Schally, Andrew Victor
(b. Nov. 30, 1926, Wilno, Pol.), Polish-born U.S. endocrinologist whose work in isolating and synthesizing hormones that are produced by the hypothalamus and control the activities of other hormone-producing glands led to his being awarded a share (with Roger Guillemin and Rosalyn Yalow ) of the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine Schally fled Poland with his family in 1939. He attended the University of London and worked for three years at the National Institute for Medical Research in London before travelling to Montreal to enter McGill University. He graduated in 1955 and two years later took a Ph.D. in biochemistry. From 1957 to 1962 he was associated with Baylor University in Houston, Texas, and in the latter year he became chief of endocrine and polypeptide laboratories at the Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in New Orleans. At the same time he joined the medical faculty of the Tulane University School of Medicine, becoming professor in 1967. He became senior medical investigator with the VA in 1973. Schally became a U.S. citizen in 1962. Among Schally's chief accomplishments were the synthesis of TRH (thyrotropin-releasing hormone), the isolation and synthesis of LH-RH (luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone), and studies of the action of somatostatin.

Rosalyn S. Yalow in her lab, 1977 UPI/Corbis-Bettmann in full ROSALYN SUSSMAN YALOW (b. July 19, 1921, New York, N.Y., U.S.), American medical physicist, joint recipient (with Andrew V. Schally and Roger Guillemin ) of the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for her development of the technique of radioimmunoassay (RIA). Yalow graduated from Hunter College in New York City in 1941 and four years later received her Ph.D. in physics from the University of Illinois. From 1946 to 1950 she lectured on physics at Hunter. In 1947 she became a consultant in nuclear physics to the Bronx Veterans Administration Hospital, where from 1950 to 1970 she was physicist and assistant chief of the radioisotope service. With a colleague, Solomon A. Berson, Yalow began investigating various medical applications of radioactive isotopes. By combining techniques from radioisotope tracing and immunology, she developed RIA, which proved to be a very sensitive and simple means for measuring minute concentrations of biological and pharmacological substances in blood or other fluid samples. RIA was first applied by Yalow and Berson in 1959 in studying insulin concentration in the blood of diabetics, but the method soon found hundreds of other applications. In 1976 Yalow became the first woman to be awarded the Albert Lasker Prize for basic medical research. From 1973 she was director of the Solomon A. Berson Research Laboratory.

Interviste

Press Release: The 1977 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
KAROLINSKA INSTITUTET
October 1977
The Karolinska Institute
has decided that the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1977 should be divided, one half being awarded jointly to
Roger Guillemin and Andrew Schally
for their discoveries concerning "the peptide hormone production of the brain" and the other half to
Rosalyn Yalow
for "the development of radioimmunoassays of peptid hormones".
This year's Nobel Laureates in Physiology or Medicine have made their discoveries within the field of peptide hormones (peptides being substances built up by chains of amino acids). Many hormones in the body belong to this group and are produced by the hypophysis, the thyroid gland, the parathyroid glands, the placenta, the gastro-intestinal tract and other tissues. New such hormones are still being discovered.
While chemical methods for quantitative analysis of other hormones in blood and urine were in common use in the middle 1950's, such specific analytical procedures were not available for peptide hormones. The main, but not the only reason for this was their occurrence in blood in extremely low concentrations. For example, the molar concentration of pituitary ACTH under basal conditions is 1 x 10

Using a laboratory-developed analog of somatostatin, a hypothalamic hormone which inhibits the release of growth hormone, scientists were able to target specific receptors on tumor sites and reverse cancer growth. They report their findings in the June 1 issue of Cancer Research "This analog is super potent. The targeted chemotherapy inhibited the tumors beautifully," said Andrew V. Schally, Ph.D., M.D.H.C., distinguished medical research scientist at the New Orleans VA Medical Center and leader of the research group. Dr. Schally, also a professor of medicine at Tulane University, received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1977. Schally likens AN-238 to Paul Ehrlich’s "magic bullet." Ehrlich, recipient of the 1908 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, said "we must learn to fight microbes with magic bullets." Ehrlich himself discovered the magic bullet, salvarsan, that was long used to treat syphilis. Schally said scientists tell him "the world has been waiting one hundred years for this compound." For additional information on these findings, please contact Dr. Andrew Schally, (504) 589-5230.

Earl W. SUTHERLAND, Jr. - describes the mechanisms by which hormones act. Gerald M. EDELMAN and Rodney R. PORTER - discover the chemical structure of antibodies. Karl von FRISCH, Konrad LORENZ and Nikolaas TINGBERGEN - show the organisation of social behaviour patterns in animals. Albert CLAUDE, Christian de DUVE and George E. Lasker Awards and the Nobel
The Lasker Medical Science Awards in basic research, clinical research, special achievement and public service, which have been bestowed since l945, provide a chronicle of the progress of biomedical research over the last half-century. The Lasker Foundation is proud that many of the amazing discoveries and achievements of Lasker Award winners are recognized, in addition, by the prestigious Nobel Prize. As of 2002, sixty-six Lasker winners have gone on to win the Nobel. The following statistics are of interest:
  • 47.5% of the Basic Lasker Winners go on to win the Nobel
