    University of Zagreb
A Short History of the University
The first university institution in Croatia was founded by the Dominicans in Zadar in 1396 as the `studium generale' for theology. Its international character can be seen from the fact that one of its first students had been fra Bonaventura of Ferrara (inscribed in 1396). In its earliest period it had twenty students from Italy, two from Poland and one from Germany. This institution had the privilege of conferring doctorates of theology. It existed until 1806, when it was canceled during the French (Napoleon's) occupation. Unfortunately, in that period many documents witnessing the early history of the Croatian University had been destroyed. Leopold I., the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, issued a Diploma in 1669, by which the status and privileges of a university were accorded to the Jesuit Academy in the Royal Free City of Zagreb. This represents the beginning of the University of Zagreb. The Jesuits also started the first grammar school in Zagreb in 1607. Croatia was at that time one of the states of the Holy Roman Empire and bore the old name: the Kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia. Let us mention some of the Universities that were founded before and after the Universities of Zadar and Zagreb: Bologna 1219, Padova 1220, Paris 1220, Oxford 1249, Lisabon 1290, Rome 1303, Cambridge 1318, Florence 1321, Praha 1348, Krakow 1364, Vienna 1365, Erfurt 1379, Heidelberg 1385

    33. Ruzicka
explained by the French transcription Rougitchka . From nobel Lectures, Chemistry 19221941. leopold Stephen ruzicka died in 1976.
    http://www.hrvati.ch/osobe/ruzicka/ruzicka.html
prof.dr.leopold ruzicka iz knjige zvonimira cicica "die kroaten in der schweiz" rodna kuca prof. dr. lavoslava ruzicke u vukovaru nakon srpske agresije. LEOPOLD STEPHEN RUZICKA
After two years of research work Ruzicka was a "Dipl. Ing", and two weeks later "Dr. Ing". Staudinger appointed him as his assistant, and they together entered the quite unexplored field of the active constituents - named by them pyrethrins - of Dalmatian insect powder, a plant product, toxic to insects and other coldblooded animals. They thus opened a new chapter of alicyclic chemistry, which was then as unfamiliar to Ruzicka as it was to Staudinger.
In October 1912 he followed Staudinger who became Willstätter's successor at the newly dubbed "Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule" (ETH, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) at Zurich. In Switzerland he found not only a second homeland but also a peaceful and convivial environment that brought with it all the conditions for uninterrupted research. In 1917 he acquired Swiss citizenship.
In the previous year he had already started independent work and this decision initiated the most fruitful and happy decade of his life, when he could work at the laboratory bench from morning to night, on problems of his own choosing, with no teaching responsibilities, except one hour weekly from 1918 onward. During the years 1920-1924 he laid the fundaments of all his future work.

Unfortunately we are not in a position to support other projects. Please look at our page "links" for other possible sources of support. The Marcel Benoist Foundation for the promotion of scientific research was founded on November 5, 1920 by the Swiss Federal Council to execute the last will and testament of Marcel Benoist, a French national living in Lausanne who had unexpectedly left his wealth to the Swiss Confederation under the condition that it be used to fund an annual scientific award. In his testament written in 1914, he expressed his intent to endow a scientific award: "I give and bequeath to the Government of the Helvetic Republic all the assets which I have deposited in Switzerland, at the Swiss National Bank in Bern and at the Swiss Bank Corporation in Basle. The income from these assets shall be used to award every year a single prize to a scientist of Swiss nationality or a resident of Switzerland, who shall have made during the year the most useful scientific discovery or study, in particular in disciplines which are of significance for human life." The wording of this quotation is very similar to the corresponding paragraph in Alfred Nobel's testament, suggesting that this may have been the inspiration of Marcel Benoist. Beyond this, there are no other indications of the motives which led a French lawyer to leave his wealth to the Swiss Confederation and establish what has since become the oldest annual scientific prize in Switzerland.
