The Nile Collar, symbol of great achievements
Egypt, Local, 1/4/2000 According to Egyptian law, the Nile Collar is the highest ranking of all Egyptian decorations. It is granted exclusively to kings, heads of state and those who rendered great services on the national or human level in general.
The Order is handed by the president in person. Holder of the Order is given a handwritten certificate in ëDiwanií calligraphy on a special kind of paper known as ëBarshawmaní. The certificate derives its importance from the signature of the president.
The Nile Collar is a chain of pure gold with three square-shaped units adorned with colored enamel. The first three units are repeated successively to form a system of values related to the ancient Egyptian civilization.
The first unit symbolizes the protection of the country against evils, the second happiness and prosperity brought about by the Nile, the third good and continuity.
Every unit is connected with the other through a circular-shaped golden flower decorated with the blue turquoise and red ruby stones. The Grand Order of the Nile has a jewel linked with the chain by a decorated clip coated with enamel turquoise and ruby stones with a motif in the middle showing the Nile that unified the North represented by papyrus and the South represented by lotus.

'Expect the worst' from Arabs, says writer By Michel Sailhan CAIRO The world should "expect the worst because of the humiliation" suffered by Arabs in Iraq and the Palestinian territories, Egyptian novelist Sonallah Ibrahim said. "Israeli and US arrogance are humiliating us every single day," said the writer who is now putting the final touches to a new novel, The American Syndrome, that deals indirectly with Iraq. Ibrahim, 65, spent five years in jail during the regime of Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser for his left-wing advocacy. Uprooting terrorism
Restoring domestic stability was President Hosni Mubarak's top priority upon assuming power. But, as Ahmed Moussa reports, some mistakes were made before this goal was achieved When President Hosni Mubarak came to power following the assassination of Anwar El-Sadat in October 1981, the nation was facing unprecedented instability. In the words of Hassan Abu Basha, who was appointed interior minister three months after Sadat's killing, "that was a period when a security setback occurred, taking the form of sectarian sedition and an unprecedented escalation of terrorism." A few days after the assassination, militants stormed the security department of the southern city of Assiut, killing 120 officers and policemen and injuring 150 others. Mubarak, addressing on 3 January 1982 the first meeting of his cabinet, said the restoration of stability was his first priority. Socio-economic development and a greater margin of democracy would follow. The first step towards the restoration of stability was to unravel the secrets of, and then smash, the Jihad group which the government had blamed for Sadat's assassination. Investigators reached the conclusion that the militant Islamist Jihad had planned to launch an "Islamic revolution" by killing Sadat and then broadcasting its "Communiqué No. 1" on state television. A special Jihad unit had made preparations to storm the headquarters of Egyptian television in downtown Cairo, but these were either foiled or the attempt to implement them was aborted.

Liberating Nasser's legacy
By Hosny Guindy and Hani Shukrallah "We might begin by setting down an overall framework for dealing with this question. First of all, we need to understand that what is at issue is not the business of privileging one page of our history over another; we are dealing with history, and history is a human product. The object of our inquiry is a human experience, with all the successes and failures that each and every human experience must encompass. "Secondly, there is the polarity of the vendetta, on one hand, and nostalgia and here we should note that nostalgia is a product of alienation, the natural outcome of placing people at odds with their own experience, and their awareness of that experience on the other. This polarity has for too long plagued Egypt's attempts to come to terms with its history under Nasser. Now, 30 years after Nasser's death, the time has come to untangle the experience from both the feelings of nostalgia with which its supporters envelop it and the vengeance that its enemies continue to exact upon it. "Thirdly, to understand any human experience, we must situate it within its time; it is at once the product of a particular age, and of the human agency that played a part in the shaping of that age. Fourth and last, to put any kind of human experience to the test, we need to ask about its results. Today, 30 years on, we are in possession of sufficient data to provide the tools to measure the outcome of the Nasserist experience.

50% EXTREMISTS :
Voices of the far right : Was Le PenÕs strong showing an accident or a wake-up call?
(Eric Alterman, 4/25/02, MSNBC)
While the U.S. and French election systems have almost nothing in common, the predicaments facing each societyÕs political system are similar. Both are characterized primarily by apathy. In both cases, the forces on the left are so divided that they are allowing a far-right minority to define the terms of the debate in the larger society while internecine arguments and self-recriminations dominate their thoughts and energies. The spokespeople for these allegedly liberal parties are terrified of saying anything of substance for fear of alienating any of these combative constituencies as well as the precious centrist or ÒundecidedÓ voter. The result is that the base remains unmotivated, except on the fringes, and when apathy rules on the left, the right is able to steal not only elections, but also the entire political discourse.
Either the far right is stronger in France than it is here or it is dumber. In the United States, our right-wing extremists are better disciplined than those in France and our own Naderites. As the failure of the Buchanan campaign demonstrates, they were smart enough to work through the Republican Party in exchange for future concessions from the Bush campaign, rather than challenge their natural allies with the prospect of being a spoiler. They were ultimately rewarded when John Ashcroft - a far-right ex-senator who was so extreme that he managed to lose an election to a dead man - was named U.S. attorney general.

    The Modern Metropolis
Years before the 1952 Cairo fire, a young Egyptian officer called Gamal Abdel-Nasser was determined to drive the British forever out of Egypt. Nasser was born in 1918 in the poor Alexandrian suburb of Bacos to southern Egyptian parents. He graduated at the Military College and fought at the first Arab-Israeli War. Together with a group of colleagues, he formed a semi-underground organization, The Free Officers , and carefully planned his coup. In the morning of July 23, 1952, Egyptians heard on the news that the Free Officers, led by General Mohamed Naguib , assumed control over strategic military zones within Cairo and elsewhere in a white coup. General Naguib was a respected senior officer who was only appointed as a figure-leader to enhance the credibility of the coup. On July 26, King Farouk of Egypt left Alexandria on his personal Yacht, never to return to Egypt again, and his toddler son, Ahmad Fouad , was soon declared King. The remaining British troops were asked to evacuate the country and, by 1954, the last British soldier had indeed left. Whatever their motive, the Free Officers gradually engaged in politics during the following years. Some believe they were driven by the events and supported by the long-oppressed citizens, some think they were seduced by power, and others affirm that every step was planned from the very beginning. In 1953, the Free Officers deposed Ahmad Fouad, the last King, and declared Egypt a Republic, with Mohamed Naguib as its first president. Naguib, who grew up within the old system, was a courageous yet peaceful man and had no plans for radical change. So he too was deposed in 1954 by the true leader of the coup, Nasser, who became the country's head of state. Mohamed Naguib was banned from participating in politics, and died broke in 1981. He was the first Egyptian to rule Egypt since the Pharaoh Nectanebo I, a contemporary of Alexander the Great.
