STOCKHOLM, Sweden (CNN) Outspoken Portuguese novelist Jose Saramago on Thursday was named the winner of the 1998 Nobel Literature Prize. He is the first writer in Portuguese to receive the world's most prized literary award, which is worth $950,000 and will be presented at a ceremony in Stockholm on December 9. In its citation, the Swedish Academy said it gave the award to Saramago for work that "with parables sustained by imagination, compassion and irony continually enables us to apprehend an illusory reality." The works of the 75-year-old writer, who mixes magical realism with hard-edged political comment, have been translated into 25 languages and he is indisputably Portugal's best-known literary figure.

Saramago was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1998. Other names from Portugal, often mentioned in Nobel Prize speculations, have been António Lobo Antunes, and José Cardoso Pires. "The possibility of the impossible, dreams and illusions, are the subject of my novels," Saramago has said. " In one sense it could even be said that, letter-by-letter, word-by-word, page-by-page, book after book, I have been successively implanting in the man I was the characters I created. I believe that without them I wouldn't be the person I am today; without them maybe my life wouldn't have succeeded in becoming more than an inexact sketch, a promise that like so many others remained only a promise, the existence of someone who maybe might have been but in the end could not manage to be." (from Nobel Lecture "A word lies, with the same word one can speak the truth, we are not what we say, we are true only if others believe us."

Nobel Prizewinner compares Israeli policy to Auschwitz
The Portuguese Nobel prizewinner for Literature, Jose Saramago, has made declarations attacking the Israeli policy in the occupied territories. His comments are hotly disputed by Tel Aviv.
On a visit to Israel, Jose Saramago declared to Portuguese radio station Antenna 1, that “It must be said that in Palestine, there is a crime which we can stop. We may compare it with what happened at Auschwitz”.
He added that only by visiting the territory and seeing first-hand the repressive policy adopted by Israeli soldiers against Palestinian civilians, could the injustice of the situation be understood. He reported that he had seen an ambulance carrying a pregnant Palestinian woman stopped at the border. She was refused entry and the baby was delivered in the vehicle. Others have not been so lucky.
In one incident, in October 2001, a pregnant Palestinian woman was left dying in the street near a checkpoint which had refused her entry, with the Israeli soldiers standing around laughing and jeering at one less terrorist being born.
Saramago is a member of an eight-person commission sent by the International Writers’ Parliament, to assess the situation. He is accompanied by Nigerian Nobel prizewinner, Wole Soyinka, Christian Salmon, Juan Goytisolo, Bei Dao, Breyten Breytenbach, Vincenzo Consolo and Russel Banks.

Jose Saramago, the first Portugese to
win the Nobel rose from obscurity
RICHARD BOUDREAUX Jose Saramago heard the news in Frankfurt on his way to the airport from the city's book fair. Instead of flying home to Spain's Canary Islands, where he lives, he returned to the fair and addressed an applauding crowd. "It's like being hit on the head, but not hard enough to make you fall down,"Saramago said of the $978,000 Nobel Prize for literature he had just been awarded. "You carry on walking around and wait to come back to your senses."
The 75-year-old author, a slight, modest man who looks more like an elderly clerk than a literary giant, added that "the prize is for all speakers of Portuguese". "But while we're on the subject, if you don't mind, I shall keep the money."
Saramago is the first writer in Portuguese, the language of 140 million people around the world, to win the prize. His 19 novels, four plays and three volumes of poetry form an iconoclastic body of literature that champions the common man and challenges conventional views on religion and the goal of a united Europe.
Saramago, whose entrancing tales and playful scepticism about history and reality make him one of Europe's most original contemporary writers, is also the fourth consecutive European to win the prize established in 1901.
