Some Thoughts on Heroes
(And Their Imperfections)
Addressing concerns over the phrase "School Sakharovs"
by Marshall Fritz Among Separation supporters, there is a special group we refer to as "School Sakharovs." These are heroic individuals who have worked within the state school system, have witnessed its failures first hand, and who now speak out in favor of Separation. Every few months, a fellow Separationist calls or writes with concern that we should not be exalting Andrei Sakharov because he was an atheist who signed the Humanist Manifesto II In the past, I've answered these questions privately, but as the issue recurs it is time to put something in writing. We chose Sakharov not for his religion or his overall political views. We picked him because his insight, courage, and personal sacrifice sent shock waves through the thinking people of the Soviet Union and contributed to the fall of an "evil empire." A leading physicist and father of the Soviet hydrogen bomb program, he used his prestige to warn ever-widening circles of the dangers of the dysfunctional Soviet system. Let's look a little closer at who Sakharov was. The following information was gleaned from a history published by the

Elena Bonner:
Human Rights Activism As a Way of Life
/ Text by Guy H. ARCHER

The Sakharovs’ gambled that, while the Soviet government wanted them silenced, their own deaths would nevertheless be an international scandal for the USSR. They staged several hunger strikes. One was a successful bid to allow Mrs. Bonner’s daughter-in-law to join her husband in the United States. It took Dr. Sakharov three hunger strikes, however, to force the government to grant Mrs. Bonner permission to go to the United States for open-heart, sextuple bypass surgery.
She returned to Gorky in June 1986, and to the prospect of a very grim future. In an interview, I asked her recently how she and Dr. Sakharov had endured such isolation. “It was hard,” she said, “but we stood it well because we were together. I think that our profound mutual understanding and inner interaction gave us the strength to stand it. The time when Andrei Dmitrievich was taken to a hospital by force [to be force-fed during a hunger strike] was the hardest.”

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

PREFACE
Superlatives have long since become redundant when referring to Andrei Sakharov, one of the great heroes of the twentieth century and an inspiration to all who have dedicated their life to making this world a better place for the future. His legacy as a world-renowned physicist and human rights activist is unsurpassed. To celebrate his memory and promote the ideals he fought for all his life, the Biopolitics International Organisation (B.I.O.) held the International Sakharov Festival in Athens, July 28-31, 1994, with the theme "Biopolitics - the Bio-Environment - Bio-Culture in the Next Millennium." But more than just a tribute to Andrei Sakharov, the International Sakharov Festival was a celebration of life. With the eminent musician and humanitarian Mstislav Rostropovich presiding and Elena Bonner, Andrei Sakharov's widow as the guest of honour, the Festival brought together leading personalities from around the world in an attempt to strengthen the concept of a global bio-culture for the next millennium. This initiative constituted a conscious effort to take the issue of bio-environmental protection one step further. Outside the confines of conventional approaches to environmental matters, bio-culture represents a global appreciation of bios. The bio-environment has always been the single most important correlation in human society. In this crucial period of transition, the bio-environment can help transcend boundaries and attain international co-operation and understanding, so critical for the future of humanity. Many people believe that humanity lives in an era of decline. A global shadow of environmental threats shows the approaching dangers that jeopardise our very existence on this planet. Bios has evolved for billions of years. As we are standing on the doorstep of a new millennium, we need to awaken our senses and appreciate this precious gift.
