. This early example of his character was indicative of the way he lived the rest of his life. He did not back down in the face of adversity, and he continually displayed remarkable physical and moral courage.
Early Political Life
As a young man Roosevelt decided on a dual career; law and politics. At the time, New York politics was dominated by men involved in machine politics. These were not exactly the kind of people he had met at Harvard. Yet he persisted in getting to know and understand them, while at the same time attending Columbia Law School. Eventually he secured the friendship and patronage of an influential man named Joe Murray who was able to get him nominated as a 21st District State Republican Assemblyman. Together, with Murray's contacts and knowledge of machine politics and his own family and social connections, Roosevelt was able to easily win the election. He was 23 and in Albany.

He was a hunter, wrestler, a polo player, a boxer, a swimmer, a mountain climber, an explorer, a rancher, a soldier, a student of history, and a writer. Teddy married Alice Lee in 1880 but she died two days after the birth of a daughter in 1884. In 1886, Teddy married a childhood friend named Edith Carow and had five more children. Teddy Roosevelt made playing with his children an important part of his, and their, life. They were a very lively family. Teddy gave his children a pony. When his son Archie had the measles, his brothers Quentin and Kermit brought the pony upstairs in the White House elevator for a visit.

Reading 3: The Bully Pulpit
When Roosevelt began his presidency in September 1901, he faced an administration he did not choose and policies with which he did not necessarily agree. He asked McKinley's Cabinet to remain in office under his administration, but within a year several of it members had resigned. Despite changes in the Cabinet, Roosevelt did not demonstrate how different his policies would be from those of his predecessor until the following year when a national crisis arose over a coal strike. Roosevelt also preached the message that all Americans, regardless of race, ethnicity or religion, had the right to an education and to gainful employment. Roosevelt, who had suffered health problems as a child, felt a special bond with children. As the father of six, he knew the importance of providing a healthy childhood and a good education. He was frustrated that he could not change the child labor laws himself. However, his outspoken and public stand on many issues helped initiate later efforts to change the laws concerning women's rights, African Americans' civil rights, and child labor. Unfortunately, Roosevelt did not live to see most of the changes he rallied for enacted into law. Questions for Reading 3 What is meant by the phrase "status quo"? List some examples of how Roosevelt challenged the status quo.

Referred to by the Roosevelt family as the hall, or occasionally front or main hall, this space served as a sitting room, an entrance hall and passageway to the first floor rooms and main staircase (beyond the right edge of the photo). The sitting room function, shared with the library, was abandoned with the opening of the north room (far center in photo) in 1905. One author commented that: "The dark entrance hall of Sagamore Hill... was...not arranged for comfort" and seemed to inexorably draw a visitor to one of the several rooms that opened from it. Along the main staircase, a back hallway led to the service wing of the house. Originally, the north end of the hall opened onto the porch at the location of the grandfather clock (at the left). When the north room was built in 1905, the hall was extended to connect with the new room. Doors to the right and left in the new section of the hall led to the dining room and the porch/piazza. This 1904 photograph shows the west side of the hall, almost looking back to the front door. The only seats visible are a cushioned, straight-backed settee and one low-backed armchair, which suggests that by this date the sitting room function had already been -pretty much abandoned. The animal heads in 1904 were of American origin; in the 1918 photograph above, the visible trophies were from the 1910 African expedition: the elephant's tusk chimes and elephant's foot gong. Oriental rugs present in 1904 were present through 1948. By the time of Mrs. Roosevelt's death in 1948, much of the clutter was gone, though several objects were still there from as far back as 1904.

The reconstructed house contains five period rooms, two museum galleries and a bookstore. Teedie, as young Roosevelt was nicknamed, was a sickly but bright boy, from a wealthy family. To improve his health, Teedie began an exercise program at the house’s outdoor gymnasium that started a lifelong passion for the “strenuous life.” After graduating from Harvard, Roosevelt pursued his boyhood dreams, as a rancher, naturalist, explorer, author and Colonel of the Rough Riders. His political service included reforming the U.S. Civil Service Commission and New York City Police Department, and terms as Governor of New York and Vice President of the U.S. Theodore Roosevelt became president when William McKinley was assassinated in September 1901. As President, Roosevelt pushed progressive reforms, such as conservation of public lands and trust busting, and negotiated an end to the war between Russia and Japan, for which he won a Nobel Peace Prize.

