Jaime Ferrán conseguiu a imunização contra o cólera.

A brief History: In 1214, Alexander II led his army to the north to put down the rebellion of the son of Donald Bane, a rival claimant to the throne. He was aided by the chief of Clam Ross, Fearchar Mac an t¹sagirt, which in English acclaimed him to be Œson of the priest¹, alluding to his O¹Beolan descent from the hereditary Abbots of Applecross. Fearcher was knighted by his king, and by 1234 he was formally recognised in the title of Earl of Ross. The earl¹s son, William, received grants of land in Skye and Lewis. William¹s son, also William, was abducted around 1250 during a revolt against the earl¹s rule, and was rescued with help from the Munros, who were rewarded with grants of land and became closely connected to their powerful benefactors. The last chief to hold the earldom was another William, who died in 1372. Euphemia, his only daughter, claimed the earldom as Countess of Ross, but it eventually passed through the Macdonalds of the Isles into the hands of the Crown in 1476. The chiefship devolved upon William¹s younger half-brother, Hugh of Balnagowan. Pitcalnie continued to be regarded as the chief by the clan, and he was acknowledged by the great Simon Fraser, Lord Lovat, who wrote in 1740 hailing him as Œbrother chief¹. In the risings of 1715 and 1745 the clan as a whole avoided Jacobite intrigues, although Malcolm, the Younger of Pitcalnie, joined the ŒOld Pretender¹.

Nobel Prizes are awarded annually by the Swedish Academy of Science to individuals who have made the most important discovery or invention that materially benefits mankind during the preceding year in one of a number of fields. The awards were established according to the will of Alfred Bernhard Nobel, a Swedish manufacturer, inventor, and philanthropist. The prize for Physiology or Medicine is presented each year by the Caroline Medico-Surgical Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

Sir Ronald Ross was a British physician and entomologist, noted for identifying the links between mosquitoes and malaria Ronald Ross was born in India in 1857 at Almora. His father was a soldier who eventually became a general in the Indian army. Ross lived in India until he was eight ,when he was sent away to boarding school in Southampton, England. At school he seemed to have been a dreamy imaginative boy whose main interest was in writing poetry, painting and composing music. When he left school his father suggested he went on to study medicine. Ross readily agreed, as he had no idea of what he wanted to do. So, in 1874 he became a medical student at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London. In 1879 Ross just managed to pass his Royal College of Surgeons exam - after 3 days cramming. This meant that he could only practice as a ship's surgeon, which he did for a couple of years until he passed an exam for the Society of Apothecaries. This meant that in 1881 Ross could join the British-Indian army medical services and eleven years later he began investigating the transmission and control of malaria. HOW DID HE DO THIS?

What is the Nobel Prize? Source: Nobel
Alfred Nobel was a Swedish chemist. He invented dynamite and became very wealthy. When he died he left more than nine million dollars of his fortune to set up the Nobel prizes. According to his will, of 1895, the income from this fund was to be allotted each year in five equal parts as prizes to those who had most helped humanity. The interest from the money provides annual prizes for the greatest services to humanity in science and literature, and for the most effective work to promote friendship between nations (the Peace Prize). The Nobel prizes were first awarded on 10 December 1901, the fifth anniversary of Nobel's death.
The Development of Dynamite
Nobel experimented a lot with nitroglycerine by itself and mixed with gunpowder. He patented detonating charges and percussion caps in 1864. He used these as a primary charge to trigger an explosion. Nobel later used a special clay from northern Germany to stabilise the nitroglycerine. When tested with a percussion cap, the preparation exploded evenly although with less power than nitroglycerine alone. He called this mixture of nitroglycerine and clay "dynamite".
Nobel developed other explosive substances. Blasting gelatine, another powerful explosive, was a solution of gun cotton in nitroglycerine. Guncotton is a preparation of nitric acid and cellulose invented by Christian Schonbein in Germany in 1845. This evolved into modern dynamite which is a mixture of nitroglycerine and guncotton, with some additional ingredients.

A Century of Achievement for the School of Tropical Medicine
On 12 November 1898, Sir Alfred Lewis Jones, a Liverpool Shipowner, donated £350 to set up a School of Tropical Diseases; the forerunner of what is now the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as it looked at the turn of the century. The first of its kind in the world, between 1898 and 1913 the School dispatched no fewer than 32 expeditions to the tropics, including Sierra Leone, the Congo and the Amazon. The pioneering work of the School's scientists have, over the last 100 years, seen many successes and achievements. Notable among these was Sir Ronald Ross who became the first British winner of a Nobel prize for medicine when, in 1902, he was recognised for his discovery that the malaria parasite was carried by the mosquito. The School's scientists also developed the first drug to treat malaria and pioneered treatments for sleeping sickness and relapsing fever.
