(Translation from the Russian text)
I was born on 21 May 1921. My father was a well-known teacher of physics and the author of textbooks, exercise books and works of popular science. I grew up in a large communal apartment where most of the rooms were occupied by my family and relations and only a few by outsiders. The house was pervaded by a strong traditional family spirit - a vital enthusiasm for work and respect for professional competence. Within the family we provided one another with mutual support, just as we shared a love of literature and science.
My father played the piano remarkably well, in particular Chopin, Grieg, Beethoven and Scriabin. During the civil war he earned a living by playing the accompaniment to silent films at the cinema.
I am especially grateful for the memory of my grandmother, Maria Petrovna, who was the family's good spirit. She died before the war at the age of 79. My grandmother brought up six children and when she was around 50 years old she taught herself English all on her own. Right up to the time of her death she read English works of fiction in the original. From when we were quite small she read aloud to us, her grandchildren. I still have the most vivid memory of her reading to us those evenings. It would be Pushkin, Dickens, Marlowe or Beecher-Stowe, and in Holy Week, the Gospel.

He was an outspoken human-rights campaigner, who with Igor Tamm developed the hydrogen bomb. He later protested against Soviet nuclear tests and was a founder of the Soviet Human Rights Committee in 1970. In 1975 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace for his advocacy of human rights and disarmament. For criticizing Soviet action in Afghanistan, he was sent into internal exile 198086. Sakharov was elected to the Congress of the USSR People's Deputies in 1989, where he emerged as leader of its radical reform grouping before his death later the same year.

EIGHTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTHDAY OF DR. ANDREI SAKHAROV HON. CHRISTOPHER H. SMITH
of New Jersey M r. Speaker, today I would like to call to the attention of my colleagues the 80th anniversary of the birth of the late Dr. Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov, one of the truly great figures in the struggle for human rights in the 20th century. On May 21 of this year, Dr. Sakharov would have celebrated his 80th birthday.
A
A t the same time, the Kremlin, under the leadership of former KGB chairman Yuri Andropov, launched a crackdown on Soviet dissidents. In 1984, Dr. Sakharov's wife, Dr. Elena Bonner, was convicted of ``defaming the Soviet political and social system'' and sentenced to join him in exile.
E ven in these dark hours, Dr. Sakharov, continued to speak out against the war being carried out by Soviet forces in Afghanistan, to defend persecuted human rights activists in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and to address vital issues of disarmament and peace. On three occasions, Dr. Sakharov went on a hunger strike to protest the mistreatment of hls friends and colleagues in the human rights movement. During his confinement, his notes and his manuscripts were stolen from him by KGB thugs. President Reagan declared his sixtieth birthday, May 21, 1980, ``Andrei Salcharov Day.''
I n December 1986, Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev lifted Dr. Sakharov's exile and ``invited'' him to return to Moscow. In 1989, Dr. Salcharov was elected to the Congress of People Deputies, an organization that had previously been the rubber stamp legislature for the Soviet Union. In the short time that he served, Dr. Sakharovj''olned a handful of other elected leaders to press for real reforms in the Soviet Union. On December 14, 1989, the world was sadden to learn of this great man's death.

Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov Every country and every nation has its own prominent personalities. Our country has a very rich history and many famous people influenced it. There were such great reformers as Peter the Great, Peter Stolipin and some others. We would like to speak about academician Andrei Sakharov whose name and feat will remain in the history of our country and in the whole world. Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov was born on the 21st of May 1921. His father was a teacher of Physics, a well-known author of popular-scientific books, textbooks, and books of problems in arithmetic. Many generations of Russian (Soviet) people use them in their studies. In 1938 Andrei finished school with a golden medal and entered Moscow University of Physics. He graduated with honours diploma from the University and evacuated in Ashkhabad in 1942. In the September of 1942 he was sent to work at a military plant on the Volga, where he worked as an engineer till 1945. Working at the plant, he became an inventor in the branch of production checking. In 1944 he wrote several articles on the theory of Physics and sent them to Moscow waiting for a reference. In 1948 Sakharov was included into a Research Group which worked at the problem of thermonuclear weapons. The following 12 years were spent in a special secret Research Center.

50,000 ATTEND RALLY, FUNERAL FOR SAKHAROV
Author: By Paul Quinn-Judge, Globe Staff Date: Tuesday, December 19, 1989

Section:
NATIONAL/FOREIGN MOSCOW In chilly and miserable weather, Andrei D. Sakharov, the Soviet human rights activist, was buried yesterday, after government officials and former dissidents alike paid tribute to him at a funeral attended by about 50,000 people. It was a day of strikingly varied ceremonies. Tens of thousands of people turned out for an open-air rally and "civic funeral" for the leading dissident at Luzhniki Stadium, which has become the regular meeting place for the opposition since the creation of a new Soviet parliament last summer. Earlier in the morning, Mikhail S. Gorbachev, the president, and other party leaders stood in the rain to pay their last respects outside the Academy of Sciences, where Sakharov was lying in state. Sakharov, a creator of the Soviet hydrogen bomb, was a member of the academy. Gorbachev offered his condolences to Sakharov's widow, Yelena Bonner, and told journalists waiting outside that "we will all feel his absence, but perestroika will go on."

Andrei Sakharov A brilliant scientist, Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov was a specialist in atomic physics, the father of the Soviet hydrogen bomb. He was elected as a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1953, and belonged to the highest Soviet establishment. He could have led a highly peaceful existence, taking advantage of all the privileges associated with his rank.
However, at the end of the 1950s - beginning of the 1960s, Academician Sakharov began to realize the aggressiveness of Soviet policy, both foreign and domestic. Alarmed by this "discovery", he spoke out as the author of a great number of declarations and actions in defense of human rights and peace throughout the world. This cost him open conflict with the authorities even as the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975.
In 1980 Academician Sakharov was exiled to Gorky, where he lived under militia surveillance, without telephone, deprived of contact with the outside world. Nevertheless, even under those circumstances he continued the struggle, with the help of his wife Elena Bonner, who held the same views. She carried out this communication until her actions were severed and she herself was subjected to the very same exile in 1984.
Released from exile in 1986, A. Sakharov returned to Moscow and continued his activity. In 1989 he was elected to the First Congress of People's Deputies of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. In this capacity he tirelessly led the battle for human rights and for the rights of nationalities, in particular, national minorities: Crimean Tatars, Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, and many others.

Biographical Details on Boys' Clothing Styles (S-Z)
Many famous and not so famous men remember the clothing and hair styles they wore as boys. Not so many years ago it was all up to mom how junior was dressed. In some cases, especially in the late 19th and early 20th Century, moms in Europe and America let their imaginations run wild, choosing elaborate Fauntleroy and kilt outfits for their darling sons. The wife in affluent families rarely worked and thus she had a great deal of time, and in some cases the assistance of nannies and governesses, to see to the care and dressing of their children. The results were very little boys kept in dresses . Ever after they passed out of dresses, little and not little boys done up in dress-like tunics and kilts and lacy Fauntleroy suits and kilts as well as more manly sailor suits
Biographical information is available on selected individuals (S-Z) here. This page is still being developed. If you have any historical information to add, do let me hear from you. Figure 1.A young Andrei Sahkarov pictured in Dutch-boy bangs and a white sailor suit during the 1920s.