Theodore Roosevelt
First as a popular writer, and later as President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt exercised a profound influence on the history of the American West, earning his place among the presidential giants portrayed on Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota. Born on October 27, 1858, in New York City, Roosevelt grew up in a wealthy family long prominent in local civic affairs. He was sickly as a child, suffering especially from asthma, but he early devoted himself to vigorous exercise, gaining a physical stamina and love of outdoor sports that became a hallmark of his character. Graduating from Harvard in 1880, Roosevelt married Alice Hathaway Lee and the next year was elected to the New York State Assembly, where he became a leader among the minority of Republicans who pressed for social reform through government regulation. He first headed West in , drawn to the Dakota Territory by reports that three years of systematic hunting had all but destroyed the once massive buffalo herd of the northern plains. Roosevelt was determined to add this symbol of the American West to his trophy collection before it became extinct, and despite punishing weather, he stayed in the field until he accomplished his goal. At the same time, Roosevelt became enamored of the western landscape and the strenuous outdoor life of the plains, and purchased two ranches in the Dakota Badlands before heading back east.

U.S. president. Author. Big-game hunter. Political reformer. Cavalryman. Conservationist. Rancher. Nobel Peace Prize winner. Few individuals have lived as eclectic, as active, or as productive a life as Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) did. On October 27, his birthday, give your students the opportunity to learn about the 26th president of the United States. Check out some great Web sites for teaching about Theodore Roosevelt.
Theodore Roosevelt was, in many ways, one of the most influential and accomplished leaders in American history. The 26th president, known as a "trust buster," broke up some of the nation's largest corporations, helped secure the passage of the Meat Inspection Act for consumer protection, and greatly expanded the powers and responsibilities of the presidency. In foreign affairs, Roosevelt reversed the previous policy of isolationism and ensured the country its place as a world leader. Perhaps his greatest and most lasting contribution was in the area of conservation. Through the creation of national forests, federal bird reservations, and national game preserves, Roosevelt protected more than 200 million acres of land through the federal government. Roosevelt's personal life was every bit as interesting and varied as his public life. A sickly child who suffered from asthma, he took on a regimen of exercise, weightlifting, and boxing to improve his health and his competitive edge. Largely self-educated, Roosevelt later graduated with honors from Harvard University. A life-long book-lover and prolific writer he wrote dozens of non-fiction books on a wide array of subjects he was also an avid outdoorsman whose experiences as a rancher and a big-game hunter are legendary.

Biography

Theodore Roosevelt, (1858-1919), ro'z[sch ]-v[sch ]lt, 26th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . A dynamic leader and a fervent nationalist, Roosevelt was one of the most popular, controversial, and important presidents. He greatly expanded presidential power while making the United States the virtual guardian of the Western Hemisphere and a major force in European and Far Eastern affairs. He was also the first president-reformer of the modern erathe first who both understood and reacted constructively to the technological revolution and the rise of a nationwide system of commerce and industry. He increased regulation of business, encouraged the growth of labor unions, and stimulated the rise of the welfare state. He also dramatized the need to conserve natural resources, and his policies advanced the cause of conservation. As the scion of a mercantile family long prominent in New York City's affairs, Roosevelt was imbued with a sense of noblesse oblige and civic responsibility and with the conviction that morality was the measure of manliness. Neither his later realization of the imperfectibility of man and his institutions nor his acceptance of politics as the art of the possible ever changed the ultimate ideal. Unquestionably, he was the greatest preacher ever to occupy the WHITE HOUSE . Yet his egotism was strident, he was often self-righteous, and he sometimes acted ruthlessly. Despite extraordinary services to world peace while president, moreover, he came close to being a lover of war.
