ELIHU ROOT
TLS: "Elihu Root" Clinton, N.Y., 1932 July 11. To Mrs. Samuel Gompers, widow of the first president of the American Federation of Labor. In full: "A good many years ago, when there was pending in Congress a bill tending to fix he wages of labor by law, I received a letter from your husband asking my opinion as to whether such a law would not restore the old statute of laborers that fixed a maximum wage for labor in England in the XIV Century. I was much impressed by the breadth of view which enabled Mr. Gompers to see that the important thing was the principle of action and that the principle of government control might be applied very injuriously. From that time on I felt that Mr. Gomper's (sic) leadership was an element of safety for sound government and that for years that followed to the end of his life I maintained that opinion. With kind regards and good wishes." Root was Secretary of War (1899-1904), Secretary of State (1905-1909) and became Republican Senator from New York (1909-1915). President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (1910-1925), he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. The 87-year-old elder statesman has penned "XIV" in ink. Slightly creased. Pinhead-size hole with circular paper reinforcement at upper left. Fine condition.

The Nobel Peace Prize
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 ‹ The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.
