Leopold Stephen Ruzicka
Staudinger
, who was, at 27, only 6 1/2 years older. There were few bureaucratic formalities; he had attended the prescribed lectures neither in chemical technology nor, unfortunately, in physical chemistry and physics.
After two years of research work Ruzicka was a "Dipl. Ing", and two weeks later "Dr. Ing". Staudinger appointed him as his assistant, and they together entered the quite unexplored field of the active constituents - named by them pyrethrins - of Dalmatian insect powder, a plant product, toxic to insects and other coldblooded animals. They thus opened a new chapter of alicyclic chemistry, which was then as unfamiliar to Ruzicka as it was to Staudinger.
In October 1912 he followed Staudinger who became 's successor at the newly dubbed " " (ETH, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) at Zurich. In Switzerland he found not only a second homeland but also a peaceful and convivial environment that brought with it all the conditions for uninterrupted research. In 1917 he acquired Swiss citizenship.

Ruzicka, Leopold,
Adolf Butenandt of Germany, of the 1939 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on ringed molecules, terpenes (a class of hydrocarbons found in the essential oils of many plants), and sex hormones. Ruzicka's investigations of natural odoriferous compounds, begun in 1916, culminated in the discovery that the molecules of muskone and civetone, important to the perfume industry, contain rings of 15 and 17 carbon atoms, respectively. Before this discovery, rings with more than eight atoms had been unknown and indeed had been believed to be too unstable to exist. Ruzicka's discovery greatly expanded research on these compounds. He also showed that the carbon skeletons of terpenes and many other large organic molecules are constructed from multiple units of isoprene. In the mid-1930s Ruzicka discovered the molecular structure of several male sex hormones, notably testosterone and androsterone, and subsequently synthesized them.

(13 September 1887 - 26 September 1976) Portrait Leopold Ruzicka
From the Picture Archive of the ETH-Bibliothek. Biography Leopold Ruzicka was born on 13 September 1887 in Vukovar (Croatia). He studied chemistry at the University of Applied Sciences in Karlsruhe between 1906 and 1910 und was an assistant lecturer at the ETH Zurich between 1912 and 1916. He then worked in the chemical industry. At the same time, he lectured at the ETH and was appointed Professor in 1923. In 1927, he moved to the University of Utrecht as Professor of Organic Chemistry, returning to the ETH Zurich in 1929 to succeed Richard Kuhn as Professor. He remained at the ETH until he was awarded emeritus status in 1957. In 1939, Ruzicka was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work on polymethylene and higher terpene compounds. He was also politically active (in the Swiss-Jugoslav aid organization and in protests against nuclear weapons) and gained a reputation as an art collector. He donated a number of paintings by Dutch masters to the Zurich Museum of Fine Art, and established a Ruzicka Foundation with the aim of adding to this collection within the Museum. Every year, the ETH awards the Ruzicka Prize, supported by the chemical industry, to young chemists working in Switzerland.

Ruzicka studied chemistry at the Technical University of Karlsruhe (Germany), where he received his doctorate under H. Staudinger (1910). After a professorship in Utrecht (The Netherlands) (1927-1929) he became professor of chemistry at the Swiss Federal Institut for Technology (ETH). His main work started in 1921. It involved: macrocyclic compounds, higher terpenes and steroids. He shared the Nobel Prize with Butenandt in 1939. His "biogenetic isoprene rule", which was pioneered by Wallach, became, in 1953, the crowning of his life. Links www.nobel.se/chemistry/laureates/1939/index.html

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Leopold Ruzicka The Nobel Prize for Chemistry 1939 Leopold Stephen Ruzicka was born on September 3, 1887, in Vukovar. His father, Stjepan Ruzicka, was a cooper; his mother's maiden name was Ljubica Sever. After the early death of his father in 1891, he returned with his mother to her birthplace, Osijek, on the Drava somewhat west of its junction with the Danube. There he attended the primary school and the classical gymnasium where the Croatian language was used. He wanted to study at the Zurich Polytechnic Institute but found to his dismay that an entrance examination was required not only in chemistry but also in "descriptive geometry". He chose the Technische Hochshule at Karlsrohe, where he began his chemical studies in 1906. After two years of research work Ruzicka was a "Dipl. Ing", and two weeks later "Dr. Ing". Professor Staudinger appointed him as his assistant, and they together entered the quite unexplored field of the active constituents-named by them pyrethrins-of Dalmatian insect powder, a plant product, toxic to insects and other cold-blooded animals. The Nazi invasion of neighboring Finland meant that the traditional Nobel prize-giving ceremony could not be held on 10 December in : Stockholm. The 1939 Nobel Prize for Chemistry was finally awarded to Leopold Ruzicka on 16 January 1940 in the great hall of the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich "in recognition of his work on polymethylenes and polyterpenes". Leopold Ruzicka was born in the Austro-Hungarian town of Vukovar (in Croatia). He studied chemistry at Karlsruhe Technical University in Germany where he was awarded a doctorate in 1910. He remained there as an assistant until 1916. His work during this period included the isolation of several compounds from chrysanthemums. Ruzicka was granted Swiss citizenship in 1917 and shortly afterwards became 1 senior lecturer at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. In 1921 he moved to the University of Zurich where he was appointed professor two years later. After spending 18 months in the private sector at a perfumer's in Geneva, he was appointed professor of organic chemistry at the University of Utrecht in Holland in 1926. From 1929 he taught at the
