It is not only that he was a great man, but, oh, there was such fun in being led by him.
A New York police captain While he is in the neighborhood the public can no more look the other way than the small boy can turn his head away from a circus parade followed by a steam calliope. James Gordon Bennett, Jr.
The Strenuous Life Theodore Roosevelt was not only a statesman but a cowboy, soldier, hunter, naturalist, and explorer. He advised everyone to lead "the strenuous life." While he was in the White House he rode horseback, played tennis, or took a rough cross-country walk daily. He often played tennis on the White House lawnhis companions became known as the "tennis cabinet." In his autobiography Roosevelt wrote that often they would make a "point to point" walk, not turning aside for anything. If their route took them through Rock Creek Park in Washington, they might have to swim Rock Creek and scale the steep walls of cliffs. They swam the creek in their clothes when ice was floating thick in it. A Devoted Father He entertained his 6 children and their many cousins and friends with equal energy. Their home, named Sagamore Hill, in Oyster Bay, Long Island, was a happy place for childrenthere were picnics and overnight camping trips, swimming and rowing in the Sound, and wonderful Christmas and Fourth of July celebrations. He was not always in favor with the mothers, however, because he let the children go swimming with their clothes on and he took them on hikes from which they returned dirty and ragged. He was never too busy to have breakfast with the children or for a story before they went to bed.

Notable during his administration were the acquisition (1903) of the Panama Canal; bringing representatives of Russia and Japan together, with the resulting Treaty of Portsmouth (1905) ending the Russo-Japanese War, for which he received the Nobel prize for peace (1906); aggressive policies for regulating business and curbing trusts, especially dissolution (1911) of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey; efforts to conserve national resources, especially passage of the Newlands Reclamation Act (1902); announced (1904) the Roosevelt Corollary, making the U.S. the defender of the Western Hemisphere. ROOSEVELT, THEODORE
Rooke’s Journal for 5700—2 has been printed by the Navy Record Society. ROOM, originally a word meaning space or accommodation; the ordinary meaning of an apartment in a building, one of the interior divisions of a house, dates from the 15th century. The word is common to Teutonic languages, cf. Du. ruim, Ger. Raum, Swed. and Dan. rum, with the original meaning of space. Skeat connects the word with the root seen in Lat. rus, open country. himself by his energy and bravery, receiving the 3rd class of the order of the Red Eagle in recognition of his services. While attached to the Crown Prince’s staff at that time he broached to him the subject of his schemes of army reform. In 1850 came the revelation of defective organization and efficiency which led to the humiliating treaty of Olmtitz. In the same year Roon was made a lieutenant-colonel, and in 1851 full colonel. He now enjoyed the confidence of Prince William, and began active work as reorganizer of the army. After his death his son published the valuable Denkwflrdigkeiten aus dem Leben des Generalfeldmarschalls Kriegsministers Grafen Roon (2 vols, Breslau, 1892), and Kriegsminister von Roon als Red ner pot itisch und snilitarisch erldutert (Breslau, 1895). His correspondence with his friend Professor Cl. Perthes, 1864—67, was also published at Breslau in 1895.

Roosevelt, Theodore
, twenty-sixth president of the United States . Roosevelt became a national hero when he led his Rough Riders up Kettle Hill in Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. He then served as Republican governor of New York before being elected vice president in 1900. Roosevelt became president in 1901 after the assassination of William McKinley. He is known for his trust busting, programs for conservation of natural resources, and creation of national parks. His Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine claimed the United States could intervene militarily in the Latin American states. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906 for helping negotiate an end to the Russo-Japanese War. He also initiated the building of the Panama Canal Roosevelt supported Republican William Howard Taft for president in 1908 but tried for the Republican nomination in 1912. When he lost it to Taft, he split with the Republicans and started the Progressive , or Bull Moose party, with himself running for president. The split Republicans lost the election to the Democrats and Woodrow Wilson. Roosevelt hoped to gain the Republican nomination in 1916, but the delegates chose Charles Evans Hughes as their standard-bearer.

Testimony of LANDMARK WEST!
Certificate of Appropriateness Committee
Before the Art Commission
Regarding The Alfred Nobel Monument in Theodore Roosevelt Park
November 13, 2001 LANDMARK WEST! is a non-profit community organization committed to the preservation of the architectural heritage of the Upper West Side. The Certificate of Appropriateness Committee wishes to comment on the application to install a monument honoring Alfred Nobel and the American Nobel Laureates in Theodore Roosevelt Park. The following statement does not differ significantly from the statement Landmark West! submitted to this commission on October 9, 2001, when we objected strongly to what was, quite frankly, an almost identical proposal for an Alfred Nobel Monument in Theodore Roosevelt Park at the American Museum of Natural History. The hiatus of more than a month has brought about no meaningful changes to the design, which, as demonstrated by the full-scale, on-site mock-up presented to the Commissioners last Wednesday, remains completely out of scale and character with the landscape of the park. One senses, perhaps more acutely than ever, that this monument was designed in a vacuum, without any reference to its visual context or to the educational function it is intended to serve. Again, we question whether the composition is driven by an artistic vision and the desire to fulfill an educational function or the need to list a certain number of names. Even though the overall height of the monument has been decreased, the size of the lettering still appears illegibly small and, therefore, will be inaccessible to much of its prospective audience, especially children.

Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt, in total disregard for his personal safety, and accompanied by only four or five men, led a desperate and gallant charge up San Juan Hill, encouraging his troops to continue the assault through withering enemy fire over open countryside. Facing the enemy's heavy fire, he displayed extraordinary bravery throughout the charge, and was the frst to reach the enemy trenches, where he quickly killed one of the enemy with his pistol, allowing his men to continue the assault. His leadership and valor turned the tide in the Battle for San Juan Hill. Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect greet credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

    Roosevelt, Theodore: Presidency
    Domestic Policy
Roosevelt's inexhaustible vitality and enthusiasm, aided by his ability to dramatize himself and to coin vivid phrases, made him a popular president. His intellectual interests did much to elevate the tone of American politics. On the other hand, he drew considerable criticism for his glorification of military strength and his patriotic fervor. He recognized, from the outset of his first administration, the growing demand for reform that was expressed in the writings of the muckrakers Sherman Antitrust Act , ordered the successful antitrust suit against the Northern Securities Company, and led the attack on a number of other large trusts. Altogether, his administration began some 40 suits against trusts. Roosevelt's threat to intervene in the anthracite coal strike of 1902 induced the operators to accept arbitration. In his second administration Roosevelt directed the passage (1906) of the Hepburn Act, which revitalized the Interstate Commerce Commission

Theodore Roosevelt With the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, not quite 43, became the youngest President in the Nation's history. He brought new excitement and power to the Presidency, as he vigorously led Congress and the American public toward progressive reforms and a strong foreign policy. He took the view that the President as a "steward of the people" should take whatever action necessary for the public good unless expressly forbidden by law or the Constitution." I did not usurp power," he wrote, "but I did greatly broaden the use of executive power." Roosevelt's youth differed sharply from that of the log cabin Presidents. He was born in New York City in 1858 into a wealthy family, but he too struggledagainst ill healthand in his triumph became an advocate of the strenuous life.
